Eve Online is great sci-fi, if a little dull. Face of Mankind looks a little naff IMO, MxO isnt my idea of sci-fi...

vendetta is incomplete, jumpgate is seeminly dead/dying, earth & beyond didnt appeal to me (and died, leaving thousands of anoying fanbois ::::35::)

Eschaton: Chain of Command looks great but isnt really anywhere near completion yet...its a pretty depressing time for sci-fi fans....

    ---sig---

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

Out of those 2, I would say Matrix Online. Face of Mankind didn't look interesting, but hey, thats just to me.

Jumpgate is not dead. Eventhough the online numbers are extremely low due to the lack of marketing and advertusing. The developers are taking their time improving the gameplay and graphics. Theres still a tight knit community as well.

Vendetta on the other hand, the flight engine and the combat system defenitly did not appeal to me. This game is worth looking at along with having it availible to all platforms.

Earth and Beyond.. I did not even bother to take a look at because it did not have a PvP combat system what so ever.

uuuh everybody knows about anarchy online being free for a while.. why bother posting it?

What has Matrix Online to do with Sci-Fi I do not know. Face of Mankind looks interesting from concepts perspective, and from current games, I'd go for Eve Online. IMHO of course...

Go for Face of Mankind its totally sweet, everything is player run, great PvP, roleplaying is easy and you can really make a difference to the game you play. Another reason is the open beta for face of mankind is DAYS away so you can play for free to see if you like the concept and help balance and fix it ready for retail. I have played Sci-fi games from Neocron to eve-online and compared this one looks to top them all.

Check out the website - www.fomportal.com - and ready the FAQ for more info.

    Hope to see you there.

I wonder if theres any existing mmo where you can walk around places like in anarchy online, and have the ability to fly space ships with a joystick..

Oooh I didn't think of that one.

Anarchy-Online: I have played AO more than 2 years. Game is more like fantasy-scifi (there is lot's of "magical" things). Loot and camping are also important ingame. Crafting is less important. There is housing, but currently it's pretty bad (not much furnitures and customizing). Customer support is good and you can play classical game for free. Game engine (graphics etc) is starting to be outdated. World is great, intresting and hand made.

EvE-Online: Nice space economy simulation. Graphics are really great and almost all items are crafted by players (however loot seems to come also more and more important). Group playing game. EvE doesn't have housing and you really can't walk in stations or planets (you don't have character presentation other than small picture).

Star Wars Galaxies: Great graphics. Crafting is very important Loot is poor - but there is also some great loot only items. Biggest problem is that there isn't much to do for players who want to explore and kill something (altough most of players are trying to achieve Jedi status which will give lot's of work). Planets are generally pooring "computer" generated land. Great housing and with JTL it is fun to fly in space.

If you want to explore and kill things, try Anarchy-Online. If you want to group with other players and fight from economical power, try EvE-Online. If you want to roleplay and craft, try Star Wars Galaxies. All games have at least free trial.

Your kidding right? The Matrix concept doesn't make it into your definition of SCIENCE fiction? Why?

The Matrix? No sci fi? You are crazy! It pays in the future , it has an alternate view of reality , has a lot to do with science and computers etc...

  • lotharrlotharr Member Posts: 981

Yes matrix online has lots of sci-fi elements...

The Matrix means in programming the flexibility of something, and matrix happens in computer world where the guys are doing very hmmm... strange tricks

The ship in Matrix moves in the dungeons of a dead city...

And it tells about 200 years from now, dunno...

Matrix is a Scienc Fiction cult! image

MMMmmM, don't know about the best. I am not gonna slam AO but your comment about guns? Ya, you can shoot at them with guns while a they whack at you with swords point blank. Thats not a very good system to me consider the sword guy has an equal chance of winning! Uber graphics? Nu uh, the graphics were par for the time they were released, thats about all.

Regardless, its a good game. I have played it at several different times and I still check back on it every now and then to see how its going. One of the reasons I left the game though was because I couldnt deal with looking at my screen, the scenery was so ugly. There is only so much yellow grass I can take before I need to see a patch of green (which I hear is changing now finally).

Considering its free now its definatly worth a look though to see if you like it for yourself. There are many people like TempEcho that absolutely love it, and that does say alot.

If anyone's interested , im a Level 53 Adventurer at Atlantean. And for Fadeus : there is very little "yellow grass anymore". Try checking out Athen (a clan city) , it has a large green scenery , with lots of trees and caves. Foreman's Office looks real good , too.

I don't play currently but yes, I heard and saw some screenshots of the texture redo's. Question though, why is Funcom being so tight lipped about it? You can barely find any literature on it, and the one page I did find on it was very vague as to what was going to happen with the update to the graphics engine.

Eve is an interactive screen saver. I bought SWG and JTL but never did bother playing it. A lot of my friends got bored of it within a few weeks. I'm not in any position to judge the game, having never played it but from the sound of it, the entertainment value doesn't last too long.

Jumpgate, while currently low on players is a great game even though it's been around for so long. It gets regular updates (generally one per month which isn't bad for only one programmer) and an evolving story. The community is great. It has it's flaws but it's a lot of fun to play. Also, you can probably expect to see NetDevil put more resources into it after the release of their next game Auto Assault. I can't say that is 100% sure, but they are really dedicated to Jumpgate. Despite the fact that they are likely losing money on it, they still keep the servers up and update it. That's serious dedication, I don't think they'll just drop it and to leave it in it's current state after AA comes out would be pointless.

It's definately worth at least trying. There is a free 10 day trial.
