Lol, I am so sure the reason for sci-fi to win over fantasy is the newest bandwagon that is "there are too many fantasy MMO's around these days, I want somethin "new" and refreshing~". If it wasn't for that the poll would be in fantasy's favor by far.
Dude, that's a full of crap assumption. If it were really that way, then "real life" would also have a major lead in the poll.
I don't see anyone praising 7 Million or The Agency now do I?

It's not crap because the post right below him said that the fantasy setting is so overdone that s/he cant stand to play another one right now.
I choose fantasy but SWG was a great game and it was one of the best games I ever played. The way the classes worked with the tiers and you could spread your points out, it was amazing. The game never felt like a grind when I WAS grinding, that how you know its a superb game. Also the houses and resources were great. But anywho, Fantasy normally holds my interest.
To comment on the other posts about how Fantasy is limited, its not. If you look at Fantasy MMO's most have spiders, dragons, bandits and wolves but each one still has its own unique twist to these monsters AND their own created monsters like Ring-Wraiths in Lord of the Rings or Ukuns in Everquest. Fantasy is only as limited as a dev teams creativity.

Reality is boring. I might even dare to say that "reality" has been overdone, if not in games, then in real life, lol. No wonder sci-fi and fantasy would hold the candle over it.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Well, separating the two is futile-seeing that Science Fiction is also fantasy. There should be more...complex sub-categories in order for, me at least, to answer the O.P.'s question.
i like fantasy but its been done to death, i've been finding myself looking forward to scifi games more and more. but i did LOVE the PSO settings where its sci fi but with fantasy elements. i liked that it had space ships and lazer guns but still had magic and what looked like elves , beastmen and also had cyborgs as a playable race. i just wish it was an open world.
voted fantasy tho, might be bored with it atm but i do like it.
I can go for either, more about the individual game and storyline rather than the genre for me.
One thing though that I do like to see in the storyline is something that sets a player character (or other important characters) apart from the average npc characters.
Good example is in eve where the players sit in a gooey egg that makes them extra powerful or in tabula rasa where they had some sort of genetic gift that gave them super powers.
The idea that the only difference between a player and a npc is that we figured out how to level up and unexplained respawn ability is something that really annoys me about a game.
I think fantasy allows for a better more mysterious and interesting world than sci-fi. I prefer fantasy a little bit more than sci-fi, but I don't let that be a deciding factor in playing a game, I let the game mechanics decide for me.
Sci-Fi beats Fantasy, unless the game happens to be an RPG. 95% of the time you'll still have swordsmen wielding swords made out of inferior metals against space orcs or space goblins.
This is a hard choice... I love fantasy based games, when done correctly I love the settings and music that comes from it. However until a AAA title can do what Darkfall does in terms of control over a sword and FPS type shooting I think I need to pass in favor of the much easier to get done Sci-Fi experience.
I believe Sci-fi is easier to get done in the sense there is so much out there to explore in terms of ideas and creativity. While fantasy games are limited to land masses a good Sci-Fi MMORPG that uses both planet land mass and outer space could infinitely grow like EVE has done... why? because space is endless.
So really I am waiting for a space age MMO that uses both planets and space. Has FPS type combat yet also has other elements so that combat isn't the only focus worth exploring. Something like a mix of Darkfall/MO but in space.
Generally I'll play any game thats engaging and has a decent plot / backstory that can involve me. Fantasy or Sci Fi.
The people saying Fantasy is limited though are the ones who are limited .. by thier own imaginations. Just because Fantasy games seem to follow a general trend atm does not mean that the scope of Fantasy games is limited.
One poster cited that Fantasy games were limited because they were limited to a "land mass" while Sci Fi games could expand into space, what tripe. I guess you never played old school AD&D (2nd edition rules I'm thinking of) that had the Planescape setting. The multiverse etc, different planes of existance. Some games have touched on this (EQ - planes of hate, fear, power etc) so to say that a Fantasy game is limited to a "land mass" is utter rubbish.
Fantasy games are limited only by the designers imagination. There are hundrads of "fantasy" books and settings out there that dont include "orcs and trolls etc", just because games designers have so far been afraid to move away from the current mold does not mean the genre is "limited".
Thats the great thing about both settings, Fantasy and Sci Fi, you can do what you want in either setting. The ONLY limitation is your imagination. Fantasy can be explained away with "magic" and Sci Fi can be explained away with "technology". Bringing to two together just gives you even more excuses to let your imagination run wild ... anything you can dream up can be rationalized in those settings.
Its my hope to one day see a really original IP come from an MMO, the game company thats willing to invest in top quality writers and work together on a new custom-made-for-the-game IP rather than try to bend an IP to a game will be pure win.
Really, I see very little difference in the two genre's. Game mechanics usually allow for the same thing to happen, the only difference is which sprite you display to have the effect.
Star wars has magic, it's the force (though it is very limited). Star trek has "space elf's" in Vulcans.
How do you want to do damage? Nuke with a dot. OK, warlock immolate or troopers sticky grenade. Ranged damage, ok so arrows, guns or zomglazers, even some games let you used 2 of the 3.
If you want to travel to a different world your talking about portals vs space ships. There may be a difference in how the game shows that movement, but you essentially still get to your ice themed place, Hoth vs northrend.
I am definitely a bigger fan of the sci-fi genre. I have tried my hand at some fantasy games and they didn't appeal to me. I have been playing my sci-fi game for months now and I really enjoy it.
To be honest, I'm a bit sick of fantasy at the moment. I was really into fantasy as a teenager and the games I tend to play the most are still fantasy based, so yes, I think I sometimes live too much in a fantasy world. That's why I voted for science fiction, it's something new to me, and I've only recently gotten into it again (I used to be obsessed with Star Wars as a child and now that obsession seems to be recurring, especially after I heard about SWTOR). So yes, at this point in time, my preference is science fiction.
I also do not agree that fantasy is limited in any way. Like science fiction, limitations are only due to ones imagination and there are so many new concepts that one could come up with to redefine both genres.
I don't really mind the setting as long as the gameplay keeps me satisfied, though in all honesty I am getting tired of the generic high fantasy route most games seem to take. Elves and the stock "short" race coupled with some sort of cataclysmic global evil trying to take over the world and I'm the only one that can stop it yadda yadda.

Final Fantasy 7
There's more then enough "reality" to go around, there is not, however, nearly as enough creativity...
Fantasy AND Sci-fi both all the way!
- Shijeer
Sci-fi. I hate fantasy with a passion, I won't play it most of the time and when I do, I take the least magical-type role I can.
Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
Now Playing: None
Hope: None

I'm not sure which to vote for, but I do know that this thread will once and for all put this question to rest.
Nice, a little bit of necromancy. I vote dark fantasy or low fantasy.

Sci-fi for sure.
But I would also like to see a really high quality historically based MMO come out and succeed.
I Like both, I would love a good sci-fi mmorpg pleasee!

Main characters:
Jinn Gone Quiet (Guild Wars)
Princess Pudding (Guild Wars)
I like both equally, although some of my favorite games of all time mix them into the same setting. Such as Arcanum.
I like both, and would enjoy a game that has both.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
Sci-Fi. i was already bored of the "swords and sorcery" theme in the 80s
I choose Fantasy because most of the sci-fi rpg style games just suck. For FPS I go with Sci-Fi over Oblivion style fantasy combat control.
