Hello all im coming from Fallen Earth enjoyed the game but pvp is lacking right now. It seems like im not the only one as some others from FE have come to the Darkfall flock. Hopefully all will be well eventually. But anyways im interested in the game ive watched tons of youtube videos and read the forums here and on the official forums. I like the fact that theres risk in the game you dont just die and spawn at some town with hardly any penalty. I also like the fact that theres no levels you dont have to rush to endgame to get to the content etc. What ive been reading on the forums is people complaining about the recent patch some people like it and some people dont and there still tweaking it. Magic seems gimped right now am I wrong? Lets say I go with some magic and spend tons of time working on my skills will I be gimped? Also was wandering if there is a skill cap? this game reminds me alot of Ultima Online as well as some things with the user interface (paperdoll button etc) which is cool because alot of people have good olschool UO memories. Also was wandering how the population is and if you see alot of new players. Thanks.

If you go primary mage you won't be gimped. The only problem currently with the game, other than some minor changes to balance risk v reward on staffs, is that scale armor is slightly OP. You'll still be able to own people, but you will have to grind more than a physical damage focus character. Case in point, my character's development pre-patch made me viable in PvP expect in certain situations. Now if I want to use magic I have to get additional utility skills and level my current skills to max

DON'T BE FOOLED, THERE ARE LEVELS.
In fact, Darkfall is ONE OF THE MOST LEVEL-BASED GAMES out there.
A newbie dies in 3 hits to a character with 70 in a weapon skill, and it's IMPOSSIBLE to win against most players until you reach adequate skill levels and equipment rank.
Darkfall is a huge rush to end-game IF you want to participate in PvP.
If you want to just practice your skills and PvE, then DF is not a rush to end-game.
You literally cannot compete in PvP until you have very high skills, which all will require a lot of time and money to raise and purchase. If you try to PvP, you will die in 3 hits, and do 1% of their health in damage per hit.

Like all mmo's, Darkfall does indeed have character progression.
Shocking, i know.
I would much rather be a newb in Darkfall with the ability to dodge and block incoming attacks from more powerful foes, than be a newb in WoW where you get 1 shotted by level 80's. Lets not forget you can wear the same gear as them if you loot a valuable corpse.
You are complaining about NOTHING.
Your gonna love it man, just dont be an alfar were an evil race according to lore, and boy do people show it. Even I will kill any blue I see if they have decent loot, cuz I have a hamlet to live out of and will find a red to kill to get alignment back.
So, you can tell if someone is higher or lower level then you?
This was something I was wondering about. Something I think shouldn't be the case. I think in a pvp based game you shouldn't have any idea what level someone is other then going by the gear they are using.

There is no way to tell how high or low a character's skills are unless you ask them and they tell you. No levels in Darkfall.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb

It's all about team play, new player are gimped but not useless. Take a look at boat fights if you can man a cannon you do same dmg no matter if you are crated yesterday or 6 months ago!! If you are going to play on EU servers try to join guild asap, there is also a guild called New for new players!
No im sorry but you misunderstood me
Blue name = Same Race
Bright Red Name = Same Race Murderer...Attack!
Bright Green Name= Player in your Clan
Dark Green Name = Player in your Alliance
Dark Red Name = Different Race....Attack!
Orange Name = Player in a Clan that your at WAR with.....ATTACK!!!
But no there is no way to see what skill level someone else is except seeing what spells they use, Along with a few other things like armor they are wearing or weapon they are using.
I've been seeing an influx of new players lately. There's no skill cap in the game, however they've implemented an "extension" system which is somewhat like a skill tree system to encourage specialization. As far as focusing on magic, I have seen players do that, although you will still want to develop some of your other skills so you can be versatile in PvP. Sounds like you'll enjoy the game if you like PvP and you've already done tons of research on it. Good luck and see you in game.
Never mind I just read that someone answered my question.
One thing to consider is that by the time you are really competent in the game another expansion will be on the horizon and spells/magic/staffs/robes/etc. will likely be looked at soon. Just do what you want to do and have faith that balance will shift and as long as you have fun you will eventually be a strong player that can win a ton of fights.

I'll tell you what the difference is.. If you gave a newb a mid/high-skilled character in darkfall I'd still be able to roll them with a brand-new character.
On the other hand, if you gave a complete newb a level 80 maxed out character in wow he'd still be able to roll any level 50.

I have to agree with you there, if I had a brand new character with some decent gear I could definately kill a newb with maxed melee. just last night I rolled up on a guy who looked alot stronger then me but i crouched behind him and started with a knockback attack and wham! he was alreayd close to half health. of course he was looking for me from a high point so it wont always work, but trust me theres alot of tactics you can use to get the upper hand in a fight.
I am very glad to learn you can't tell the level of another player.
I keep hearing more and more good things about this game and it is getting tempting to buy the thing.
