FFXI blacks out after 2min-5hrs.

I log in and after 2 minutes - 5 hours into playing the screen goes black and the music skips endlessly. I have to turn my comp off with the power button.

I have a radeon 9550 agp 256 mb card running on a compaq 2.8 mhz 1gig memory and 350 watt power supply. I also have updated all my drivers even the ones for my mother board chipset.

Any help would be nice thank you for reading.

im not sure why this happens, but it happens to me too once in a while on my ps2. but i can play longer than 5 hours and it only happens like once every 2 weeks. u should consider asking the people who work  for playonline or square.

Well your using a comaq... and store bought PC is shit..., the only way to ensure you get quality stuff is to build it yourself. But ur spec looks okay.. although ATi cards are great hardware there softwear is shit, so they don't run properly.

Have you tryed going into your bios and turning 8xAGP down to 4xAGP?

If that doesn't work contact POL and see what they say

Was that a thought I just had, or and echo of a thought I was thinking of having?

Nvidia cards are the best for FFXI. You should try getting one. There software has always been top notch. I trust Nvidia's video cards more then ATI cards.

Couple of ideas to help, and they are a mix of ideas

    1. Build your own computer | It may not be as cheap as buying a computer at the store or what not, but in the long run, it will be cheaper beacuse if you use it for one or two things such as gaming and work, then you do not have to update it as often as premade computers.  Another problem with this is that not all the parts may be under warrenty, but the those that are (Hard drive, CD-RW Drive) are under warrenty MUCH longer than those from premade computers.
    2. Try Patches | Patches usally help with most of the problems that occur with a game or any other program.  Sometimes it is the cheapest and simplest way to solve a problem.
    3. RAM (Random Access Memory) | Sometimes games, mouse movement, key strokes, music, and graphics take up to much RAM, and would cause the computer to shut itslef down as a result.  It is best to log out of all other programs (AIM, Window Media Player, etc.) in before playing games such as FFXI.
    4. Mods | Modifing a game may seem like fun (having the same equipment, but different color than everyone else), but there could be consiquences, such as a re-writing of the programming or lost of saved data.  It is possible once you mod a game, your Spybot/Adware or Virus Scan may see it as a corupt file and delete it.  So avoid Moding for games that go online.
    5. Don't Play So Long | Maybe "crashing" is the computers way of saying to take a break from gaming and go outside and play.

Hope that was helpful, even though it was so long.  Sorry about that.

It happens to me on the PS2, but thats because i am using a router and some one else is using the computer to listen to music online, so it slows down the PS2.

Look for a section in your BIOS settings for frequency and/or voltage controls. Change the dram frequency ratio to 1:1. 1:1 may not be a choice. In that case, look for 100%. Change that setting and you should be good.
