Most recent/upcoming major PvP based MMOs:
- Face of Mankind: I personally love it. Mainly the sense of roleplay is amazing, despite what the game is. That enough should say how dedicated the player base is. I also like that it's a sort of FPS but combat is sort of slower to fit the MMO setting.
- Darkfall: I spent 3 days in it and quit. Hated the PvE function and hated the community. The PvE was boring and repetitive and for the first while in game, your PvP experience consists of you getting ganked by some asshat who just wants alliance points for himself. Especially if you're a wolf. People like to pick on the Mahirim for some reason.
- Mortal: Not out yet. Giving me a Runescape sort of vibe. However, I've heard there's NO tutorial whatsoever in it.
- I know I'm missing a few others...

i just picked up darkfall, its ok so far. Havent gotten to far into it. Ill give it a month or so and see how i like it before i could suggest it.
I find i can only stick to games for a long period of time if i have a bunch of real life friends playing, else wise i just wont last.
God damnit john, you are delusional. There is no such thing as alliance points in Darkfall. Either you played it 8 months ago and forgot that it is alignment points or you never played at all. Saying that the PvE sucks now is saying WoW is the most interactive game in history. You have no idea what you are talking about.
EDIT: Another reason why I suspect that you are just trolling is because you aren't taking into account the changes from the recent expansion that made the game for exciting for everyone playing. It sounds like you haven't experienced the changes throughout a 8+ month period in which many of the basic core issues were fixed. PvE is great right now, mobs just need a tweaking and it will be fine.
I was one of those people against the recent PvE changes that made mobs more difficult but I found out that some mobs are worth the effort even though it's extremely risky.

1. I played in September.
2. No I'm not trolling, that was my personal experience.
3. It could very well have been alignment. The guy that explained it to me in-game wasn't great with names.
4. I don't care about the expansion. Unless DF gets a major combat overhaul, PvE is still going to suck. It had nothing to do with the AI. They were good enough except for the occasional one that would teleport somewhere. I came close to death a LOT even with a guildie helping. It had nothing to do with difficulty. To me, it simply sucked.
5. PvP is only somewhat thrilling and once again, I don't like getting ganked 5 times in my first day just because the only 2 things a game leaves apt room for you roleplay is some sort of killer or some sort of crafter.
6. I'm sick of every Darkfall fan trolling other games and then saying that if someone doesn't like the game just because they might not like it and then give the reasons they don't like it, then whether you've experienced it or not, as long as it's not falsifying gaming mechanics, there's no way for you to prove they're trolling. Seriously, I'm trying to possibly save the dude $50, not troll your game. If I wanted to troll, I would have said "Darkfail sucks, lulz" and not responded. =P

Darkfall is good for PvP. You could take a look at EvE as well, if you like the Sci Fi genre
darkfall is p2p is it not? mmm is there like an offer where u can pay for a lifetime membership like LOTRO?
Lets see... Guildwars is somewhat old but worth a try if you havn't played it before, it have no monthly cost and the best arenafights we seen. It have many well balanced classes but only one race.
Eve is not a bad choice either, good large scale PvP there.
WAR is worth a try, it have it's good and bad points but the first 10 lvls are F2P so trying it is free if you have some time.
I would suggest EVE or Darkfall. Both are good, but have very different approaches to PvP.
Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
Darkfall is the best PvP game MMO, imo. Have a good look at it!
This is pure fact atm.
