Should I try SWG?

BeermanglerBeermangler Member UncommonPosts: 402

A foreword about me and my gameplay:

I am a somewhat casual player, I prefer having a job and a wife rather than a uber-epic-maxed-level toon in a MMO. I spend about 2-3 hours per day, but not everyday, depending on how late I work . I prefer PVE, I like soloing - but not because I hate grouping, rather because I hate disappointing people  that invite me because I have to suddenly log-off when something comes up in RL.

I am a somewhat veteran MMO player, been playing WoW from the early beginnings - and have been kicking myself in the nuts ever since because I failed to do a bit of research and thus failed to find out about SWG - I am a huge SW fan since I was like.. five or six years old and watched the movies on smuggled VHS tapes (I live in an ex-commie country).

Anyways... I have been hearing A LOT about this CU that screwed the game, and also about positive changes in the game in the meanwhile. I don't mind playing a post-CU SWG since I don't have a frame of reference. With all these servers closing down, is there any point in subbing? Again, I don't see MMOs as a long-time investment, if SWG shuts down i'll be just 'meh' and move on.

I'm just looking for a WoW substitute that has meaningful gameplay, story, maybe crafting, lots of exploring and basically offers a fun environment.

Thanks in advance!

Seems like the perfect game for you. Nobody groups up on the game anyway. I've never played the pre-CU game so i dont know what everyone is crying about.

I've recently cancelled my sub because i got bored of the solo-centric gameplay, then i heard they closed down like half of the servers, so that doesn't sound like it's going well.

Why are there so many cutesie, fantasy, childish MMO's. Give me blood, gore and a long lasting challenge. I don't need my hand being held along the way. Thanks.

Just seen their offer on Steam, purchased and downloading now. Somehow they made top of the list on Top Sellers MMOs section. Hopefully more people will (re)join.

Hey there is a 14 day trial, u could try it out a few days then get it through steam, that is good till thursday.

I"m doing the trial right now, honestly, lotro is it for me, but swg is a nice "break" I like star wars and the time line too, the old republic is cool, but no vader and luke  and han.. etc..

I could dispense 9.99$ for all included, even 30 days of gameplay (checked my 'station' account). I have a stale week ahead of me so why not give SWG a shot.

You may hear from some vets who will rant about how screwed the game is compared to what it was.  I am a pre-CU vet, too, and sympathize with this viewpoint, but ultimately, what do you care?  You can never play the game as it once was.  Judge the game as it is today on it's own merits.

    Good luck

(But as WoW substitutes go, have you looked at Fallen Earth?)

Yeep, I have tried FE, since Close Beta. But the game freezes up on me quite often, due to some issues with my video card type (8600GT) which they didn't solve yet (as far as I know).

I love the game, I have a pre-ordered edition, but I'm waiting for another 2-3 months worth of updates so the it becomes more stable and less clunky as regards to melee combat.

You should try it.  Judge it for yourself.

Get past Tansaari Point station, though (the n00bie island of SWG) and see the real game you'll be playing in long term.  You can level up to 10 on Tansaari Point station, then ask Han Solo for a ride, he'll dump you off in front of the Mos Eisley starport and you'll be able to explore the real game world on foot, with some quest provided ground transport, and with the single seat spacehip you should have picked up at the station.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

    2.30 am.

This is how late I stayed playing SWG last night - starting from about 7pm. I guess being a fan of the SW universe helped ignoring the glitches in the game.

The most frustrating thing to learn was the combat system. I found myself shooting at the wrong target in a crowded area then fumbling with TAB and middle mouse button and what not, trying not to piss off anyone else in the area while running in circles wearing my pink overalls.

Other than that - the starting area provides enough quests and tasks to get a n00b like me familiarized with combat, navigation, quest flow and even space flight / combat.

I was a bit lost when I reached Mois Eisley, and somehow I managed to f*ck up my quest line that Han Solo initiated - I was supposed to work my way into Jabba's ranks but after a delivery quest (meeting with some guys in Anchorhead) my quest log was empty. Tried contacting Bib but he snubbed me and never contacted me again about the job or Jabba being pissed on me.

So I reached Anchorhead and started doing the kill-those-banthas quest.  At which point I recalled I had an 8am meeting at work and bailed out :). Still not sure I want to join the Rebels or the Empire, I'm trying to stay neutral for the time being. They both warned me I'll get my ass kicked by the other faction in case I make up my mind. Plus, as a Bounty Hunter, I thing staying neutral is for the best in the long run. But.. is it possible to remain neutral throughout the game?

This, in a (rather big) nutshell, was my first impression on SWG. I'm quite anctious to get home and be graveled by the banthas - they're a bit higher level than me :)

    Regards,

    /R.

You can remain neutral if you want, but you will miss out on the PvP content (outside of actually player bounty hunting) that requires you to be Imperial or rebel. In fact, the next big game update is supposed to be focused on the Galactic Civil War (GCW), so in order to take part in it, you will have to choose a faction.

You may have to go to Jabbas palace now near Wayfar tatooine to start that questline. In your journal look under legacy and see what quest you have.

This is incorrect.  A new "Faction Helper" system is in testing right now.

    • While considering various possible systems for Neutral/Civilian to participate in the upcoming GCW game update, we are testing this early version of the "factional helper" system.
    • The system is available on TCPrime and TestCenter for research/preliminary testing, and to get player feedback.
    • The faction helper system is just one of the various systems under consideration.
    • Use the /factionalHelper command to choose how you want to help (or stop helping) your favorite faction.
    • "Factional help" is currently limited to ground PvE and PvP combat only. All other systems will still continue to treat you as Neutral/Civilian.

With this system, Beermangler could stay as a Neutral Bounty Hunter and "Faction Help" in PvP whichever faction seems most appropriate.

The faction path you choose on the Legacy quest doesn't actually align you with any faction, so feel free to chose whichever path you fancy.

I considered resub to SWG about 8 months ago, while I was under the influence of SARS or something. They added some CC security feature only 5% of the CCs implemented so none of my cards worked. Screw em.

a feature that is 7 years too late... will be poorly implemented and not fully tested.. and definately exploited to the max

As to how SWG made it to the top Steam seller list.. very simple.  They added the Greivous bike to the package knowing full well anyone that will shell out 2.99 at a booster pack will definately throw $10 for a vehicle added to their account.  i know people that made several steam accounts just so they could have one on all their accounts.

sad part is.. the vehicle is crap

SWG has a ton of content and is a very underrated game.

The game has improved greatly since when they messed things up with how they introduced "NGE".

It is essentually 2 MMO's Space and ground. The 2 sides play totally different.

Crafting is better in SWG then ANY other MMO. Not all items come out the same. You can make a better gun of same type then your neighbor. Crafting and non-combat professions in general are huge importance in SWG.

SWG is not as directed as WoW. It does have quests, but life is much more open to do what you want. You don't NEED to do any specific thing. SWG is a sanbox MMO with added themeparks.

Open world housing you can decorate any way you wish. It's fun just to see some peoples creations. Player run cities takes it another step. Design your own town!

It's not perfect, but in many ways, it now is BETTER then pre cu days.

Every class can be effective. Expertise allows people to mimmick many templet mixes of old.

Be aware of 1 thing though, the default control settings are yuk. Use "Auto-target" settings, and in keymap where it says "style" choose "Star Wars Galaxies".

Then cycle target in/out in keymap.

Once you do that, controls are MUCH smoother.

Nothing to loose when it's free to try.

I totally disagree. I am grouped with my guildies all the time. Every time I play I am grouped with them at some point. There is a ton of group content. Tons of reasons you need other players also. Crafting for 1. You need multiple crafter types to make the best items complete.

I'm sorry you experienced SWG without a good Guild, but try it again and look for a good Guild. You would be supprised how much better the games group activities are.

When it comes to SWG, somewhere between the most glowing review and the most horrible one there is the truth of the game and how it is.   It really is something you simply have to try for yourself to make up your mind rather than trusting peoples opinions here or on the official boards for the game.   I wouldn't just say that for SWG either but for all games.  We are all different and look for different things.  As I said in my first post on these particular boards - I'm hard pressed to find a game that offers me as much as that one does.  But I also know that to others it offers them nothing (World of Warcraft is that for me).

So, to sum it all up, one thing we can ALL agree on, is that you should try SWG.

and why would he help either faction? ie: how does it affect him in terms of the GCW?

The "Faction Helper" system they're adding is being done completely wrong (IMO). A 3rd faction is a great idea...but that's not what they're doing...they're simply removing the faction swapping wait. The ability to swap factions at a moments notice (30min) will only ensure there are less Rebels and less Imperial PvPers. I don't even know where to begin with the problems this system will cause...If Neutrals were so anxious to PvP before now, they'd have already chosen a faction...all this does is weaken what was left. Maybe they should include a "Choose side" option upon cloning?! UGH!!!

Hardcore PvPers will obviously be inclined to go "neutral". To them, PvP is gameplay. Swapping back and forth for PvP will be worth the price of losing all "GCW" buffs...unfortunately...that means that both factions will lose most of their "leaders" (silent or vocal). Like it or not, the hardcore PvPers were what made or broke PvP. WHO they could muster to come out often determined how good PvP was. When everyone else wanted to give up, they didn't.

Less buff house access. Most of the PvP guilds provided the buff houses, the Medics, the Officers, the Ent alts. Do you still think your Jedi RP guild that PvP'd once a week will have access when they might be fighting you in 5min? Nope. We buff our friends and our allies, not our enemies. Nothing personal, it's just the way it is.

A true 3rd faction was needed...not this crap.

With all the existing systems already in-game to measure your standing with everything from Jawas to Gorax, this was undoubtedly the laziest and worst possible way to do what they should have done years ago.
