hi there
I am looking to purchase this game in a few days and Have done alot of research into the game over the past few months, but I can't seem to find any solid info. Most of it is very vague.
Firstly I am curious how the combat system is, the videos on youtube show the gameplay and it seems kinda clunky. But I can't make a solid judgment on it, because I've never played the game before, but I am wondering is the gameplay good? I used to play Shadowbane back in the day, and I loved it because it was a ruthless game, but it also had a good gameplay/combat system. It really was not clunky at all. It was nice and smooth
So I am looking to come into darkfall to get owned in pvp, enjoy it, and most of all to see what darkfall online is like.
Cheers

Well, what can I say... You need to try it. No one could say it will suit your needs. No auto-aim and friendly fire really change mechanics. For me it's blast and will never again play in games without it. But I can't say you will like it or not.
People's opinions vary so much that it is difficult to get the full grasp of what Darkfall is about without playing it yourself.
If you do buy it, look into the clan NEW, it is a clan that will let you join for 30 days and help teach you the ropes, <or so it is said>.
I personally think the pvp melee combat is rather clunky. Many people just hold the sprint button and run around like a chicken with their head cut off swinging their <insert 2 handed weapon here>.
Fighting mobs on the other hand is an absolute blast. I love everything about the PvE fighting, it is definetly a challenge to fight the mobs and gives you a sense of "fear" because if you die you could possibly lose all your stuff. <If someone comes and loots you while your running back>
The archey and magic is cool, you have to manually aim/shoot and judge people's movement, but then again, people will hold sprint and run around like a chicken with their head cut off to make them hard to hit. Also, some magic is rather over powered, <AOEs> but they have recently patched it to make it have a longer "cooldown."
Gankers are everywhere, you will die and lose everything, many many many times. You will have to "grind" your skills so to speak, especially gathering. Mobs are rather difficult, they too will run around like chickens with their heads cut off at times, or run from you if you are chasing them.
The game is decent, but the melee pvp combat really turns me off, alongside the community which is full of many assholes, but you will find friendly people every now and then. If you don't have a clan, then basically you aren't having fun, unless you are a veteran with decently high skills that can hold their own by themselves.
Definetly don't buy into "skill based". Sure you have to get used to how the game controls/plays, but a 2 month old character will probably beat any new character hands down. Same with any other older characters, you really just have no chance. Weapons and armor DO matter, and skills matter even more.
I enjoyed the game a lot for the first 2-3 weeks, but found myself logging in less and less as time went on. I subbed a 2nd month and am having a difficult time staying logged in for more than an hour.
But every person is different, so my opinion is just based on my experience. But like I said, you almost just have to play it for yourself and make a call. The game is decent as said before, but there is just something about the Melee PvP that really turns me off.
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.
I have not played Shadowbane, so i can not accurately speak to that comparison. I did recently purchase DFO tho, after giving up on locating a trial, and i am pleasently surprised. i won't get into much more detail about my opinions becuase i will just be flaimed for 'em. anyway, regarding combat specifically, if i had to make a comparison, i would say it is equivalent to DDO. in other words, when in combat mode (there are different view modes) you have a 3rd person view and when you left click the 'ol mouse you swing your sword/melee and if a target is in reach contact will be made. for archery or magic, you are put in 1st person view and what ever is in your crosshairs is hit. i am sure i am over simplifying it a bit, but suffice it to say, combat in DFO is basically a fps type model.
"Want to Puchase Darkfall, but I am not shure." Yeah, you'll fit right in.
I like the combat and it honestly is not "clunky" at all, the only thing really clunky in DFO would be the UI but you get use to that within a few hours. After playing over a month I actually like the UI in the game now. Gameplay PVE wise is a blast, smartest AI on any MMO I have seen so far to be honest. PVP is great to, though I don't have to much experience with it. The only experience I have in PVP at the moment is getting ganked(which really isn't all that often maybe one time every day).
I did have one fun fight though while defending our alliance city, around 12 reds tried to raid it(raids are different than a siege, they just come in groups to scale the walls and kill players for loot). We had about 20 defending on the walls and cannons shooting as they ran across the bridge, they made it inside and killed a few of us. We managed to fend them off and get 2, I was actually able to help and do some damage that fight(I have archery and masteries for archery high, about my only combat skill right now).

Hey there
thanks for the reply guys, and thanks for not flaming me. It seems every post on this website turns into a bunch of spastic mongoloids freaking out over what games they like, and don't like.
I was just curious to what the game is like, because I've wasted money on alot of MMO's in the past and wanted your guys opinions on the currenty dark fall, because your actually the ones playing it. I will probably come and check it out soon. Thanks again for taking the time to explain some of the features you like and don't like. I really appreciate it
PS: I am most curious about one more question I had though, and that would be. Can I make an assassin type class character in the game? I always like the play the rogue, or assassin, and if so do the assassins, or rogue wear leather or chainmail?
thanks again

Well if you think assassin type with daggers, leather and stealth I am afraid you won't pull it out. Stealth depends from you and how you use terrain ( there is no magical stealth like in WoW ), but you won't stun and take down somebody in few seconds.
With high enough skills, good weapons ( 2 handers, forget about daggers ) and choosing right targets you can take people out really fast especially in melee from behind.

Daggers actually are pretty decent since the patch, they out DPS 2h's easily however getting that close to a target is often hard. But no there isn't really a "stealth" skill or anything, the closest you will get is crouch walking and hiding behind tree's, rock's, etc till someone runs by then running up with daggers(or your weapon) and hitting them unsuspectingly.

I heard that as well that they buffed their damage and range, but right now you lose your target in melee range really fast. It is really hard to predict movement of another player when he sprints around without any penalty to speed while turning and jumping around. That's why melee combat feels disconnected, even with added lately double tap dodge. That's why the most popular choice of melee weapons is polearms and great swords followed by great axes, weapons with the biggest damage per hit, the widest swing arcs and the longest reach.
Most of melee fights are part of usual Darkfall mixture: you fight most of the time in range with a bow or magic an if it happens that you end in melee range, you run in try to score a hit while in the same time trying to avoid your enemy swing and run out to continue range fighting.
The movement mechanics, to wide swing arcs of some weapons and limited options in melee don't make it really popular between tweachers.
If you want to grind infinitly, DF is for you

Darkfall isn't the best MMORPG ever made, but it's the best on the market atm. If you're going to play it, bring a couple friends and join/make a guild and you'll have a blast.. but don't try and play by yourself.
Currently playing - FF14ARR
Previous games - SWG, World of Warcraft, ShadowBane, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall, Planetside Asheron's Call, Everquest, Everquest 2, Too many.
The combat vids do look clunky due to turning everything down for FRAPS, although I think it's still a testament to good programing by AV that I can still be in large group combat and FRAPS it and fight at the same time. Just you're not gonna get a great vid, I'm running a Phenom II X3 720 BE and HD 5770 with 4 GB of DDR3. It's like on all FPS though, everyone turns down the graphics to get that edge unless you've got a i7 965 etreme and a 5970 on steriods!
I played SB and DFO is very similar and AV have based much on that game among others, imagine Shadowbane 3.0 on steriods with twitch combat and no classes or shitty stealth abilities. Then you'll begin to get an idea of DFO, but hey you'll be playing it by now anyway so if you're on EU-1 send me a pm if you're interested in joining a guild.
