I've been away from the boards for a while. Just today, I read a doooooom post due to Klingons being a pvp race only.
How big a focus is pvp in this game? I gotta say, if you're mainly interested in STO for PvP, it seems to me to go against the general flavor of Star Trek.
However, I ask the question because I have always despised and avoided pvp, and if it is to be a major part of the game or even required a certain points, count me out. I don't care what race I wind up playing, if pvp can be forced upon me, a la Eve, I will take a pass.

I guess the amount of doom depends on whether the game was designed that way from the start, or if Klingon PVE was abandoned to make the release date. Either way, I suspect PvE is the prime focus of STO, for better or worse.
It seems like more and more, devs are coming to the conclusion that PvP is an all or nothing element. A game is either all about PvP with minimal or no PvE, or PvP'ers get some token PvP which isn't PvP at all, aka monster play; you play a buffed PvE mob that will be annihilated 80% of the time.
From following the dev chats/blogs and postings on various interview sites I have had the impression that STO was trying to walk that line of 'everything to everybody'. Very tough line to take, but maybe they can pull it off.
I have seen specific quotes from devs that said 'pvp is definitely a part of the game' and 'pvp is completely consentual'. These were the points that encouraged me to pre-order.
I am hoping there will be a viable pve focused game without the need to pvp unless a player wants to enjoy that game mechanic. It is how I interpret what I have seen posted and spoken by the devs. But no one will really know until they can play the game and talk about it which current beta players cannot do. So there is an element of faith in pre-ordering or choose to wait and see after release to make a choice.
Devs said PvP was optional...apparently unless you want to play a Klingon. If you're content to play as the Feds the whole time, you should be able to avoid PvP.
