Hello everyone, i have been trying to find a great mmo for a long time now, ive played ac, wow, war, aoc, swg, aion...maybe a few more i cant remember, but in everyone i seem to create a highpoint in the game like for wow was getting a mount at 40 (when it was still 40 of course) and in aion getting to the abyss at lvl 25 (and i most likely always will create this highpoint), well every time i stop playing after i get there sometimes never to go back to the game. Anyway i was wondering if you guys and gals think you can go overboard so to speak....i leveled to 40 in a month for wow and then stopped for months because i was wowed out, for aion i got to 25 and played about 1 or 2 hours in the abyss (supposed to be high point) and then havent logged on since.
My brother on the other hand (speaking about wow now) played every once and a while and got up to 50 or 55 dont remember but took him like 5-6 months maybe even a bit more. But his entertainment level seemed to always stay the same right from level 1.
Having said that, my real question is should i take my time like my brother did or continue to play like i have been and keep in mind i am a gamer play a bunch of games and my relative term of overplaying wow or any mmo doesnt come close to some other people who play mmo's.
Ultimately i was thinking of reopening my old wow account and playing again but im scared of played it 4-5 hours a day in the begining never to pick it up again a month later, because i know i should take my time and get into the lore, but i never do....i get the gist (jist, however u spell it) of it and continue. I could always check out aion again little way down the road another key factor in my decision is the population, which i last heard was thousands of subscribers from aion were leaving regularly and going back to their old mmo's or trying new ones....whatever, and when subscribers leave a game, less money goes into it which means less support.
Ive had people tell me to, maybe mmo's arent for you, i really enjoy rpgs like any final fantasy, or mass effect, knights of the old republic etc...and i really enjoy playing with friends online and the community factor, and the idea of playing with thousands of people in your world is just really cool.
Please dont just answer yes take your time or no just play like you do and wait till you find the right one, i need some insight....some wisdom if you will

Play how you enjoy playing. If you chiefly like the reward of character progression, then by all means power level. Your bro likes to enjoy the gameplay, and has no incentive to rush through the content.
Personally I play EvE, where there's no such concept as power levelling, and the players are the content so you can never exhaust it all.
Give me liberty or give me lasers
That's a toughie.
Levelling in WoW has sped up a whole lot since WOTLK landed, but if you didn't enjoy the journey before, chances are you'd hit a wall somewhere along the road again. Only thing I can say is that end-game WoW is a whole different game to the levelling process that leads to it. There's a few months entertainment right there, guaranteed. Getting there is purely up to you. Having guildies to chat with along the way helps. Try bite-size levelling rather than 5-6 hours a day - you shouldn't be playing anything for 5-6 hours a day unless you're enjoying yourself. Play while it's fun to play, stop when it isn't.
I sympathise about Aion, I left the game right around where you did, for reasons that are probably different to yours.
In all honesty, even though I don't play it anymore, WoW has more to offer in terms of freedom than Aion does. It's possible to level to cap without even setting foot in some zones, leaving them open to be visited by an alt and making rerolling less of a "been there, done that" experience. And that's just one example.
Personally speaking, at the moment I'm playing Fallen Earth, and I like it a lot, there's less pressure to hit end-game than in other games, and I find I can just wander around at my own pace, doing whatever takes my fancy and having fun. Which is what, to me at least, MMO's are all about. I left WoW because it started feeling like a second job, and wasn't fun for me anymore.
I'm also really looking forward to SW:TOR as I think Bioware are likely to make the most genuinely RPG-type MMO we've seen for a long time. But that's a ways off in terms of launch....
I'm not big on wisdom (can't you tell?) but I think there's no harm in continuing to play the games you enjoy (RPGS) instead of feeling that you *should* be playing MMOs, until the right one comes along for you. From all that you've said I get the feeling that you'll know it when you play it, and there's no need to feel that you should have your brother's level of excitement for WoW for it or any other MMO.
And yeah, I said a lot of the things you didn't want to hear, and I'm sorry about that, but there's not much more advice possible than that (at least I don;t have any, but my brain is under-caffienated at the moment).
Good luck finding something you enjoy - I'm sure there's something out there for you.
It really all depends on what you are enjoying out of a game. If you're looking for in depth story and plot-lines, regular RPG's might be more down your alley. If you're alright with taking your time, taking things slow, playing and interacting with many other players, then I would say MMORPG's. You really have to enter MMORPG's without too much intention on being the greatest on the server, just enjoy the smashing of various dungeons (or players) and learn to slowly develop your character. Even when you reach maximum level, it seems like there's just too many other things to do that it might overwhelm some people that are looking to trying to do everything.
Ultimately, ask yourself what are your favorite things that you like in video games and compare regular RPGs to MMORPG's and go from there. RPG's provide more depth in their games especially in terms of story and solo gameplay, MMORPG's provide more in terms of having other players there to play and interact with, not so much in story and solo gameplay.
Hopscotch, you didnt run on or talk about anything i didnt want to hear, this is all great insight keep it coming, definetly havent made up my mind, theres just so many pros and cons to both wow and aion...unfortunately.
What i meant by mentioning my brother and his entertainment level never getting to low, was missworded, what i really ment was, should i play like 3 or 4 times a week instead of signing on everyday, thinking the less i play maybe my entertainment levels will stay the same, as his did.
Not at all, you have to find what you really like in a game. This isn't like an exact science here. I chose to enjoy playing MMORPG's because of the people I play with. I just like being around and socializing with people. I log in everyday, but I don't have any less fun than I have since I first started playing the game back in 2004 (if not I have more fun now that more of my friends, family and new found friends on WoW are playing the game with me). It's all a matter of perspective and what you like, you shouldn't have to pace yourself over anything if you truly love what you are doing.
Seems like you get burned out on the normal lvl based mmo's. I would say try a game thats nothing like any of the games you mentioned. Go buy Darkfall!
But you could always go play WoW for a month or Aion again or AoC then think Im board again :P
Playing Darkfall EU1 Server
Only you can answer this question. If you're identical to your brother in personality, addiction, etc then perhaps you will have the same experience. Since you are your own person, however, you'll have to come to this conclusion on your own. No amount of "wisdom" from random strangers is going to change that fact.
For personal input, however, I tend to agree that if you didn't enjoy the process in WoW originally, you won't anymore so this time around. If you're searching for a game that has a meaningful journey that can be enjoyed even on casual levels, WoW isn't the best example as it's primarily end-game focused.
I understand where you're coming from. The more games I seem to play, the harder it is for me to stick with one for more than a month or two since I tend to burn myself quickly. That being said, the major importance to me is playing with my close friends online. There is a line drawn for me, however, and they know I won't be going back to certain games (you can guess which one primarily lol).
I'm still holding out for Turbine to relaunch Asheron's Call, but that dream will probably never come. I've since moved onto FFXI with one of my said friends, but another is trying to get me to jump ship to Eve. I hate my "friends" sometimes.
It's hard for any us of to guess what will work for you but it sounds like you might enjoy Star Wars: The Old Republic when it comes out as it seems likely to be a more story-based MMO and comes from a maker of games you have enjoyed in the past. In the meantime LotRo is probably the closest alternative so maybe you would enjoy that.
As for how much you play it doesn't really sound like you have burned out on previous MMOs, more like they just havn't grabbed your attention sufficiently. If you return to a previous MMO I doubt you will enjoy it anymore than the first time.
There's no catch-all answer. You might simply not enjoy MMORPGs, in which case I'd recommend trying other genres out.
For me, I lost interest at 56 in WOW, back in retail when 60 was the cap. It was too much of the same boring leveling (1-60 quests were always a bit lackluster; serviceable, but a bit bland.) For some reason I started playing again and ran some dungeons and found the game was insanely more enjoyable, and that got me hooked to play it for many years afterwards. Personally I find group mechanics in WOW to be the most enjoyable aspect of the game.

Nah, I don't think you misworded anything : ) Your brother may have maintained a higher interest in WoW than you based on how the game grabbed him from the start. It probably has nothing to do with how long his game-sessions are, he loves the game, he loves to play it. The difference in entertainment levels has little to do with time /played, but has to do with enjoyment of the game itself. For someone who loves WoW, a six hour stretch is nothing, for someone who doesn't, that same six hour stretch is far less fun.
That's all I meant.
My response to feeling tired of WoW and unimpressed by Aion was to try something very different but still a MMO. You might find the same thing works for you, or you might not. Jut remember, if it feels like work, it's not the game for you. Unfortunately, the only person who can assess your fun-level in any game is you. Try using buddy/beta keys for a few other games out there and see how they grab you.
I got burned out of level based games as well. I always felt a bit stuck when I hit the level cap in a game. I think it makes your enjoyment of a game last longer if you take your time to explore the game rather than power levelling through. However, even at a slow pace eventually you hit the level cap. Then you get stuck with the decision between having to raid for gear to continue your progression or re-rolling and playing a different class.
Anyway, you could try out some of the skill based games. A couple that come to mind are EvE or Darkfall. You could also wait for Mortal Online, but I don't think anyone knows when that will be released. Good Luck.
As far as what im going to do when i get one of these MMO's back im going to play at a slower pace then before just to try and not get burnt out cuz i have a feeling, if it happened the first time it will happen again, now i just need help deciding between Aion and WoW.
Please give constructive criticism about both games don't just hate on one of them, if you havent played both please don't reply negatively to only one of the games.
Also i don't know if this was my, but when i played Aion it seemed like the amount of gear you can get was limited because i saw so many people with the same crap on around my level, maybe just a different color from putting dye on, opposed to WoW where it was alot harder to find someone with the same gear.
So is there a massive amount of more gear in Wow than in Aion, i want to make this clear to the amount of gear im talking about that i remember was just from original WoW non of its expansion packs...i only played burning crusade for about a week.
Aion
Pros
quicker/faster paced combat
good running animation for once
great story design
better skill graphics
character design
better animation
PVP is great, and is very important to me
Area design
Cons
to small sometimes
dont like the elite quests would rather have them be instanced with big boss at the end
one starting zone (will get very repetitive to re-roll) there's only one race per side so i understand
WoW
Pros
Love the instances, like the one in Westfall (definitely most memerable)
-probably because i did it like 15 or 20 times
Design is great (graphics still look really good to me and not that bad....i did play AC haha)
love how big it is you explore and find new places all the time
amount of gear and loot in general and its not repetitive looking
storyline was pretty cool
BG's were fun but got boring after a while but i heard they were like WAR now and WAR's were really fun
Area design
Cons
Character design, without gear on alot of the orig characters i think they look kinda lame with their huge ass hands haha
sometimes its too slow
there were a hand full (maybe a little more) of animations that i disliked
(cant believe i almost forgot this) why the crap in WoW now like the Mr. T night elf thing, i played the trial and hes al over the place its ridiculous i think
sometimes its way too long
-i hate how you can do a instance at lvl 60 (before cap was changed) and not get gear it was the worst thing imaginable, what a way to waste 4 hours of your day didnt get to the end of Aion to find out but there was so much gear you could get from the abyss points that looked badass.
whats the deal with Aions vision of the future to, ive heard people say six months ive heard people say it will be over the course of years and ive heard people say the devs dont even know if they will incorporate everything in its (Aions) lifetime, this can help my decision a little bit because it adds alot of cool stuff but if its gonna be over a year i have plenty of time to adopt WoW again for a little while.
Characters on both goes as followed.
Aion
-lvl 25 gladiator (very well designed class liked it alot but started to get slow eventually, should of expected it to though cuz its an mmo)
-chanter, i didnt play one but i heard they were awesome and that was gonna be my next roll, if its a chanter in the vision trailer with the staff that turns into a whip i will definitely roll a chanter if i start up again haha.
WoW (not all these mine, also this is when 60 was the cap)
-lvl 60 pally (literally got to 60 and put it down, when 60 was the cap)
-lvl 50-55 hunter (brothers...dont remember lvl its in between there though for sure)
-lvl 40 mage (fun but after a while it got very repetitive just casting spells)
-lvl 40 rogue (fun and fast paced, i liked how it charged too)
-lvl 20-25 hunter (definetly alot of fun perfect mix of long range and short range, didnt get as boring as pally or mage because the amount of stuff you have to do just for a simple p.v.e. battle is great shoot powerful arrow send int he beast, sit back fire a few more and run up to it at the end to dominate)
Maybe World of Warcraft just isn't for you. Try checking out some of the games listed in the thread "Underrated games that provide a whole new experience" and see if you like one.
You're not quite going to find a Mass Effect MMO yet, and if you want a Final Fantasy MMO, you should be playing FFXI or waiting on FFXIV.
I don't know what you're doing in WoW, lol.
Check out the MUD I'm making!
