Back in the days when quake 2 was still fresh and people were playing that hardcore I was growing bored.  I noticed one clan mate vanished and when asked said he was playing this awesome new game called Everquest.  I remember seeing the crappy looking box at electronics boutique and didn't think much of it.  This clan mate kept babbling about gigantic zweihanders and lockjaw and all this stuff which got me interested.

Four years later...   I ended up with a 60th troll shadowknight on bertoxxulous, named Hideo Skullhammer.  Originally, I was Igjarjuk but GM's would change my name.  I switched servers to 7th hammer, the first server transfers to ever happen... only the place was totally empty all the time so I moved back which prompted them to change my name to Hideo.  I helped start the guild Omani, not my choice of name I wanted Illuminati.  The guild had this bizarre obsession with badgers.

Although I regret spending as much time as I did playing that damn game I miss the friendships I had and the people I met.  It took forever to level to 50 in that game before any expansions.   I look back and laugh at the old rivalries that existed.  Anyways I'd be interesting to see if anyone else misses those old days of EQ.

Besides although I had alot of fun I don't plan on returning to EQ anytime soon.   If they use the classic client.

Racial and class exp penalties.  Having to corpse run.  Exp loss and losing levels upon death.  Hell levels and losing an entire bubble of exp per death in the level following a hell level which could be an entire day of grinding lost.

Me and my wife played from early 2000-2003 and moved on to EQ2, WOW, and Vanguard and then WAR. Just last week we went back to the original EQ and are having a blast. It's different and even empty in some zones but we are enjoying seeing old friends and enemy NPCs. I made the run thru Firona Vie to get to Lake of Ill Omen the other night and still got nervous looking for Driders.  I also am enjoying killing mobs of my choice instead of going on a linear quest path. Me and the wife chat and explore and just relax and have a good time. Sometimes you can go back. I just like the old High Fantasy vibe of the original Norrath of EQ1. Hopefully EQIII will return to that same vibe. Maybe give it a try?  If nothing else it is holding my interest better than some of the newer games I've tried lately.

I tried playing again a few years back.  Most of my friends had long since left the game although the guild I helped create was still going strong I didn't really know anyone although they had heard of me.  Just didn't feel the same without the same community.

    Ok so my Everquest experience went like this;

My dad and I went to Gamestop to pick up a copy of one of the new Command & Conquer games back in 1999 right after EQ had released Ruins of Kunark. We got Command and Conquer but while we were there we ask the guy what he recommended as a good game to play that was new. He suggested Everquest. We didnt think the game was great. The employee described it as a open world where we group and fight monster on a back and forth hitting kind of method. THANK GOD my dad decided to give it a shot because it came with a free month.

We we tried out the game, we were amazed. I started a Iksar Shaman named Swoogie and whenever he wasnt playing, I was. We only had one account and one computer. Then for Christmas in 2000 my Dad bought me my own copy. I was so happy. I dont think I have ever been as satisfied with a Christmas gift. ( I got Burning Crusade for Christmas almost 3 years ago, not even close lol). From there, I made a new Iksar Shaman named Swogie. I played until 2005 and then when money got really tight, my dad couldnt pay anymore. From there I was stale on MMOs for a year or so then I went to WoW and then LotRO. I recently moved out (18 yrs old now) and I plan on heading back to Norrath. I had so much fun back in the day working hard for everything. I wasnt one of those kids who played all day after school.

What i dont understand is why gamers these days find grouping for 3 hours and only getting 1 yellow or 5 blues or 20% of a level a grind. I had fun, enjoyed it and never grouched. I enjoyed the challenge of a Corpse run deep into Chardok . I did use the corpse summoner every so often after the added it.  I cant wait to go back to EQ :):):):):)

I was on Bertoxx as well. My first guild was Clan of The Just, then Twilight Order, Divine, after Devine split up I made Ancient Bonds in an attempt to reform Divine. The last guild I was in was, hmmm, I can't remember the last one. I was however in the EQII Omani Guild. We had a Jesters/Omani type pairing.

Nothing will ever compare to Everquest for me in the world of MMO's,

I was going to return to the game when there was the poll for a new prog. server, but since that did not win I did not return as intended.  I REALLY hope they release a sequel that FEELS like EQ, and I dont mean EQ2.  Everuqtes had the tightest communities / rivalries of any MMO I have played to date.  Remember the concept of blacklisting someone for ninjaing?

That is now a daily, common occurence in many MMO's (the ninjaing and the anonimty of so many characters and name changes makes it impossible to really form any sort of community and have any semblance of  accountability for a players actions).  EQ was about networking, close social ties, and really great lore and gameplay.

WIth the addition of better combat / graphics / PvP / AI systems there are many many things that need to be improved in EQ to make it a viable game again, and I would prefer a fresh start (although with familiar NPC's, regions, lore, and the risk vs reward that the game maintained for so long)   It truly was the most "hardcore" PvE MMO, and not in the sense of mindless repetitive grinding like the numerous cartoony Korean  MMO's on the market.

I still remember the names of the guilds I was in from 1999 to 2005, and many of my friends / enemies char. names and guild association.  That feeling is just not present in games like WoW and all the solo-catering easy MMO's.

I would pay triple the subscription fee that EQ currently has if they were to make a new EQ that invokes the genuine feeling the original did.  Until then, none of the MMOs on the market are satisfying to me and I will continue to wait. Sometimes I will resub just to wander through all the empty zones and I still feel the nostalgia of 10 years ago.  The world of EQ is so large, detailed, and beautifully designed, I don't think any MMO to date has created such a large world.

R.I.P. Everquest, and all who worked on it from Release through PoP who did an excellent job.

LOL when I think of badgers I think of 2 things. The badger that was on the TV show Portal and this www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/badgers .   Badgers are just funny idk why but they are.

I really can't say much about EQ cuz I played at friends houses most of the time, then a month after I bought the game to play with them we all left for FFXI.

I was the jacka$$ that would always train the newbie log in the DE starting forest, name eludes me now, sigh.  Another favorite ja move of mine would be to train a spec or 2 to old school CT entrance, and then train the CT zone in muhahaha

That was it yes!  Thanks.  I played a wizzie so when I ported into the pyramid I'd round up the 4 undead that spawned at the base of it and ran them to some poor noobie hehe.

My Everquest Experience, and all my found memories.

Well I guess i'll start from the begining. I was able to get into EQ durring the beta, played from there on. stopped roughly 4 years ago.

Started as a D-Elf Necro (when they were OP :-D), levels my butt off grinding the log; ahh the log, the ultimate test of courage to a new D-Elf. Maxed out my Necro then started my H-Elf Enchant, GFay is by far one of my favorite starting area's. I remember the days of lagging off Kelethin, accidentally running through the Bandit camp to get to BB, and the random orc trains to the guards.

I remember farming the crap out of Crushbone and all the runs to Kaladim to turn in that quest, just to get encumbered before you made it to the zone line.

Fast forward to Kunark, I remember druid ring farming in WC, and guard farming in Nektulos on my monk. I remember sitting in EC tunnel selling various treasures I found along the way.

I remember farming in BB the two goblin camps, before they nerfed the sell price of the loot they dropped; yes I was one of those people who made thousands upon thousands of plat off that.

My favorite memory was being on Druzzel Ro and being in the first Cazic Thule kill raid. It was a glorious day, grant it between then 10FPS and my lat being in the yellow/red range the entire time, the pixilated death of the god of fear made my day.

I remember staying up all night and going to school in the morning, and counting down the hours till I could get back home and back into the World.

Everquest is one of those games that if you were into it, it made good memories. It's sad to say that I have good memories of a game, but it's the truth, I actually made good friends, who became real life friends and still are after so many years.

To those who still play, and those who played before. Remember Everquest for what it was, a community to enjoy and share moments with others. To learn and grow with the community and complete tasks. To interact through a game and make friends with other across the globe.

Life doesn't revolve around Everquest, just in it.

I started playing EQ about a month after it came out.

My first character was a Barbarian Warrior on Bertox. I remember killing bears to get armor from the vendor newb quest. I also remember those damned Ice Bone skellies that would pop up every 10 minutes or so. I think i lost his corpse when i was exploring and fell into black burrow. (don't laugh my pc/video card didn't have gamma correction at that time so it was just pitch black)

Then i started a Barbarian Shaman. Played him to level 40 or so and decided that class wasn't for me. Too many beggers (GIMME SOW BIATCH!)

I took a break for a few months after that and came back on Tribunal where i rolled a Wizard. That was the class i was looking for. It fit like a glove. I did just about everything you'd expect an EQ player to do from that time on. While there were many things i enjoyed about the game i think the best time i had was doing Planes of Power progression with the Aussie guild i was in (Aurora Noctum). Good times. I would rather they never put in zones like Nexus and PoK though.

I started playing in 99 or 98, im not sure when it was. I do remember the world wide emotes going off as some level 50 paladin was doing the paly weapon quest (the pre kunark first ever epic weapon)  And the Gm's were doing all kinds of world wide emotes when he finaly got it because he was the first person on any server to get it. That was one thing i loved about EQ the gms really cared, loved the game and had fun.

When i did the last step of the ragebringer quest it was the first epic weapon on any server and the gms's were emoting the zone, changing the sky different colors and showed up to the final event as characters from earlier parts of the quest, Ive never seen anything even close to that in any other game ive played since.

It may be because eq was my first mmo but no game has ever held me like eq did, which i think is a good thing since i was totaly addicted to eq.

    Best memoreis from Eq:

I heard about an "UBER" dagger that dropped in crush bone and spent three days trying to get there from qeynos, i think i lost 3 levels just in kithakor forest, but i still have fond memories of it lol.

Spending hours lfg in lower guk cause nobody wanted rogues in the pre ragebringer days. and hours and hours at the frenzy camp trying to get that damn fbss!

Doing the whole ragebringer quest line was awsome.

Wining the rogue botb for my server at lvl 56 and then not being allowed to use ragebringer in the finals on test.

Doing cr's in hate and in vox's lair. (the only reason anyone brought a rogue with them in the old days.)

LOL most of my fondest memories of eq would be considered a pain in the ass in games these days, but looking back on it i loved it and had a blast while doing it, probably because of the community and the way everyone talked to eachother and needed eachother to do anything (unless you were a druid)

Oh and i played a barb rogue ( most people even my own guildies thought i was a de cause i always had the mask on) on tunare called Malloci

Sigh, yeah was just thinking about the good old days...camping sand giants for the sow boots to sell, HGs for the money drops, "WTB Bind/Port please", "Sow please", "Will pay for rez", trains in Karnors, camping Velks for 3 months at a go to lvl, 3 years to finally get my Rng epics (1.0), running through WK took forever, got lucky with a 3 day wait for Stormfeather, naggy raids, etc.

Yes, it wasn't always great, the lvl grind was nightmarish as was the death penalty but then I played when it was actually possible to be ks'ed for xp, and xp loss started at lvl1. By the time we got to SoL everything wasn't that bad anymore, except for the launch of SoL itself. Now that was a Cluster F**k if ever I saw one.

Made some good friends who are still friends with me in RL to this day even though we may literally live oceans apart. Yes, I do miss EQ but just don't have the time or dedication to spend on it any more. Just can't spend 6-8 hours on massive raids. Plus of course, soe still has their grubby paws on the game and that's enough of a deterrent for me.

No matter what anyone else may say, for me at least, EQ is and always will be, The mmorpg for me. Nothing else comes close.

hah, reading all these brings back so many great memories. Guess i will share a few as well.

First thing i remember was making a barbarian warrior and getting lost in the tunnel that went from hallas to the fighting area. lmao, took me probally a solid 5-10min to get through that damn tunnel. When i got a torch to put in hand i was so EXCITED! I think i was happeir then, then getting epics in WoW ! :-p.

Just the sound of the ding when i leveled was so exciting. Made me feel that i had realy accomplished something. Traveling for an hour or so just to get to a new place that i had heard for exp or loot. Paying for buffs and ports. Begging in North Freeport for money so i could buy my first full suit of bronze armor. Leveling a cleric and not realizing it was worth it to buy my spells that buffed others lmao....i just bought heals and damage spells up to about lvl 24. Didnt see the importance of a few hp/ac...lol. Good ole days of bein a noob.

I remember me and a friend read in a book we bought online of "EQ secrets". One of the best things we learned (back around 99, 2000, was camping in OoT. There was a ghoul i belive that you could kill and get a 2h peircer/ polearm or something liek that. Was a great item for paladins at the time if i remember correctly. We would take turns farming it and taking the boat back to NFP and sell it for a few hundred plat. We did that for weeks lmao. (till it got nerfed).

Camping the AC (ancient cyclops) for my Jboots. Spent an entire weekend doing that.

Learning how to 6 box near the end of my previous EQ career. Me and 2 other friends all 6 boxedand would clear VT , just us 3. Farming AAs solo with 6 toons. That was such a blast.

And everything else that everyone else hasposted. Gawd....EQ was the best mmo....i think it still is. There was more then just tank, healer, dps. There were classes that enhanced others with songs, buffs to each stat, haste, regen (hp and mana), illusion changing, debuffing mobs, slowing mobs, snaring them etc..... So much more to fights and grouping. Not just anyone could fill a role.

    "B"
Games played- eq, eq2, ao, L2, eve, swg, dndo, war, wow, coh, cov, ac, ac2, mo, (just about all of em)

You make a great point at the end. I have wondered this myself (buffs). In WoW (and lotro)most buffs are very short and temporary and thus not really useful for a use for solo players. BUT I currently play EQ and I run to the guild lobby and AFK for like 30mins or so and get all buffed up from MGBs and then take off to kill. Without these buffs the game is soooo much harder and it is a necessity to be supported by other classes.

Yes ! Jboots ! I was trying so hard to remember the name but just couldn't. Did you know that 3-4 months into the game - when I could actually survive the run from Qeynos to South Karana - guess who killed me within 2 minutes of crossing the bridge heh heh , it was the Ancient Cyclops. To this day, no one believes me when I tell them that the AC pops there. I should have taken a damn screen shot.

    A few more memories :

    1.   The Spell Book - blocking everything when you were sitting down recovering mana.

    2.   That zone off West Commons (?) where the mobs went from like lvl10 during the day to lvl50 during the night (can't remember the name); Pure terror trying to do my rng epic lol.

    3.   Farming Wakizashi's of the Frozen Skies in Stonebrunt ; I think I must have made at least a million plat off these things in my time on EQ.

    4.   The boat ride from Qeynos to Erudin ; You could read 'War and Peace' just waiting for the ride to finish lol.

    5.   Lodizal :D

    6.   The Sewers in Qeynos - "Hey I didn't know there were rooms down here. Wonder where this goes ? - Screen Loading. Please Wait."

    7.   Black Burrow; And working on swimming while camping the gnolls.

    8.   My first silver earned from...fishing lol.

Sigh, I do miss EQ sometimes. Seriously, I have not had such fun in a game in a long time.

OMG I remember camping him with various groups for the length of my summer vacation. I could have leveled past the need for the items he dropped (boots and the damn amazing Lodizal Shell Shield) but instead i focused on killing him for the stuff. Lost lots of rolls for the stuff but i kept on trying. Eventually I got the items and it was soooo worth it.

Yeah, but by the time Anguish came out everyone and their grandma were soloing Lodi. Lol, Lodizal Shell Shield, I remember the name now. It was great because of the ac on it plus the ability to breathe underwater without casting Enduring Breath (god I actually remember the spell :P) and of course lol it was a back slot item. I think I still had a few of the shells when I quit.

Apparently it was never meant to be a back slot item and was an unintentional bug which they never got around to fixing but by the time they looked into it, there just didn't seem to be any point left to fixing it because well, lol everyone and their grandma were already using it :D

LOL oh god i remember that tunnel, trying to memorize it so you could run through it in the pitch black naked (something you had to do if you died in blackborrow because your torch was on your body along with every single thing you had on you when you died)

And the loud gong when you leveled starlted me so bad i jumped out of my seat more than once.
