ok so im looking for a new mmo. i have played wow, and love it just got bored with the fact that end game is group only.  my favorite part of the game was the crafting. and not just that but the profession system as well. what i mean is i like having different professions available to me, whether directly or indirectly from other players. i love farming for materials, be it from monsters or the open world.  but i love the end result the most. crafting normal items to work your way up to epic gear is an awesome feeling. and the fact that i can keep it or sell it to another player, even better.  the games i have played and like are wow, dungeon runners, runes of magic, maplestory,  and atlantica, which i havent reached the crafting portion yet.  the games i played but didnt really get into were perfect world, cabal online, last chaos, and ddo.  my comp can run wow at medium settings but couldnt run LOTRO at low settings, if that helps.  i dont really care how the game plays. if it's like wow, cool, or maplestory or mythwar.  thanks

i forgot to add that id really prefer free to play games unless ATITD truly justifies the cost and has a trial. and i couldnt even get fallen earth to work

if you really like that kind of thing, Runescape lets you craft lots of stuff.  www.runescape.com

basic items for free accounts are bronze items, upto rune items, though there are lots of other skills for crafting, several require subscription to access.  no big deal.  if its something you may like, give it a try.

ATITD has a trial that allows you to log 24 hours of playtime before you have to pay or even enter personal info at all. I think it justifies the cost, but it can be time consuming.

Oh and by now I'm sure you have your own opinion of Runescape. I don't know why anyone would suggest it. No one has in ages.

Oh and there's always Luminary, which I'm personally pretty fond of.

Ryzom crafting/ gathering s best on market imho. EVE online have best economy so everything you will craft people would buy - not present in any other game.

FE crafting is also fun but economy is just terrible. No item decay means no one will buy your stuff.

ATITD is also good crafting only game but be prepared to completely different game mechanics (no PvE/PvP at all)

Sadly I don't know any f2p with decent crafting and tried many of them.

i looked at ATITD and the style and fact that pve/pvp is basically nonexistent does not intrigue me. and even though im new to the rts style view im downloading Luminary right now because it honestly sounds like exactly what im looking for.

  • johnmatthaisjohnmatthais Member CommonPosts: 2,663

Luminary is an awesome game. It just wasn't meant for the people it was released to, imo. Also, each server has a bad economy and the GoonZus aren't really all that great. Hopefully that'll change with the new elections.

Craft is not fun unless you do it in a harsh world.  My guild had a dedicated crafter pay us 10,000 gold to escort them from one city to another so they could use our dock to make a boat.  Everyone in Darkfall can take crafting skills but only a dedicated crafter can excel in crafting.  You would have to find a clan/guild to join as well as the hardest ores to get in the game take a group effort.  Guilds only give this materials to dedicated crafters who have proven themselves.  The ultimate player content.

For god's sake, for the last time, Darkfall is not a crafter's game. It's a PvPer's game only right now, and a pretty shoddy one at that.

Not to mention, no free trial.

No it isn't, which makes being a crafter a unique thing.

Vanguards crafting is actually one of the best, but if you only can run Wow on medium you will have some problem with it. Still, the trial is free so you can always try it.

Otherwise I think Ryzom is the best choice.

Darkfalls crafting is still at the moment very basic, Mortal Online have a much more advanced version of crafting.

Unfortunately does it seems to me that the F2P MMOs have spent very little work on crafting and few if any have a good system.

I personally think that crafting is one of the worse aspects of MMOs today, it is very popular but still have most games just a very basic system and even the ones with the best system leaves a lot more to wish for.

People should have the ability to design their own items, to train animals with the skills they choose (for riding, pack animals and pets), to themselves grow herbs in the gardens of their guildhouse or home, and to use really rare components to create rare items. Guilds should be able to run mines and farms as well as their own markets and shops.

Since a large part of most games communities love crafting I believe that any game with a great crafting system will get a lot of players. But I played a lot of MMOs and Vanguard is still the best out there craftingwise, and while better than the rest it is still rather basic.

Horizons now called Isitaria has arguably the best crafting in any MMO while one of the worst adventuring.  Crafting in Horizons takes time and work and is needed.  I believe you can play the game for free now if you do not play as a dragon.  It was released a year or so before WoW so I would think you could run it.  Given your system limitations it might be the best game for you.

I think a lot of people are in the same place as you right now. But honestly, i doubt you'll be able to go from such a polished game like WoW to an f2p mmo and deem it worthy. I've tried a bunch of f2p mmos and they're all pretty terrible or they are very cash stop heavy.

With that being said Allods online is getting a lot of buzz. I beta tested it to level 10 it was ok, I can't give a full review on that game but it probably has the greatest potential for f2p games.

Final Fantasy XI has the most complex crafting system with 9 Professions and 7 Harvesting activities. Each has 100 Levels and crafted items are better than drops in many cases and some items can only be made by crafting and getting drops (rare materials). One Character can have 1 Crafting skill at 100 and the rest at 60. Fishing can be 100 independently of the other crafts. The crafting system is very complex with many sub materials and a maximum of 3 High Quality result tiers.

    Crafts

    Alchemy

    Bonecraft

    Clothcraft

    Cooking

    Fishing

    Goldsmithing

    Smithing

    Woodworking

    Synergy

    Hobbies

    Chocobo Digging

    Clamming

    Excavation

    Gardening

    Harvesting

    Logging

    Mining

Ryzom also has a very nice crafting and harvesting system.

hmm Fallen Earth is a good crafter game, mainly because it just feels like you should in that type of world.

as for me the best crafting in a game was Vanguard, it was interactive kinda like a mini game and the better you was at it the better the items turned out. unlike wow where you just click and craft(boring imo,but that is how must games are).and there was different styles or armor depending on where you got the recipe.  Vanguard was amazing for gathering as well, like lumberjacking you actually went up to what looked like a normal in game tree, chopped it down then gathered lumber from the tree on the gorund. build a house, make furniture for in it, and its a real house not an instanced building. but i hear the game is dying, and soe isn't doing much new with it anymore. but there is enough existing content to keep you buisy a long time. the classes are great in the game probably the most unique classes of any game i ever played. even if you make one of the classes you've seen in a million other games but it will have its own unique features.

but i'm not sure your computer could handle vanguard but they do have a free trial.

eq2 also had a fun interactive crafting system, but both Vanguard and EQ2 are SoE games and i won't play SoE games anymore but those 2 games are the best for crafter players. I'm not one of those SWG vets but because they are RMT in every game they own now, i will never play another one of their games. But just because they're not for me doesn't mean some one else won't enjoy them.

i honestly can't think of a F2P with decent crafting, some don't have a real crafting system at all and teh rest felt 1/2 assed and tacked on.

well, i appreciate all the posts and i dont want to leave anything behind and not give somethin a try but i d/l fallen earth and it took 3 days to install and update and then i found out it wouldnt even run. i tried eq2 up to about 18 and got really bored with the dull colors and the gameplay was fun but i still couldnt figure out how to craft.  there was no decent tutorial or helpful players to get me started. and when FFXI came out i saved up for the ps2 version, decided i didnt want to spend the money, and instead got the Vana'diel Collection.  after the 2nd worst install, FE being the worst, it took me forever to update and create an account. oh and not to mention that even after i cancelled my account the proper way, i was stll getting billed the 12.50 from Playonline/SOE for 6 months. im not trying that again.  i realize this kind of game was a lot to ask for and i really appreciate the responses.  i guess it is hard to pay for WOW for 2 years and want something similar f2p. i just really need to scratch that itch. even if it is in an offline game. i just really like nonstop looting(diable sucks imo) and then selling the stuff or making new stuff out of it. i'm kinda surprised no one has said anything about Runes of magic. i tried that and the crafting system was a bit of a grind, but really fun. the tier system was what turned me away. i hate having to choose between 1 or 2 professions when there are around 10.  it forces me to interact with everybody when i prefer to fly solo.  so right now i'm trying Luminary, ROM, Atlantica and i may try the 2 month pack for EQ2. thanks everyone

Nnnaaahh. I wouldn't recommend this one.

When Final Fantasy XIV comes out tho... I'd recommend that one. Half a year+- You can register to the beta right now.

Try Mortal Online. The crafting is very deep where you have different kinds of the same material like 15 different types of wood. Then when you make it you choose what material to use on what part of the weapon and how much of it.

So you could make a bow. First you choose what type so say you choose shortbow. Then you can either make the whole bow out of a single material or use more than 1. Then you choose how much and the types of wood you have. To get the wood you will have to go find that type of tree and cut it yourself unless you find a wood vendor to buy from. And it just goes on and on in how deep it is.

After all of that your bow might work like crap so you experiment with different combinations for a bow that works better than the last one you picked.

Best crafting of any game ever was SWG, there is no denying it. The graphics are not highly demanding and you can either play SWGEmu for the classic game or play SWG NGE, which is much crappier, and suffer through a $15/mo charge. But for someone who loves crafting it is a game you can focus purely on crafting, no combat is needed. Most crafting items are always highly in use for combat players. I would suggest this over any other game if you love crafting since it is in fact the most in depth.

I am afraid you are going to waste your time and if you are stupid enough, a lot of money to do crafting in highly cash shop dependent games such as Luminary and Atlantica. RoM is still new so it is still ok but look for it to go downhill next year.

You have crap drop rate of crafting materials at high level and no matter what you craft you always come up with products you can only sell for a portion of your cost. Since you will never find enough materials for your higher level crafting you have no choice but to spend a lot in the cash shop.

If crafting is my main interest in an mmorpg, I will definitely avoid anything with a cash shop.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the EMU have such a small population that it's a wasted effort?

Fallen Earth. I've never played an MMO where crafting is more central to the game experience.

In terms of a crafting minigame it's non existant, if that's your bag Vanguard has to be the most fun I've played

WURM online is very heavy crafting, check that out.

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!
