Looking for a Free to Play MMO, help appreciated.

TrojanLordTrojanLord Member Posts: 26

As the title says, I'm looking for a f2p game.

I enjoy fantasy games, not really into the sci-fi thing.

I'll mention some of the games I've played;

World of Warcraft

Cabal Online

Perfect world

The Chronicles of Spellborn

Runes of Magic

And more, of course, but they're not worth mentioning as they didn't last long.

I didn't like the "feel" of RoM, if you get what I mean. TCoS wasn't really my thing, with the rotating skill bar and stuff.. Perfect World got boring fast. Still play Cabal a bit, but it isn't really doing it for me anymore.

I really enjoyed WoW, especially the quests and large world. Lots to do and see, but I'm not really willing to pay monthly to play a game. A one-time payment would be fine.

pvp is not important, don't care for it at all. It can be in the game, as long as it's not forced on you.

I've looked around for a while, haven't found anything, so i finally decided to post a thread here.

So, yeah..

Any suggestions? More info?

I do appreciate any help you can offer.

MegaTen is a good PvE experience.

Wizard 101 can be surprisingly good, as well. ;)

In general, I'd check the Underrated Games thread at the top of this forum. It's got some great obscured games and I made sure it was color coded to find the free ones easy. =D

I think you would love Allods Online, but it's not really out yet. You could sign up for closed beta, and maybe even get in, but the downside is that there isn't too much available to do yet, and if you do really like it you will just have to start all over when it goes live I believe.

If you don't mind turn based combat Atlantica was a pretty good MMO, I'm really digging Dragonica Online but it's a 3D side scroller dipped in cute lol (but definitely a high quality feel to it, and super fun IMO).

Ummm some of the games I thought of that are similar to what you mentioned  (but haven't played), one was called Rohan blood feud and another was called Soul of the Ultimate Nation, although I think pvp is forced on you eventually in those games... erm Guild Wars has a free trial going on now lol (but it bothered me to no end that my character couldn't jump).

If you don't mind a cutesy game I tried out this one called Grand Fantasia and it was ok, but I heard about another game called Ether Saga Online and I haven't played but the makers are the same as Perfect World, and Perfect World was pretty good quality. I hear ESO is good quality too and it has kind of a pokemon thing going on with the pets you can catch and use in combat as any class.

Haven't played, but that game does look good as well forgot to mention it. Also forgot to mention Dungeons and Dragons Online I haven't played it, but it sounds like a good fantasy PvE option.

Ah, thanks for the replies. I'll check out the games mentioned :]

Atlantica did look quite good, but I don't feel like turn based combat would fit in an mmo, not for me at least...

I have my eye on Allods, but as you say, it's not out yet. Waiting til the beta tests are over n_n

I don't mind cartoony or cutesy graphics.

Atlantica is a decent game.  Personally, I didn't care for the combat, but I loved the uniqueness of it.  Gates of Andaron isn't bad, got the whole bastard child of WoW and FFXI going for it, and DDO is also pretty unique, with the twitch style combat and the dungeons.

Personally, I thought it was a rip-off. However, even without being listed it has a ton of players so it's gotta have SOMETHING going for it. In any case, I only made it to lvl 5 or so.

I also hated how when you used WASD movement, when you turn, everything gets choppy at the edges of the screen. It could have been fixed by now, but it annoyed the living hell out of me.

Game seemed to run smooth for me, but yeah, it is a bit of a rip off.  I just thought I'd toss it out there, since its one of those games that isn't terrible, and could be something they might like.  Hell, I keep going back to WoW, so we know my taste in games ain't that great :p

Lol, it ran fine for me. Until I tried that.

Also, yeah...I keep switching MMOs. I can't find any one that I keep wanting to come back to.

I think Atlantica is definitely worth trying out. I know when I heard about the turn based combat I was a little put off, but actually playing it, it far exceeded my expectations. If you liked the play style of the earlier final fantasy games you would probably love this because it's faster and more intuitive. The combat is handled quite well and is somewhat fast paced, and at the same time you have to make smart strategic decisions or you die.

It is a really good game, but the main reason I'm not playing it is because you control a small party of people, and while you can group with other people you don't really play a definitive role in a party (IMO anyway). I like MMORPGs where I go in as a healer, tank, or DPS and that's what I do and other people do what they do and we have to cooperate to get the job done.

     ---

Edit: I also remembered if you liked Cabal you might like Shaiya or a game like that, but personally I wasn't interested in either.

The best game I could recommend right now that is F2P would be Dragonica Online, because I can log on for a few hours and just have a lot of fun playing and it doesn't feel like a grind to me (because of the fast-paced-button-mashing-combo-scoring combat, variety of monsters, variety of quests, dungeons, and the focus on community and grouping) or like the MMO is a side job (I don't have to show up at a certain time for raids or what not :P) The game is mostly PvE with a bunch of instances, story line and tons of quests, etc. There is PvP but it's tucked away and completely optional (little arena type battles you can do after level 20, and you can also initiate duels I believe). One of the highest quality F2P games I've played from the graphics, to the interface, to all of the little details. I love the classes and how you can evolve them, you can put talent points in to make your character more PvP oriented or more PvE oriented or go for both. The game also has a bit of humor, like for the priest you can get a move called "Flasher" and it literally show one of the little bad guys in the game flashing (but only from the side view thankfully) and it stuns your opponents lol.

I'm playing the THQice version, so not sure about the other versions, but from the loading screens to the towns in game, to wandering about you can definitely tell it's Christmas time from the decorations to the holiday related quests, to receiving Christmas gifts in the mail. It also has professions, an auction house, mail boxes, everything you would expect to find in an MMO and it has other things like a couple system (I think it's pretty cute). BUT if you couldn't get past it being a side scrolling game then stay away :P (but I should mention that you can move in 3 dimensions in towns)

OH! I'd take a serious look into City of Eternals.

Couldn't stick with Face of Mankind or what? xD

Nope. More like frustrated as hell that I ran out of space for Face of Mankind and am desperately looking to get an external HD so I have the space to play it.

CoE just looks cool. It's casual anyways. ;)

Dungeons n Dragons Online would be my suggestion.  Decent PVE with quests more than the mundage "go get me 4 rat tails".  The style is very western, and the dungeon master monologue adds a unique touch.

    ..

the only reason i dont play DDO myself at the moment is.... i just dont have enough time, what with Eve online, a wife and a dog, a job,  and the need to sleep and eat occasionally.. im lucky if i get to play the odd hour of dragon age origins...

I'm thinking of giving it a go actually, but my questions are:

    1. Can your character jump in the game?

    2. How much is grouping/partying promoted? Is it rewarded or punished? (like do you lose a lot of exp in groups)

    3. Is there a decent amount of content at level cap and on the way to level cap?

Yes, and can jump higher/farther with points spent on it.

    2. How much is grouping/partying promoted? Is it rewarded or punished? (like do you lose a lot of exp in groups)

Its very promoted.  Think of it like trying to play the table top game solo.  Not much fun without a group.  Can be done.

    3. Is there a decent amount of content at level cap and on the way to level cap?

Yes and no, and here's the tricky part.  You're better off spending the 15 a month to not have to keep grinding the same dungeons over and over, which is what you'll end up doing to get to the cap.  There is a ton of content though, just not a lot of free quests.

Thanks for the response I'll probably give it a shot when I have enough free time :)
