Where did they go?
I'm not talking about the reputation grind faction systems, I'm talking about the old school, Friendly/Neutral/Aggresive faction systems. It was a really simple thing, but for some reason it seems that the newer MMOs have ditched the idea. Are there any MMOs out now that actually have a faction system?

EQ2 uses that system. Here you can also change between the factions, even if it is a some work.
Aion has a similar system with 2 player faction and and a third npc faction.
By some odd reason have Mythic turned the Warhammer universe into 2 factions (against the lore).
Hey Tatum!
EVE Online was this if you participate in Alliance warfare. Hostiles that you are in war with we used to color red and depict with a dash. Players that were neutral were colored gray/white to us.
In EVE some Alliances have a no-shoot-neutral policy (like Providence). But mine was NBSI (not blue shoot it)
Not trying to sell you on EVE ofc, just explaining it has this but it's all player run essentially.
I did see some offshoot MMOs that had this concept though. It was a space MMO but the name of it escapes me atm

WoW doesn't really have the same system though. In EQ you could faction in endgame PVE zones and talk to vendors / do quests etc. in zones people would normally raid.
In WoW all of the endgame instances are hostile
i think eq killed that...too many paladins flushed freeport factions horribly then found out they couldn't get thier epics :P
Vanguard also has this if my memory serves me.. Pretty sure I had to farm standing on my orc to be able to use the bank and vendors in the big desert city.
Also there are also NPC faction standings in EVE.. first of all you gotta grind them to get access to better missions and that in turn lowers your standing with their enemies.. Even to the point where their navies will open fire on you. I can only guess that Patchday spent little time running missions since he forgot to mention this.
I like the idea of faction grinding since it often makes for multiple paths to play the game while still allowing you to power through and play the path you want. It offers some resistance so not everyone will bother going the same path. While it does allow players to break off from the beaten path to experience the game in a new way.. I knew a Dark Elf in EQ that wasnt allowed inside the Dark Elf City cause he had messed up his standings doing something that seemed like a good idea at the time. But that just made the game more interesting and also allowed for a bit of roleplaying.
When I played wow I can't remember one person complaining that there were two differnt factions. Not sure if it is a new thing or you have a different source for coming up with that complaint.
Check out face of mankind.
I didnt mention it because grinding missions is a grind in EVE. Granted, ratting in nullsec wasn't much better but at least I could quickly dock and jump into a pvp ship when hostiles came into the systems
Additionally, I didnt think the NPC factions was something the OP was interested in. We're not talking bout 'grinding' faction. We're talking bout hostile (red) / friend (blue) / neutral standings which is quite common to PVP.
quoting the OP for clarity for folks
This is like the 30th "Why don't games do x anymore?" thread, where x is a Darkfall feature.
If I was more conspiracy-theory-inclined, I'd be going bonkers over it

I've yet to see a FFA PvP game that looks interesting to me. So no, I'm not looking for Darkfall.
I never played EQ, but yes, this is more or less what I'm talking about. Just don't understand why this feature was cut from most of these games, especially since they're so tilted towards the PvE end of the spectrum. DAOC had some thing of a faction system, not very complex or in depth, but it made things more interesting.

Tro44, shame on you.
MMOs that seem to have it are:
- RPG Quiz - can you get all 25 right?
- FPS Quiz - how well do you know your shooters?
One serious drawback of something like that is that it fragments the player population even more. If you want to have good standing with one faction, you are cut off from any content that might lower it. If your friends choose to pursue a faction that you are hostile to, you become greatly limited to what you can do together. The more diverse and significant the faction system becomes, the more fragmented the population would get.
True, but nearly every feature divides the playerbase, levels being by far the biggest culprit.
It was the right path .-1 , 0 , +1
its still there, but, you cant make wrong decisions anymore.they wont let you,its nice illusion.
year or so and we have *new* revolutionary -1 0 +1 system
Generation P
Vanguard has an awesome faction system. The only other MMO that comes close to it is EQ1. *edit* forgot about Eve

They REALLY screwed themselves with that launch. Too bad, because there was plenty of market there for that game.
I think what happened is that people lost the drive to care about factions. Nowadays people just play the best class/race and have no faction pride.
Personally I don't like the idea of who I pvp against being pre-determined.
My sig is just as logical as your posts are

Well what sort of faction system are you even going for then? Darkfall with stricter PVP limitations (ie not being able to attack Allies unless it's a Duel?)
