The AC2 engine did suck

ElapsedElapsed Member UncommonPosts: 2,329

Take that scum bag fanboys that denied it for all these years or liked to accuse my hardware! Why did AC2 fail? I assure you it didn't succeed because of the great engine.

There are complaints all over the DDO (which, for those who don't know, is based off the AC2 engine) about the laggy and under performing engine. And again a smart poster came to the same conclusion that the game is poorly written and does far too many hard drive reads.

Will Turbine actually listen this time and fix the problem? I doubt it. I get the feeling they don't even play their own game. I don't get how the lag/stutter issue could have gone unaddressed through AC2's entire life, beta to death. I suspect though that the fanboys denial of the issue played into Turbine's mind and gave them reason not to fix it.

I tried to give AC2 a chance, more so than most players. During the game's original few months my computer would spontaneously crash, and more often than not, reboot without warning. Typically, this would happen at complete random.

    But I wasn't alone.

All my friends had the same issue, too. We /bugged and reported, nothing ever came of it. What did it turn out to be? A little thing called EAX. One of my friends disabled it in random fit of turning one thing off, one thing on to try and resolve the issue.

It was bad enough that the chat servers didn't even exist, but turning on EAX actually fixed the issue on all our systems. We reported the bug, which was a major crasher. Six months later it was still not fixed. We were told it was our drivers, our computers, that our systems were "probably just overheating".

    . . .

Unfortunately, it was just shoddy coding and implementation.

Yes I recall the sound issue, I think it was only for certain sound cards. That wasn't the problem. EAX is off by default in DDO I believe anyway.

It was such a good game but as soon as more than a few other players were in the general vicinity I would lag for about 30 seconds. It used to drive me nuts and eventually drove me away.

Like I say, it was a good game just poorly implemented.

Having pixel shaders enabled would cause GeForce 4200Ti and older video card users to crash desktop.  I almost quit the game before I figured it out.

Kinda weird i never had one problem playing it and i have 2 lvl 50 toons in AC2. I never had stutter problems in AC2, but i do in DDO. The underlayment associated with the water layers cause tremendous lag spikes, and its not my machine or t1.

While the engine still is very aggressive, aside from a few memory leaks, the engine is nice.

Rarely did I have problems with the engine once I had the proper equipment to run it.  However, people being able to run it is a question in itself - See AC2, EQ2, and within the next two years Vanguard.

Archlord, supposedly the most popular mmo in Asia atm, uses it (with a Lineage art design) - that's just something to look out for to see how they utilize the engine.  To be honest I see them bringing its character out to a fuller extent than Turbine did.

AC2, did have its issues.. the only real problem i had was the chat problem they had for a little while were chat would end up being delayed -- and of course the rubberbanding

Other then that,  AC2 Darktide was by far the best mmorpg gaming experiance I have had to date...

I miss the epic guild vs guild battles.. the search and hunt, to collect avengence on someone who killed you when you were busy fighting a mob...   the guild spirit and loyalty,  the ability to kill a guildmate for being stupid...

Gawd that game was great!  I truely miss it!  tobad someone didnt get the source and ran their own private server  :(

If someone knows of one.. hehehe let us know!

oh and,  the whole entire problem and transition from microsoft to turbine taking full control of the game is what killed it...   no game on shelf for almost a year and new games comming out  like final fantasy xI and WoW killed the game and by the time they started advertising again it was already to late --most moved on...  despite all the new stuff they put into it at the end...

Lotr is is BASED on same AC2 engine lol i dont hear many complains from them, ac2 was way ahead of its time grafhics wise.

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

     Actually...

the engine is quite spiffy.  DDO and LotRO perform fine.  The only gripe I have is the lack of seamless interior to exterior/exterior to interior.

Ironically, when AC2 came out, its graphics were quite advanced for its time, and in some ways, was the AoC of its time in that regard.  There was a lot of bad about AC2 but there was a lot of good as well.  Unfortunately, most of the good came in the form of smaller, underrated features such as the instrument system(precursor to what was done in LotRO) and cliff diving.

There was alot more that made AC2 awesome its just that most did not give it chance fence sitters condem AC2 becouse it was not same as ac1.

Im 100% sure if they would have relaunched AC2 after legions it would still be running becouse game was and still is so much better then most mmo's out there.

Never played AC1. But I loved AC2. Saddy RL issues Prevented me from playing mutch. when I got back and was able to play the servers were down :(

And the point of this thread is ?  LOTRO engine is pretty much an upgrade version of the AC2 engine and it works fine.

AC2 failed because it was nothing like AC1.....not even close.   If lost its fan base.....and there were other mmo's that were released in that time period that had more appeal....i believe WoW was one of them.  Having a complete change from that original, that was very solid, was not a good idea.

AC2 had one of best community's ever plus it was a awesome quest game with fellowships.

It was open free game that never got bored a good skill system with a skill tree you could shape however you wanted and mobs shouted talked and all had different enemys towards the three races and vocally let you know when you came near.

It had one of best death scenes of mobs in mmo's ever.

World was beautifull and i was lucky to play it on a rather good pc back then so i saw it in its full glory.

And with music instruments you could stay ingame for hours just play music in cragstone near nexus a meeting place also for raids for dugeons.

It had no instance all was open to all a complete free world to explore or faster travel with portals.

You could craft while you where hunting or sold crap loot get gold by putting in your trashcan:)

And so many more good featers in AC2 to mention them all:)

    AC2 was awesome !

For one who is trying to imply that other posters are stupid, you sure fail to show your own ingenious mind. AC2 was released on November 22, 2002 and closed December 31, 2005... Still think it closed within a year?
