Hmm.. maybe the guy who bought the said 'virtual island' in PE will build community shops that will "treat some homeless people to a nice meal and/or help a family who can't afford to buy their kids presents."

I would hesitate to call it worthless until we see what he makes developing the land. Tell me the difference between a RL real estate developer who buys land and develops it and this? Besides the obvious pixels isse I do not see any difference. These ppl are in it to make money. And they most likely will make alot of it.
Do I honestly have to answer this? What can one get out of virtual real estate? RL real estate is made of dirt, grass, trees, sand, etc, etc ,etc. Virtual is made of 1's and 0's. RL real estate you actually own it, virtual you do not. The company may claim you do, but you are still at the mercy of the DBA and Devs. They can still say in 1 year or even 1 month that they decided that the game is not going in the direction they want it to so they will flip the switch and shut the game down. Virtual property is then destroyed and not coming back.I can understand people who spend some money here and there on virtual items, but not that much. There is no point.
Answer this little dilemma. Say that I am this hacker. One day I decide to hack into the servers that maintain the world of Project Entropia, the same world that houses this little island. Ok, now say that I target this island, and delete all traces of this island from this world. The company that gives access to the world of Project Entropia does not "own" this island. Who is then responisble for the integrity of that data? Is it the owners? Or is it the developers and programmers? Should there now be virtual "insurance" to insure virtual property from damage? How would a court handle this? How would the actual value be determined? This next comment refers to US courts alone because I am not sure the working of courts in other countries. Courts award damages based on actual value, not amount paid. For example. Say I pay $27,000 for a watch and you break it, but the watch turns out to be a generic $5.00 walmart watch. How much am I awarded? $5.00, not $26,000.
What's my point? The point is that the creators did not set this business plan in motion without looking at all factors and consequences invloved. And yes, in the end I still think it is completely idiotic and assanine to spend $27,000 on a piece of data that you can only see with the use of a computer and that you can never touch or smell.

All interesting questions that I am sure will be answered in the future of MMORPGs. And I agree with you it is crazy to spend that amount of money on something so risky. However, this is not inherently different from any other investment. It has risk and will have reward if the game stays alive. As a plyer for two years I can tell you that he WILL make his money back if the game stays alive.
Sounds to me like he got his money worth. For $26.50 US, he gets an entire island. Very good deal IMO. I don't play Project Entropa but it still sounds like a good deal to me. Yes, $26.50 NOT $26,500. The bid was $265.00 PED with 10 PED = $1. To get the correct amount you would have to DIVIDE by 10 not multiply by 100 as everyone else seems to be doing.

I can assure you that it was 26500$ based on two years playing and following the auction war ingame. To get some perspective on the values of certain items in PE we could talk of one of the best rated armours ingame. You would atleast have to pay +350$ for it. And the best medpack was recently sold for around 4000$ or 40000 ped.
Crazy it is but some people like myself play it as a great online game with a mature and respectful community, and deposit like you would pay for a month of WoW but in the end of our month with carefull playing you can have more then you started with.
One of this months British gaming magazines had an article about this (possibly Edge, can't remember) that said the person who bought the treasure island was planning to divide it into smaller plots and sell them off.

Answer this for me Dekron, Virtual in-game items are made up of 1's and 0's, yet people go ahead and buy those items off of MMORPGs for real money, the company claims ownership, but does that stop them from buying it? No, so basically, buying this island is like buying items and weapons in-game, except with the island, you can sort of have virtual real estate.
And as for your whole hacking scheme, you may have a valid point, but that MMORPG has so little attention that hackers don't even bother, which is kind of a plus in their case. There are a lot of questions pertaining to this real money that I'm sure the developers haven't even asked themselves of the reprocussions, they just hope that nothing like this will happen.
2)he bidded way over his head and would not pay up.
3)he plans to resell the pieces of land to others .
I think 3 is most likely. He probably did an ingame survey and found he can make a profit and did this.
But then again it is risky. Its easy to ask a 12 year old in game does he think he would pay $2000 for a piece of land and he would go "woot.that ownz i pay double that for that leet land!".
And of course the buyer probably thinks he is talking to a 30 something old
yes the guy paid $26,500 USD. He's a 22 year old. He'll make it back several times over relatively quickly. The game isnt all bad. Its a bit buggy and it could be ALOT better but i play it and i even enjoy it at times.

heh most people pay $15 a month to own virtual items :P the whole argument against the sale of virtual items is flawed since mmorpgs are at their very essence virtual space filled with virtual items and anyone who plays them is paying monthly to have the right to own and use those items. In most games your paying a monthly fee for server upkeep, bandwidth usage and corporate profit. With PE your doing the exact same thing but you can also hit the jackpot and cash out with the companies blessings. If you think you can play without putting money in your kidding yourself. In order to play it your going to have to spend $15-20 a month for a year unless you get lucky a few times and hit the big money.
Whether you agree with the system or not thats up to you. I give them high marks for being creative in their approach to gaming. Theres far to little creativity these days.
All that being said the game is full of bugs. The bugs are really starting to wear down my enthusiasm for the system. Like many companies they're more concerned with putting out more content rather than making the system more stable and fixing the exploits.

PE is a study of economics really. The guy who bought this island has already made his money back. There are minerals to mine on the island, mobs to hunt that drop loot and land to be developed with houses. All these things carry an ingame value. Oh and i would have paid that much for the island in a heartbeat if i had made that money in game. It was like buying a blade of carnage for 10kpp and being able to sell it for 300kpp. It's really a no brainer.

There's one difference you are overlooking. The value of shares which exist in a company is a finite number. Yes, stocks split and merge, but the resulting value of the split/merge is always the same as what it was before. I.E $100 stock splits, the value of each stock then becomes $50. And as someone stated once before, if someone pulls the plug on the stock market, you're stock that you have is still a tangible asset which you have invested in a company. If someone pulls the plug on your virtual world, what do you have to show for it?
In a game like P-E, whats to stop the developers from just coding up some items and putting them on the auction block? That's income from nothing. Yes, it takes time to code these things up but once you have written the code for a "medpack" making many of the best medpacks is simple. I'm sure by going this route, the developers are making alot more money than charging people $10-%15 a month.
It kind of bothers me how people are playing these games to make money rather than have fun. I mean, go ahead, but it just gets to me people are turning games into buisnesses rather than just games. If I recall the first game to do this was Second Life.
Maybe I'm just jealous, but does anyone else get a wierded out feeling when someone tries to play a game purely for profit?

I don't believe most people play PE with profit as the motive. HINT: IF everyone profited from the game they would go broke! The company has to make money so not everyone is getting back what they put into it. You really have to be lucky and savvy. Kinda like the real world. So before you download the game and think hey i can make some cash just remember that odds are you wont. Odds are you'll be putting in $15-20 a month for ammo and upkeep just as the games creators intended. Before you say this is a stupid concept and write the game off remember its "free" to try (if you like pain) so you should at least try it out. The developers have put alot of effort into the game.
the game isnt free though.. thats a myth. you can get started by sweating mobs. that is using your mental powers to extract sweat from mobs and sell that sweat to crafters. this is a boringly tedious process that is 100x worse than the original EQ grind. eventually you "attune" to the universe and you can no longer sweat and when this happens guess what? your gonna be buying ammo with your credit card.
