Is this kinda like other MMORPG's where you can go out and fight monsters to level up? Or are you just constantly fighting other people(guilds), hence the name Guild Wars?

There are huge explorable areas full of monsters to kill. Plus there's a long story with missions chained together where you fight all kinds of stuff. Then there's also the free-form quests that you go looking for from NPCs. These take place in the explorable areas. Lots of monsters to hunt, lots of weapons to find and customize.
What's different is, while you're out hunting or exploring, nobody can sneak up on you and kill you and take your stuff (or the monsters you were hunting). Also, when you die, you just reappear back in town, where you can just start the area or mission again. And you'll never have to wait around while someone else kills the monster you ran 20 minutes to get to so you could kill it.
You dont' lose anything when you die. You respawn back at the town you started the mission from. During a mission though, if you die, you get a death penalty. The death penalty is a 15% drop in Energy, and health. The death penalty builds up with each death, until you reach 60%, which is max. You can lose the death penalty while in a mission by killing monsters and such. But if your whole group dies, and you're portaled back to town, the death penalty vanishes, and you're back at 100%. Also, if you complete a mission, the death penalty dissapears.
Yep, no penatly for dying. Except you'll have to start the mission all over again, so there's definitely an incentive to NOT get killed.
Yeh. dont forget tho, that u only "respawn back in town" when ur whole group dies.
if U die while out on mission, u just go into observer mode with views of ur deady body, or u can view other party members screens. N u stay in observer mode until ur resurrected, u only respawn back to town if u ur whole party dies or u choose to leave mission.
Yeah, following other party members around when you're dead is fun. I only figured out on the last day of the Jan BWE that you could do that.
So basically, if someone survives that can rez you, you're golden. You just come back with 15% less HP and Energy (Death Penalty - DP) and continue on. If all your rezzers die, the whole party is screwed. I got to the very end of a mission once, and both our rezzers died in about 5 seconds, but one warrior got away. He wasn't powerful enough to take on the last few mobs by himself and finish the mission, so we had to just abandon it after an hour or so of solid fighting. It was a bummer, but like has been said, there were no other stupid consequences, so we just started over.
Hmm, so this game seems pretty cool so far. So you actually DO go out and level up your character with groups like every other RPG. Then taking your character to the battlefield to fight others.

You got it. Except that leveling in this game more or less takes care of itself as you go through the story and missions. If you also explore in addition to doing the missions, you'll probably reach level cap before you're done. People were actually getting through all the missions before hitting 20, then going to the hardest exporable areas to finish up. But they had avoided lots of "off the beaten path" stuff on the way in a rush to reach cap during the 3-day event.
After that, it's all about PvP and exploration for its own sake (finding weps, upgrades to armor and weps, skills, etc.)
im really glad for the 20 cap...just feel bad for those gamers who feel they only play mmo's so they can get higher then everyone else :P
Thanks for all of the input on this game everyone. Changes me input on this game greatly.
