What was your FAV MMO of 2009 ?

As the year draws to the end and the beginning of a new one this year brought, forth, a lot of new MMOs along with previous ones. In 2009, what was your favorite MMO and why? Your favorite MMO does not have to be one that came out this year; it can be any (UO, AO, etc.). Just why did you find it to be your favorite? Something new to it? Added content that improved it? You can list more than one if you would like. And please just explain why you enjoy yours and don't bash on others.

Mine would have to be Fallen Earth. This was my "MMO" year. My first MMO was WoW, in 2008. This year I tried out a bunch. LOTR, FFIX, AoC, AO, UO, Dragonica, Darkfall, Ryzom, WAR, Aion. The only MMO that kept my attention was Fallen Earth. I think it was because it was nice to not be in the classic fantasy setting (ie Elves, Dwarves, etc.). I also enjoy how the game looks so desolate and bland looking that it actually looks really nice and suits the game. The community has been astounding; one of the best. I enjoy the crafting a lot and the combat seems to be a lot different than most. Just something about this game that makes me want to keep playing it.

If you read the OP it did not pertain to MMOs that only came out this year, but also previous.

In that case my favorite mmo of 2009 is the same mmo that was my favorite from 2006, 2007, 2008 and today.

Easily Darkfall Online.  Nothing else comes even close to offering the same level of gameplay and feature set.

EVE Online wins for yet another year.     Get past the learning curve and find yourself some friends and you will find countless hours of fun.     The great thing is there is still unlimited potential for its future and there is always something new to learn in game.

To the poster above me;  Sorry, IMO DarkFall was easily the worst "game" released this year but I guess to each their own.

At Darkfall release I might have agreed with you.  Since then the game has VASTLY improved and expanded.  Darkall is the fantasy ying to Eve's space yang.

Hmm that's a tough question, playing more than 50+ games this year doesn't help either. I can only narrow it down to three games, fallen earth, EVE and Aion. But i have to say MANY games surprised me this year and it was quite a good year for me personally.

I think Fallen Earth could have been if my pc could of got above 7fps but since it is a pos I guess WoW is my favorite because it runs on my pc.

I've personally played so many games this year. Perfect World, Runes of Magic, WoW, WaR, Age of Conan, Atlantica Online, Rhealm Lords (To name a few). However, my favourite game of 2009 has to be Age of Conan.

Personally, i love the environment, scenery and the combat. It's far more up to date and more tacticall than any mmos ive ever played and the community is a delight to be around.  The way you can look over the seas of Khemi (Desert city) and see countless pyramids, sand dunes and a fantastic ocean is enough to make me enjoy the game thoroughly. However, 2010 seems to be an eventfull year with Guild Wars 2 and Secret Worlds looking hopefull. and perhaps AoC will coem to an end for me some day.

Waiting for the next big thing.

Another year and WoW, EvE and LotrO are still the MMOs to play. Biggest innovation of 2009 was clearly skirmishes in LotrO!

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

    Definitely agree with this sentiment.

As to the op though I would have to say for me it's still LotR.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Gotta go with Warhammer. I Loved the open RVR, and the lore of WAR so far out of the mmos out (besides LOTRO) has got to be my personal favorite. They still have some issues and a lot of bugs but hopefully they will get them fixed soon.

I have to admit that I didn't play alot of MMOs this year.  Mainly because I dont have the spare time atm to deticate 3-5 hours, 4-6 nights a week to play.

With that said - the game I played most was WAR and I still see it as a good games but with alot of flaws.  I really like the graphics and the animations.  And having many diffrent classes to play makes it intresting if you get bored of the same old in the game.

Eve online is still the game that I respect the most of any MMOs out there.  Its a unique game that has so much to offer.

2009 was the first time I loged into WOW and saw the game really getting dated.  When you have played a game like WAR that has so much more to offer in terms of custimisation and unique landscape, cities, towns and buildings - then you really start to realise that MMO genre can offer so much more than what WOW is doing.  Sadly most of the WOW addicts don't log out of the game to look at something diffrent (even dont go out of their houses anymore) so I expect very few of them to realise this.

One game that I would like to mention as a free to play option would be Runes of Magic.  It isn't doing alot of new things - but what its doing is well done considering its a F2P and hopefully that game will continue to grow.

LOTRO and EQ2 are the only two that could hold my attention for long this year. Tried going back to Warhammer  but couldnt get past the first couple of weeks. Thought about trying AOC or DDO again but think about them is all I did. The only new game I found interesting was Aion but CB showed me all I needed to see of that. I agree with Papa, SOM and the skirmishes in LOTRO were the best things launched in 2009.

Played - Age Of Conan, Everquest II, Mabinogi, Tabula Rasa, Star Wars Galaxies, World Of Warcraft

Hard to say one without the whys.

    I tried out this year:

Fallen Earth, Aion, Ryzom, Age of Conan, EVE, still playing CoX sometimes.

    Favorite has been Fallen Earth.

However I have been playing less and less due to one problem - lack of incentive to team or engage in factional warfare. I am one of those people that doesnt see the point in playing a MMO unless there are incentives (not forced mind you) to group. I have not and probably will not unsub for a while since FE has so much potential and the devs have been so responsive so far.

I've been playing Aion a lot more. I recognize that aside from the one aspect above re Fallen Earth, Aion is much less innovative of a game, but it has the tried and true 'class' system that promotes teaming.

I wish I'd heard about Ryzom years ago, the population just seems too low now. Game is pretty amazing.

Eve is too good. Too immersive. It felt like work (if i had a more fun job). If I didn't have such a ridiculous social life, i.e. if I didn't have 2 or 3 parties to go to each weekend I would probably effin love EVE.

Age of Conan - great fighting system, but like FE little incentive to team except on rare missions, also the immense world created such tedious travel. FE is huge, but I never travel without getting into trouble or seeing shiny things to mine/scavenge so I forget about the long treks, and half the time forget where the hell I was going anyway since missions dont matter much except when you are interested in the story.

To me its without a doubt Fallen Earth.

The first day I entered that game I felt for the first time in years that I actually entered a _place_ that was more than just a nice background for a semi-multiplayer bad boring quest game like most MMOs have been lately.

Fallen Earth took the best things from sandbox PvP style games and themeparks and created their own gameworld that is both and neither depending on how you want to play.

Its a game without classes, where you create a character there is yours instead of a pregenerated class, a game that allows you to be stupid or smart and feel the resulst of those. My character is unique and different from any other character in the game and I love that aspect.

All in all I was about to give up on MMOs when fallen earth taught me why I loved them in the beginning. Being in an imaginary world with other persons and experience and explore it.

I didn't enjoy any MMOs in 2009, but the most fun and my favorite would probably be Aion Online which was released September 22, 2009

For me its the evolution of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.  Blizzard keeps progressing their game while others fight tooth and nail to fix ongoing issues with their games.

*edit* I should list what I play off and on:  Currently playing WoW, Warhammer Online, Age of Conan and Lord of the Rings Online (yes, I do subscribe to all of these)

The more I think about it, the more let down I am about Aion.  Being a huge lineage 2 fan, I was hoping NCsoft NA would correct local issues that plagued Lineage 2.  In the end I found nothing changed and that any form of client catering would be coming from Korea and we're just along for the ride.

Right now I have to say Fallen Earth. I played a bunch of MMO's this year, and it wasn't a very good year at all for MMO's.

In 2009 Age of Conan was my favorite MMO.

Darkfall is my favorite this year, with Ryzom a close second. The worst is Champions Online. Huge letdown.

Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
