We can all speculate whether this game will be good or bad, exclusive or a sellout, but I don't care because time will tell and we shouldn't badmouth a pleasant idea for a game until there's REALLY solid ground for skepticism. In my opinion, at least.
When I played Final Fantasy XI I was a male Hume Black Mage in Gustaberg, there was something special about that barren wasteland. Once I got more high-level I became a Dark Knight, Paladin, Bard, among other things and as I got higher level I was constantly helping out lower-level players and impressing them with my higher-level armor and magic/abilities.
I don't know much about FFXIV at all except that it's carrying over a lot of things from FFXI (such as races, monsters, similar classes/jobs) and it's got the powerful composition of Uematsu- I was never a fan of FFVII but Uematsu gave me enough reason to enjoy the OST. Including the fact that it's got a very rich world and looks Ivalice-inspired, I'm looking forward to exploring this world with my friends and meeting new people.
In FFXIV, I plan on taking on a Lalafell Mage and playing with my girlfriend and best friend together, and we're going to have a blast playing it- I have very few doubts that it will be a great game, and even if it screws up in certain ways, there's no way it can be worse than FFXI's many faults and quirks on older technology and worse graphics. Not to mention the music will be better this time around (and it was already perfectly fine!)
My question is- what are you looking forward to in FFXIV? For me, it'll be music, lore, environment, and character customization.

Player interaction. One of the reasons I was able to stick to FFXI for 5+ years was how awesome the community is. Join a nice social LS, take your time exploring with friends, level up at your own pace.
So yeah, I am really hoping they use the same server names. Can't wait to meet up with some old friends on Gilgamesh.
Ah, Gilgamesh... that was my server, too. We had a linkshell, the Clan of Light. The linkshell disbanded when our leader, Shashrio, died of lung cancer. It was a very serious time for everyone.
It's good to meet people that feel genuine about Final Fantasy, Nick- I'm glad that the world doesn't just care about PvP and killing everyone. xD

Also voted player interaction. To date, I would have to side with FFXI being the most impressive, mature and maintained community I've run across. The group-intensive gameplay really did foster solid player interaction.
It also meant me leaving the game once all of my RL pals moved other places, but regrettably so. I fully believe FFXIV will *build on* their current FFXI offering, but offer another onion layer of gameplay that might help retain those who might otherwise be pushed to move elsewhere. (And no, I'm not offering that a huge solo-based focus is the way forward for MMOs- we have enough offerings of this to effectively call it litter).
That is exactly right, and we're not saying NO to save WoW, because it is already a lost cause. We are saying NO to dissuade the next group of greedy suits who decide to emulate Blizzard and Cryptic, etc.
We can prevent some of the future games from spewing this crap, but the sooner we start saying no, the better the results will be.
So - Stand up, pull up your pants, and walk away.

Thats a toughy to chose which one as I think Im really looking forward to all of them. I like FF11 but never really could get into it due to at that time I didnt have much time to invest into an mmo and later on just got caught up in other mmos. Square has always done a fantastic job in its games of bringing together sound, story, acting and game play and forming one great experience. While there are some Final Fantasy games here and there I did not like as much, they have always been a source of great fun. I am really looking forward to this one, and will have to think on which option Im looking for the most.

I think I'm going to play FFXIV because it's a new change from FFXI. I LOVED FFXI alot, but after playing for so long, quit. It's not that I hated it, it's just that I didn't get that same feeling as when I started. I'm hoping that FFXIV will give me that same feeling. There's not really one part that I'm really looking forward to. I'm looking forward to EVERY part of the game. I really hope the game turns out good.
I choose player interaction, because a bunch of my rl buddies are talking about getting it, so i'll likely have fun playing with my friends, which I think is the main reason I can't get into ant MMOs at the moment.

What i'm looking forward to is the fresh start most of all, not to mention it will be a fresh start with the tight-knit linkshell of about 6 people that have played together since the FFXI release.
I'm looking forward to the crafting and character development as well .
Over say... the past 2 years I have been really burnt out on every MMO I enjoy and FFXIV is just something I really need in my gaming entertainment to get me out of the rut.
I voted environment, but I also agree with you all that player interaction is very important. I'n FFXI I was in a linkshell that was awesome, and I also met a lot of friendly japanese players.
I usually like to start a new game off by myself for a few levels before I start grouping, but there will be so much story and final fantasy goodness, that it won't bother me. As soon as I get a grip on the gameplay, I'll want to group up as much as possible or just progress my character whichever way is best. Most of all I just want to enjoy the game. I will wish I had more time to play, but I will play whenever I can. I hope to join a guild/linkshell etc and enjoy the game.
I love Final Fantasy, I love mmorpg's, this should be heaven.
Yeah, I hear you guys. I'm the guy that hyped up Age of Conan, Warhammer and Aion hoping they'd be MMOs that captured my heart (Aion came close, but no cigar, especially since it had this strange vibe that let you know it didn't have much depth or uniqueness) and I need a new, special, adventurous MMO like FFXIV to lift my spirits and get me back into the mood of not working out and developing a hermit lifestyle.

I honestly can't wait for FFXIV..... I've played every other Final Fantasy (minus crisis core and FFXIII), and love the series.... My favourite is VIII(8)
I most look forward to see how the Combat system will be compared to FF XI...... I loved XI, but always thought combat could be a bit better......
I also look forwards to the return of Nobuo Uematsu on the music score..... No doubt one of the best game music composers of all time.
i cant wait for ffxiv! as a fan of ffxi, which consumed my life for 4 years, i dont recall ever being so eagerly anticipating a new challenge. since leaving ffxi, i have played war, eve, wow and aion hoping to recapture my ffxi experience but unfortunately none of them have come close.
i would most definately say that community above all is what i am most looking forward to. ffxi in my opinion was leagues ahead of any other game in respect to this.
the fact that in order to progress, we was forced to group and obtaining items were so difficult - most people created a stronger bond to a single character rather than losing their unique identity to multiple ones.
everyone had to display a certain degree of manners and intelligence in order to be invited to party which ultimately created a pleasant and unified community. that above all is what i am most looking forward to in ffxiv - a proper alter ego, not just another fictional character.
I think one thing that FFXI really did hands down better than any MMO I ever played was create a real sense of companionship and adventure. Playing it was like stepping into another world. The immersion from the airships and boats having travel times, the large cities, the deep story, and the danger of stepping out into the world made it something really special.
I really imagine getting that real sense of adventure, companionship, and achievement again that no other game has come close to since.
What you described there is what is missing and was taken away from eq1, now everything is quick fast and no risk.
Every kid on the block has 3+ end game chars with the gear to match.
What I was wondering is if FFxi still has the features you mentioned or have they flicked the "easymode" button to?
As for FFiX, I'll try it, but if it starts to smell like the easymode stuff you see these days, well I'll be bored within a few months.
