This got me curious (+ shocked)...
I watched a documentary about the Maya civilization (Meso-American). The historians believed that their calculations (using the classical Geometry and Astronomy) about creation of the Mayas are only late by 33 seconds (?). I got shocked when I heard that they calculated the end of the world. (What?) The date: Sunday, December 23, 2012... soo...what does anyone else think, my wife is stuck on it she has mentioned it to me before and now she wont shutup about it. do you think the mayans predictions could be correct, because they have been right before...and they had documentation of technology that never existed in thier time such as helicopters. i sure hope not.

meh, there are many possibilities...
it could be as simple as they got bored of writing so much,
or it could be something real like they spent generations calculating this stuff.

Yea, but I think last month they released something saying they were wrong...
Well... I suppose it is possible, but then so many people have made predictions throughout history, and the time has come and gone. I.E. 2000 But either way, people are going to make it a huge hype, and go and try and buy all the supplies from stores and hide in their basement. So the answer is... the government. It is a plot of the government to try and fix the economy. It is 2 days before christmas. Noone is going to buy christmas presents because they will figure, "Hey what is the point?" But then the time will come and go, and everyone will rush out to buy christmas gifts. See it fits. I think that is more plausible than the Mayans magically predicted the end of everything, while we cant with all our technology. Also the "helicopter" you are refering to is a gold sculpture or something isnt it? I thought they said that was a fake or something...

Well, NASA has a ship heading to hit an asteroid (Deep impact?) dont quite remember the name, and they GUARANTEE it wont be knocked in to earth's orbit, so, as we have official word from NASA saying it wont be knocked in to our path, i think were all dead
the year 2000 wasnt supposed to be the end of the world, they thought the computers all were going to quit functioning and make the stock market and all that stuff crash (which obviously was untrue and i was never even worried about that). anyway, im pretty sure the government didnt just forge up some crap about the mayans so they could sell a lot of christmas presents....or cause a mass panic. the "helicopter" that i was speaking of were drawings or paintings on thier walls, among many other things that did not exist in thier time. some people or scientists believe they had the ability to see the future, but we all know the future CAN be changed, so it is just a prediction after all.

I think a lot of people were relying on the Bible date (4000BC-2000AD) and the western gregorian calendar for the world to come to some ending or whatever else to happen, but truth is, I don't think the ancient Hebrew calendar was the Gregorian... I think the Hebrew calendar is still a ways from reaching the year 6000. Even then, who's to say that their calendar is in sync with the original (Biblical) creation of the world?

Just to set everyone straight on the asteroid thing...
A probe is being set to a comet that will smash into the comet burying itself. It will the perform tests and examine the comet. It has nothing to do with the possiblity of the comet hitting earth, it is for scientific research. As for the Mayans calculations, big deal. The Great Pyramid had a time table that ended roughly May 5, 2000. Did the world end? As for technology not invented yet, think of it this way. Leonardo Da Vinci drew a portrait resembling a helicopter. Does that mean he predicted it before it was invented? Of course not, he had an idea and drew it. It was just used as a basis of an idea when the helicopter was built.
The difference is that the Great Pyramid time table just ended I don't think they actually said anything about the world ending.
Yeah I knew it was just for research but it could be the government secretly trying it out.If they came out and said everyone would freak.But, maybe the aliens would save us

Actually, neither does the Mayan Calender. It says time will end, not the world.

Our civilization is lucky to be even alive today. Think about all the factors against us. A meteor hitting us at any moment. The earth will eventrually cool down until the core is dead like mars ( so we will freeze ) Our resources could be depleted, A desease could wipe us out. The sun will blow up in a few billlion years. The magnetic feild of the earth will become weaker and allow deadly radiation to poor in. We could kill off ourself with a nuclear winter.
All of this could happen but will it happen in our life time? probably 99.9% no. It might take a few million years for one of these to happen. Yes the sun will blow up eventrually, and yes the earth will stop rotating and cool down eventrually. But there is nothing we can do so there is no point in worring. You can look any of these up if you do not beleive me.
My point is that we are lucky to be even alive we have only been alive for 1 % of the earths totally life. the earth is 4.6ish billion years old and humans have been around for acouple million. If we were alive from the start we would have been dead a long time ago by catastrafic events. The earth has been hit by coutless rocks from space and bursts of radiation that would have killed anything. Who knows how long we last, but i am sure we will survive somehow.
don't read to much into it mate, every Civilisation from to Greeks to the Maya's made predictions (including us). But if your interested in that stuff read some of the prediction's made by the farther of prophecies Nostradamus, this bloke predicted the hour of his death, WW1 and 2 and the rise of America.
And about that helicopter thing alot of civilisations documention and designs of what look like planes or helicopters jeez Leonardo Da Vinci almost designed a working model of a helicopter and this was back in 1486.
so like i said don't read to much into any of this stuff, and certainly don't be worried by it!

Saw a documentary on A&E
I went through the whole "end of the world" phase like 10 years ago. I saw all this crap on TV (A&E, Discovery Channel, etc. Highly acclaimed programs) about the apocalypse in the bible, or from Nostradamus, or from the egyptians, etc. Now, 10 years later, all of those dates have passed and proven the theories wrong.
What seems to be more devastating is the obviously false tragedies that turn into real tragedies. Like Y2K with everyone buying stuff, selling stuff, building stuff, wasting months preparing for this new worldwide holocaust. Or like "The War of the Worlds," where hundreds of people across the country committed suicide because they thought a sci-fi entertainment program on the radio was real.
Don't plan for the end of the world; if it comes, let it come. It's not like building a bomb shelter or hording food will keep you alive more than a few months after everyone else is dead.
