I am a new user on MMORPG.com, and I've seen some MMORPGs that are hyped a lot by many people, but I fear that some of the MMORPGs that have been hyped are not worth all the hype. So, I ask you, which MMORPGs ARE worth all the hype?
And, a free MMORPG would be helpful. Under these trying economic times, we don't need to be paying more than we already are, and that goes for MMORPGs, as well.

Well, before anyone can actually give you any accurate information you need to supply a little more. What kind of games are you looking for? A certain genre, format, PvP, PvE?
You are right that there are some games here do have a hype rating they don't deserve. The only way you're going to know for sure, even with other players' input, is to see for yourself.
when looking for a good f2p, choose the newest one. They are all pretty much the same mechanics, lots of grind and reliance on cash shops.
If your not picky, dont care about grind, just do a quick scan here of all the f2p games, go with one that sounds interesting and looks decent (make sure you check system requirement and get to know what exact video card you have, its very important in these games). All f2p games are pretty entertaining for a while. Just make sure you get a character to the level cap before deciding to pay for item mall things, often people spend a ton mid game, only to bore once the grind gets crazy toward endgame.
If your looking for a really quality game, your going to need to pay to play it however. And if your an american adult, i highly suggest a p2p, unless you like playing with a majority of minors. Better community (yes despite the jackasses).
If your totally new to mmorpgs i suggest playing a f2p with group oriented gameplay, so if you ever decide to upgrade to a solid p2p, youll at least have the tank/heal/dd mechanics down, allowing a shorter learning curve for raids/mass pvp. Switch games often, get a feel for them, you can always come back and pick up where you left off, even years later on a f2p.
I'm not looking for any particular MMORPG, just a good one.

Lotro, Wow, EQ2, Aion, EVE
All the so called "block busters", the higher the population the better the game... Apparently .
EDIT:
An excellent, epmphasis on excellent, FTP mmorpg is Eternal Lands. I can guarrantee that it will live up to you're expectations.
Make it so...
Try Istaria : Chronicle of the gifted, named Horizon in the past.
You can have a free account if you are willing to only play a humain, wich is still pretty nice.

Hard to say. The good MMO's are a bit long in the tooth. The bad ones should have never been born. My advice would be to check back in a year; there should be some good (new) offerings starting to come out of the woodwork by then.
The one in my sig.

ah and keep an eye on Guild Wars 2

"Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
It would be better for you to pick up Shadowbane today and try to subscribe rather than play perfect world. I have never seen a game that is so pay to win in my life. Console seem to be where it will be in 2010, I haven't really seen much other than Blade and Soul that looks worth trying and that will have to be on a beta or free trial. I will never pay for an NcSoft game without being able to try it again.
If you're looking for something to just pick up and play and not be too serious about you really can't go wrong with WoW. This expansion is focused almost 100% on the casual player and that doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon.
If you're looking for something more challenging and competitive, EvE and Darkfall are both good games to consider. Just don't come back and complain there aren't millions of casual players in your non-casual game.
As for F2P, I really can't endorse it. It's not really free - you'll be a 2nd class player (if that) until you pony up, one way or the other.
Dissappointment is often created by expectations, often not very realistic ones.
Hype is another thing people should NOT believe in, as it can already limit your dissappointment.
Honostly I never felt any MMORPG was worth the hype people gave it. As I still feel and see more people/players creating hype then I see company's creat it, sure some company's creat a certain hype but that's just obvious with any type of product, but it's up to us players to look thru something like that.
The only thing YOU can be sure if a game is fun or worth it is by actuall playing games and find out if they are worth it by own experiance, no ammount of hype, fanboyism, bashing should ever change that.
Now there are plenty of MMORPG I truly dislike, but I disliked them due to having played them and they didn't suite my playstyle, it wasn't hype that got me in these games, it wasn't fanboyism that got me in these games, it wasn't because of what was promised that got me in these games. It's my own choosing that got me in these games and sometimes a MMORPG can suprise me, but more often they are a let down as many just end up multiplayer games where there is hardly a world feel to them.
Obvious at some point we all can get dissappointed, but overall when I see forums like this I feel many others get dissappointed more by promises made by game company X or due to hype, fanboyism, or bashers......Instead of the actuall game that is given.
Eve online will disappoint... unless you enjoy sleeping while playing.
