Darkfall costs 50-75 bucks US.... OP is putting far too much effort into making a decision, just buy the damn game and find out already. You'd swear people were buying an engagement ring or something.
$50 US
But, if you add in the fact that I buy single player games, have 2 MMO subs, my wife has a WoW sub, I bought a $70 controller last month, I had to buy my wife a new $70 headset for WoW, and a whole lot more than I want to and care to admit spent on gaming....... it adds up. Kinda gotta be picky in some places more than others, especially when a game doesn't have a free trial and it's a toss up if I'll like the game or not.
I'm not the OP, but still, people have different situations. In the last 2 months, I think $600 has went to gaming and I don't even have a console and haven't bought any more serious computer parts. I have alot of habits, I try to keep Gaming as one of my cheaper habits. :-D
The Kraken got me though. It shows alot of initiative from the developers. I'm getting DF on the last day of finals next week and I'm stoked. Maybe they can push out another uber patch before then :-D
Reading through this thread, I ended up on the Darkfall site, entering in registration info. Then it occurred to me to check out the DF forums for a minute to check into how things have gone since this new expansion they just did. I closed the tab for buying the game....
Obviously when a game implements massive game changes as it seems they recently have, there will be a transition period of people adjusting to the new and letting go of the old. That said, it seems as though they may have overdone some things? Lots of QQ on the forums about the mage changes, PVE changes, etc..
All in all, I just don't want to come into the game having read this thread and getting hyped up a bit, only to find a different game than has been described here. Are the PVE changes of a big concern to a new player? Is balance that blatantly out of whack? Would I do myself best to give it another week (I'm patient enough) or just jump on in?
Oh, and how are you so sure that this $87 offer of the game + 6 months ends tonight, Gprestige? I didn't immediately see any indications of a deadline when looking at the offer, but I didn't look much further than that.

Google it, it should take you to their thread about it. It ends tonight. Also, the main people complaining about mage nerfs are the ones who most likely hacked and/or were grinding nonstop to cap their mage skills. This patch was more for new players when it comes to those changes. Read a bit further online. Honestly, its worth it because you know when there is a HUGE outcry about something it probably gets reverted anyways.
Also, specific mmo forums are a TERRIBLE place to go. According to every MMO's official forums, their game is dying (yes, even wow)
During the character transfer period and until December 5th 2009 there will be a special offer on Darkfall's 6 month subscription packages for both the EU1 and the NA1 servers where you save 30 percent off the normal price:
NA1 Server
* New Accounts: Darkfall Client + 6 months of Darkfall= $87 (you save $38)
Forums are all ablaze right now but that is par for the course when a xpack or major patch happens, name me a game where things do not go like this.
You have people praising changes, some people who are meh and others who hate them.
Right now the hot topics are nerf to magic and pve mobs being made to powerful, I do not know much about either since I am a newb but I will say this...
A MMO will NEVER achieve perfect balance or a semblance of it. The sooner people realize this the happier they will be. Not to say balance should be forgotten, far from it. As a game developer they must always be on that quest to achieve it and by doing so will often shake things up, things that in turn can upset some players and make some happy.
People who did not use magic before seem happy that melee is stronger. Mages are upset because they are not nearly as poweful. All of this coming the day the patch even came out...
I can not say much, perhaps they did go overboard I dunno. I do see a lot of people comparing mages to melee/archers and got me wondering my mages should be allowed to rely on just magic but to rely solely on melee is a no go? That seems unfair and yet it seems mages feel this should be the case?
I also feel like mages ignore their utility, aoe and splash damage all from range and are only focused on big numbers. Again I am not one to say much though.
As for PvE, no idea. Goblins are harder it feels like but not by much. Goblin Shaman though are the nuts!! A bit much haha.
In the end you gotta be smart enough to know what to ignore and your use your own sense. People who go insane and rage quit over stuff that JUST CAME OUT, are acting like spoiled children and as if this is news to them when a patch/xpack launches.
Right now people just to need to play, have fun, try stuff out and let the dust settle it is then when things will be clear and AV can begin to tweak things.
TDLR ---> Do not let forum rage be what makes you not buy the game. As a new player most all of it will not even effect you and by the time it could, I am positive many changes will have taken place. Also for all the people hating some of the changes, many enjoy it. Take it with a grain of salt, enjoy the game as a newb and let the dust settle.

Ty much for the info on the cost. Thinking about it for a bit, I'm likely best off to just go ahead and bite the bullet now, for that price, than wait regardless. I'm just still quite skeptical about the game in general, and really despise wasting money (which is easy to do when buying a product you're unsure of or haven't tried).
Ah well, I'll probably just go ahead and get it done. I just tossed away $75 on Aion CE + 1 month, and as I think about it, 2 months of pretty decent entertainment there was worth the cost (shame that game didn't pan out better). My main concern was a loss of appeal from the recent changes but I suppose you're right - major outcry will lead to a possible revert, and I might just like the new as it is. Guess I'll be finding out...

Trust me, I was just as hesitant as you are when I made this thread (just earlier today). I was thinking, "hell, I'm going to buy it one day guaranteed" and then I found out the deal ends today, so I was sold. $80CAD after tax for 6 months of fun? You're an idiot to pass it up unless you utterly hate the game.
While magic may be broken now, they will NOT keep it that way. How could they? No game company is that stupid, and they seem to be well connected with the community.

Yeah honestly, the price is its selling point to me atm. That, and this game seems like a love or hate kind of thing. I feel like I just put my $87 to a coin toss, but I'm definitely hoping I end up on the love it side. If I find I really enjoy the game.. best deal on an MMO ever (I've paid more in 'F2P' MMOs than $90 and for less game time).
Thrilled at the download speed, btw. I was expecting some sluggish, slow ass download and atm I'm getting almost my max advertised speed for my connection. At this rate I can go take a nap and it'll be done... probably best I just get some sleep however. On that note...
