The new patch should expand crafting a bit, so hopefully that will be a good thing to do from here on out. Other than that, you can kill monsters and PvP with one another. The guild system is there but with the horrible targetting system that MO uses, you can easily start killing your teammates as many people report doing. I'm still of the opinion that their PvP system is rather bad, but your mileage may vary.
If you are looking for a full featured game with a lot of "things to do" I think MO is a ways off from that yet. There should be an open beta fairly soon though, so keep an eye out for that and see if it tickles your fancy.
It's a sandbox, you do whatever the hell you want to do.
As long as it's supported by the game. This idea of "sandbox" is wonderful, but there are still heavy limitations on what you can, and can't do. UO in that respect, was an amazing sandbox because there was so many varieties on what you could do. MO gives you a few options, and hopefully with the skill system will show a bit more depth but it's not close to what UO offered yet.
New patch is out, by the looks of it, people will have to have others get the resources for them. You won't be able to make both armor and weapons either, or at least a good variety. You could always just focus on a few swords and a few types of armor.
It looks as though the best thing you can do is download the torrent for the game, then go and play another game. They pushed the latest patch a day before the team went on xmas break, and the patch borked the server. Its been down for a couple of days and likely won't be operational until January.
Beyond that, from reading the forums it sounds as though the game still doesn't really have any gameplay to speak of besides crafting and being ganked by existing players.

What he means is you can do NOTHING. You can harvest, run around the world and die, go out and hit someone, hell you can build a house if you have nothing better to do with the next month of you life.
People that keep compairing MO and DF really should stop! I beta both and MO is way more crappy at the moment than DF was in beta. I am not saying it is not going to get better, just saying it can not be comairped to DF because one actually had something to do even in beta and the other has nothing at all to do. You can choose which is which.

idk if you can compare DF and MO even if you assume the best conditions, for what i know, DF is much more PvP oriented... and yes prolly MO lauch will be crappy, but I honestly think that anyone expecting a flawless release these days is fooling themselves...
When it goes to sandbox, it is easier to say what is impossible to do. Flying in any way isn't possible. Grouping too, but this option is going to be in before releasing. Thus now it prohibits players from taking actions in groups. From techie things, droping items from inventory isn't possible, so setting traps using this options isn't possible.
I could go on, but listing both things which can be done, along with impossible ones would take too much time. Only player's lack of imagination sets the barriers. Of course taking into consideration gameplay mechanics.

Maybe in a year, if it's still around.

Sandbox by definition is lots of sand throwing, kicking each others sand castles over and crying/threatening with mom

Remember, your advantage lies in your opponent's weakness (J)
You can ride a horse and tame animals
you can stab people
you can steal from people
you can craft...stuff.
you can build a house
and uh... That's just about it. None if this is actually fun, though.
