i think what happened was due to the popularity of the Druid (particularly in WoW) it replaced the Bard as the hybrid melee, healer, spellcaster style of class. With the changing playerbase and evolution of MMO's we are bound to see many more classes come and go or change name. The principal is still there though.

-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
To me a old bard from EQ1 I tryed a dirge out in eq2 for upto lvl 53 was my main when I started playing it they were just too dull and not to good to solo with but they are always wanted in groups and raids in eq2.

EQ2 bards were a huge dissapointment for me. The bard side of things is extremely passive. You are essentially a subpar DPS buffbot.

Got a new sub on vanguard now..going to make a bard tired of my lvl 48 sorcerer,want to raid with him but takes so long time to get the armor.
I might add that FFXI Bards are a powerful support class and always in high demand.
