Depends on the holiday patch. MegaTen's Christmas patch where a few plasma drops gives you a neat demon? I like. Shaiya's nifty weather change? I like. Runes of Magic's Halloween event? Not so much.
Here's another... Queynos, evil city... Christmas Tree. AND PRESENTS!
whoa... Qeynos is an evil city?
Also, I didn't know that any of L2's cities were 'evil.'
now, now let's not be picayune. Isn't Qeynos an evil City? is it just the ruler who is evil? Last I saw on the character creator the races of queynos were evil. That's what the character creator said. If that is not true then fine, I won't argue Everquest lore as that doesn't go to the true point.
And no, Aden is just a city. But it still doesn't diminish that fact that players have decorated it with christmas trees which I believe is the point of the thread.
If for some reason you have an issue with me saying evil city then cheerfully withdrawn and take the holiday decoratioin point.
I don't like them. If others do then fine. Again, I wouuld prefer holdays that made sense to the world.

The die hards who want everything in the game to tie into lore and everything to be realistic are far fewer then the people who play a game just to have fun and enjoy seasonal content.
I don't take my games seriously because they are just that, games. So I enjoy when there's limited time holiday content to change things up and add a bit of light hearted fun to the game.
Would I leave a game because it didn't do holiday content? No, but a game that took things that seriously is most likely a game I would get bored with fairly quickly and quit anyways.
I unsub around the start of dec and remain unsubbed to anything until around march partly due to the waste of money the holidays are anyway and party due to the holiday crap in game
Grouping in Old school mmo's: meeting someone at the bar and chatting, getting to know them before jumping into bed. Current mmo's grouping: tinder. swipe, hookup, hope you don't get herpes, never see them again.
The die hards who want everything in the game to tie into lore and everything to be realistic are far fewer then the people who play a game just to have fun and enjoy seasonal content.
That's probably very true.
Look, in the end it's arguing taste. One can't argue taste. It's like people saying that wearing Blacks and Grays have no sense of color. Probably they just like the statement that blacks and grays make.
There are people who involve color in a lot of what they wear. And not because they are color blind and don't realize they are wearing green pants and a red shirt with yellow socks. But they match up colors between tie, pants, socks shirt. They might adopt one color palette and then offset it with a bold and possibly contrasting color. Heck, there was even a point when one said "black and brown don't go". And then came a time where people started mixing black and brown.
Point being is that what someone sees as drab or dull another will see as interresting or perhaps understated.
To get back to the holiday stuff, there are people here in the states who dress up their houses with as many lights as possible. In some cases there have been news stories of neighbors complaining because people are slowly driving down their street so they can see these lit extravaganzas.
Some people call these houses tacky and others see them as extremely fun and very robust expressions of holiday spirit.
Personally I don't believe in making value judgments toward people based on whether they wear colors as opposed to blacks and grays, light their houses up like fiery beacons into the night or put gnomes on their front lawns.
However, I always think it's ok not to like things. I dont see it as seeing the other person as being bad or "less than". Just that you don't share the same aesthetic taste.
so you might see more world or lore based holidays as being drab and I see them as being clever.
and for the record, though I don't like traditional holiday decorations in games I do enjoy the houses that have a lot of lights. So much so that I'm taking a yearly tour this saturday of houses that exhibit over the top lighting decoratons.
So I can see where people find the fun in it.

Stupid looking Santa hats in Planetside, I remember my friends not playing that game back in 2003 until they were taken out. Stupid Bat Wings in SWG or Ewoks with Hearts or the annoying life day in SWG which all just look stupid. EQ2 you have these stupid presents, snowmen and Christmas trees about the place which just make the game world looks so stupid. I just wish they left them outta the frigging games. I mean in them Universes theres no Jesus or Valentines day or any of that crap so LEAVE IT OUT!
the fact that it has holiday patches just adds extra content and changes the mood of the game. Scrooges like you were anticipated but no one cares. so Ba humbug
Depends on the state of the game in general. It's ok in games like WoW or LotRO because they've already got heaps of content and features developed. My problem with temporary content is when it's prevalent in feature poor games like WAR. Some games are crying out for permanent content and temporary content just makes you wonder why they are wasting development resources that could be better spent fixing the game.

I wasn't contesting your statement. I was just surprised to find out it was an evil city since it is the one that's named after the company.

apologies!

Someone is confused. In EQ2 Qeynos is the good city and Freeport is the evil city.

The picture shown is of Freeport.
Yes that is true, you are correct.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
/sigh....Qeynos was one of two original cities in EQ2. Qeynos is comprised of the good and neutral races, i.e. Dwarves, Wood Elf, High Elf, Gnome, Kerra, etc., and is ruled by the benevolent Antonia Bayle. Freeport is the evil city and embraces such races as Barbarian, Kerra, Dark Elf, Troll, etc., and is ruled by the evil despot Lucan D'Lere.
Yes, the holiday content can be a little silly, even a little overboard in EQ2 and several other games, but c'mon...it is, after all just a temporary occurence. Not only that, but in EQ2 at least, if you don't like the holiday stuff, then go adventuring. The only place you'll find all the decorations and holiday quests are in the cities. If you are roaming the world questing, running instances, or what have ya, you'll never see a single decoration or holiday quest. The OP seems to be someone who just loves to bitch for the sake of bitching.
It adds spice to the everyday grind I guess, but then the events have to played right as well.
Personally I hate the stupid idea that holiday events must give 'exclusive' items that can be achieved only at certain time, I'd prefer it to be more of a social thing that encourages some amount of interactivity with others. But then ofcourse MMOs these days, even if they implemented anything like it, would never have enough people enjoy/participate it.
I use to hate EQ2's xmas crapola it was so badly done that I use to log for the entire festive period and play other games, giant candy canes and snow goblins do not fit into a realistic world (well EQ2 version of realistic)
Because WoW already looks like a santa parade most days the festive crud doesnt bother me as much...I guess its all about the game world and how much it breaks the immersion.
I'm not a fan of them... only because when people ask "So... what did you do for the holidays?" If my reply is "I spent most of my time farming snowballs and coal to build the Uber-Snoman to fight away the Mecha-Grinch, and as a reward everyone who participated at Noon on Christmas Day in the battle got Epic Hats that give +(X) to my stats! I chose the Ultra Violet Glowing antlers!"... it never seems to impress family members or friends.
In game holidays based around the IP is cool... but being torn between doing special events in MMO's based around RL holidays, or actually participating in the RL holiday, sucks.
"There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain."
One untapped facet of this market... something no MMO has done, but would be profitable to do... would be to create their own 100% unique holidays within their game world.

I agree. I play games to get away from the RL world to immerse myself in a fantasy world. But that is ruined by stupid holiday events with pumpkin heads and all kinds of silly stuff.
