Very mixed messages on release date - what do you think?

At the moment, of course, no-one knows for sure when SWTOR will be released. Statements by EA boss John Riccitiello seem to suggest launch date is imminent; others, like mmorpg reviewer Dana Massey, suggest the game has a long way to go before release. While we should, of course, all be patient and the game will be released 'when it's ready' (ha, as if that ever happened in the morpg industry) when do you think the game will actually launch?

This is just a fun poll to get a general idea of when people think SWTOR will be ready to play.

I have been trying to figure this out for quite some time now. There is no direct statement anywhere that I have seen yet on swtor release. I wish it was this Christmas but I doubt it. I am hoping it will be out by Q2 2010. However; I actually hope it is actually finished or at least stable with all features that have been spoken of by the dev's are implemented. Yeah right like that ever happens, but we can always hope. Either way I hope it is out by at least Q3-4 2010 and does not have to roll into 2011.

Its a futuristic space opera game set an even longer long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Of course the release date will be ambiguous and confusing.

I'd hedge a guess that they will try to push it out the door ahead of the release of Wows's Cataclysm.

after how fast Cryptic decided to release Star Trek Online, i honestly have no idea what's possible in the gaming industry in terms of speed of development anymore. i do realize there was alot of overlap with CO, but we will see. there are too many variables to take a guess, including other game releases (as previously noted), economic factors, development snags, desire of release polish, etc.

Q2 2010 would be sweet though!

I personally think, from a business standpoint, they'd be best served follow Cataclysm's launch by about a month.  That would give WoW almost no retaliation on getting back their subs that jumped ship.  It would also give them time to give proper polish and testing if they are ready to go before Cataclysm.  Cause there will be a shit-ton of people jumping on SWTOR servers at launch and to have a bad launch of that magnitude could prove fatal.

With the attention span of todays gamer they would lose subs to WoW if they launched before Cataclysm.  Especially if they have any difficulties at launch.  Then it would be just another game in someone's sig.

Its released when its released. I'm not going to bother speculating because it will just annoy me when it doesn't happen. I just hope they take the time they need to polish it instead of releasing it half created like most other games.

I'd give it 2-3months after cataclysms launch, that's all it will take for most WoW players to get bored of it and ready for a new game.

  • where is the option for 2012? Hehe, from what we see from any other title, and you can only hope Lucasarts are going to do better at is that a major MMO is at least a year from launch when it has it's forst open beta stages. So as soon as they actually let there be proper testing I would love to think they will be a year away. Of course it won't happen, they will come out too early ala Conan and Warhammer and will most likely dissapoint those looking for the wow killer.

Personally I'll be happy if they deliver the Bioware expected 20-30 hours of good story and I don't have to pay past the first month.

I don't think it will be 2011+, basically because I don't see they could keep the hype up for such a long time. See how much screenshots, videos and comics and whatnot they publish already? If the game was 2011 or later, it would be way too long to keep up a pace of interesting news. So my guess is somewhere mid or late 2010.

    I'm still thinking towards a Q4 (Fall) 2010 release.

We will have a better idea when beta starts and at what level of beta. This is Bioware we talking about, they do things their own way and against the norm. (judging by how we get our info and at the pace we get it.)

I do think it overall it will be 2010 release mainly on the fact, EA will be using devs from Mythic too (test etc) as EA has two stables under one roof and WAR at this time can be run on a skeleton staff at the moment.

Considering the lack of information available, im going to say Q4 2010.

If you're not going to speculate, then why bore up my thread with your pointless wittering? Stop trying to spoil other people's fun.

I think Bioware should have kept their mouths shut about the game until it was 6months out.

The first thing I saw about it was in PC Gamer Nov or Oct or Sep 08.

I think that would have been impossible. When Bioware announced a new MMO like 4 years ago(maybe 3 I forget the date) most people expected it to be a KoTOR MMO or they at least hopped so. I think too much info would have been leaked and not on their terms so they are better off coming out with what they have. Just my opinion.

I think it will be out late 2010.

I can feel your anger. This game is defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike this game down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards towards the Dark Side will be complete.

With advances with engines enabling developers to push the product out of the door faster I say 2010. Plus u got 3 AAA companies involved.

No this post wasn't all that serious.

I would guess late 2010. The game has looked playable for some time now. I think it is just a matter of smoothing out the rough edges on things and polishing it up at this point. I think a year is probably enough time for them to do that...

The rate they are releasing information indicates this to me as well. If they keep their current pace, we might know just about everything there is to know by late 2010.

It will be released when EA decides to release it, not when Bioware thinks it should be released.  EA owns them and decides things when it comes down to it, and just like we saw with Warhammer, EA said, "Release it NOW!" and they did and it tanked.  Anyone who thinks Bioware owns or has any control over this should leave there pink skied world and accept that Bioware is now EA.

Sorry EA just ticks me off sometimes, I wish Bioware would have the time they need to make this great but they won't, it will come out only 1/2 done and tick off to many people just because EA will force them to release it.

would be serious disappointed if well known game companies would push out a half done product....they got some brand to protect

Meh, My thinking is it will be 4th quarter 2010, which is right when Cata will launch.  Well, I say that and what I mean is, Bioware will announce a date, and Blizz will make sure their release is very close afterwards.

  • HengistHengist Member RarePosts: 1,315

My hope is that Bioware announces a Q4 2010 release date, and then decides to push it back into 2011. Sure, I'd love to see the game released early in 2010, but more than that, I'd rather see a stable launch of an excellent and high quality product, and I hope that Bioware can hold off EA with that concept. Plus, last reading I had on it, was that the Star Wars live action TV show was due for 2011 would make an interesting tie-in as far as Lucas Arts is concerned.
