I do believe as a former beta tester for the game that although there has been trolling in this forum, the strong reaction by some in the community has been justified in that it has been a vehement backlash against mediocrity in MMO developement and the percieved presumption that MMO customers will buy anything that goes. Too many MMO's have gone out the door unfinished and bug ridden. Alganon has added to the list, but in many peoples opinion has also commited the sin of not simply trying hard enough to be original. It is strongly precieved to be a WoW clone, not helped by statements from QOL to the effect it is a rival product. Comparisons will obviously be made and Alganon (and QOL did contribute to that effect) falls very short of expectation in many eyes. MMO customers expectations have been raised in recent years. For example there is virtually nothing that Alganon has that WoW (the de facto benchmark for a WoW clone) doesn't already have, but the reverse of Alganon having more than WoW, isn't. **
As previously said, I like others, beta tested the game for over a month, we tried in vain to say to the developers the game was far from ready, was bug ridden, needed more quests with better breadcrumbing, more developement, and even more testing as dungeons and end game content were not available. Even after the delayed release our pleas were ignored. QOL went on to shoot themselves in the foot, and the furore here is only a natural response (if unpleasent reading). QOL lifted the NDA at a time the game was far from ready and announced they were pushing forward with releasing Alganon in around a month. People could now speak freely about Alganon, and they did.
Now over a month has gone by since release and Alganon is little further forward than before. According to their own forums people are still suffering many of the same beta issues as before but with the added confusion of wondering about "the Dawning". Stalwarts are talking about leaving. People are angry about this game in a way they haven't been before. You cannot blame them, no wonder the trolls have been out in force.
This could be a watershed moment for MMOs, and it has nothing to do with the excuse of coming from an independant company with a limited budget. There's nothing wrong with being independant, just make it good, stable, somewhat original and with depth.
** You can cannot compare yourself to times gone when selling unless you are superior, Alganon does fall short.
