I say somewhat because I have tried EVE out 1-2 years ago, but I am about to give it another go now. I don't think I really gave it a chance back then because I was so into other games at the time.
I got a fresh 21 day trial key from someone on this forum (thanks). Now I am wondering about what "build" to start of with to not gimp myself. I would like to get into pvp asap even if it means a few months to actually reach the point of being useful. I heard something about "tacklers" in a few threads, and that seems like the best place to start.
I read through the links given in the stickies, but there is just so much info to go through. I couldn't find just a straight up guide for "tackling" or whatever. I could use a creation setup, and a general skill up direction if anyone is willing to chime in.
Can't wait to give this game the chance it deserves. I love space games and pvp.

Tacklers = fast ships with warp scramblers or disruptors fitted. Initially this will mean frigates but you'll want to skill up for interceptors asap. Doesn't matter which race, really, so have a browse through the ships and see which interests you. Eventually, if you want to follow through with the 'tackle' route, you'll train Inderdictors and then Heavy Interdictors but in the meantime, feel free to skill up your cruiser skills to be a light support damage dealer and give yourself another string to your bow.
You'll also want to look at ways to earn money. This depends on your personality and time issues but generally people will earn ISK by doing missions (meaning quite a heavy grind and training up for Battleships eventually), exploration (meaning training for ships that can handle the exploration content - be that mining, combat, or whatever), production (meaning training the skills necessary to build what you want to sell), or trading (meaning basic business acumen as well as training the skills needed to maximise profits).
Most importantly, you'll probably want to find a group of players that share similar goals to yourself and you can stand to hang out with for any length of time, since trying to accomplish anything in this game by yourself is very hard work. There are a number of good places to begin. Eve University and Agony Unleashed run very good beginner courses in aspects of EVE and can be great springboards into other things. Otherwise, many good corps have low skillpoint requirements and can give guidance as to what you can accomplish in the game.
Hope some of that helps. It's been a long while since I first started and things have changed a lot since then. I was fortunate to find a good corp very early in my play experience but feel free to be choosy about who you fly with. There are very very good corps out there and they're not all super-famous, massive entities. In fact, most aren't very big at all.
Good luck!
As a new player, your first priorities should be on securing a source of income and finding a good corporation.
Do missions for a bit to learn the fundamental combat mechanics, while you're doing this you'll be training some of the core skills you'll need. Read the official recruitment forum at least daily, join the in-game recruitment channel and keep your eyes open. Your new corpmates will give you a lot more help than we on the forums can, and as a genuine rookie pilot your solo abilities are almost nonexistent, especially if you want to pvp. You'll need friends first, then you can go pewpew.
This may be the best new player OP I have seen and you are correct in everything you said. EVE university, faction warfare, and Red vs Blue are probably the best places to learn PVP as a new player. Either way it is essential that you get into a good PVP corp. You can be a highly effective tackler in months and a dominate PVPer in less than a year. I don't know if this sounds like too long of a time frame but it is the truth. Anyone that say's it takes longer to be dominate in this game is just plain wrong. If you are serious about PVP train the Amarr weapons systems for sure. You can train anything you like, but be sure to include these. This is something that changes with time, but at the moment they are the best for pure damage (not so great a tackling tho so you may want another ship for that).
EDIT: Tackling requires altleast 3 mid slots and most Amarr ships only have 2. Gallente and Minmatar have the best tacklers.
Thanks for the replies guys. Gonna go with Gallente I believe. Is there a good website that shows what weapons/armor/etc skills are good choices to train for tackling? I looked through the stickies like I said, but there is just so much info that I couldn't find the particulars.
Still the best route training the learning skills first as well? I hated that part last time I did the trial, but it just has to be done.
