lol I don't just look at a game and say "oh that looks bad shitty year coming"  I just dont buy into all the hype.  Not buying into the hype isn't being ignorant it's being sensible.  If you can look at a game past all the hype and say that it looks good then try it and see if it's for you.  I'm not saying that the upcoming games like SW:TOR or STO are gonna be failures.  If I said something like that without atleast giving the game a try then I'd be a major a-hole and should be shot (I'm not found of people bashing something without atleast trying it first).   If it came across that way I appologize.  I am looking forward to trying both out as they both have features that im interested in but, I'm not buying into the "this is gonna be the greatest game ever" or "this game is gonna be the game that kills WoW" hype or any of the hype from the game company itself.  I prefer to hear/see what the game has to offer and then "test drive" it if you will and see if it is something that I'm willing to make an investment into.

My point has nothing to do with hype whatsoever.

Glad to hear you can take a rational approach at the hype though. You still ignored the game I'm talking about though, so my point stands still.

So, their approach is quite different from other developers and if that doesn't give at least some optimism, I don't know what will.

    /agree

still hoping I get into the beta test though >_< Been a while since I actually "tested" a game where the devs "wanted" feedback and help with bugs, and didn't use the word "Beta" in place of "Hype"

If you mean FFXIV  trust me I'm not ignoring it in the slightest lol.  I have already registered to (hopefully) beta test it.  FFXIV is most definately a game that I'm watching closely and I'll admit that I most definately look forward to seeing how it turns out, I am more than happy to say that I'm a FF fanboy. I have enjoyed FF series since its beginnings on the NES lol.

Other than FFXIV and The Old Republic what is there to look forward to in 2010 ?  Blizzard has yet to announce their new mmo, Turbine has yet to announce there new console mmo, DCUO will be niche like Champions Online was and The Agency is a really big wait and see. Perhaps Mortal Online and Earthrise can get people excited about mmos again ?

If your kind was the majority, my point would be invalid.. but as this thread shows, we're in the minority for whatever ignorant reason (aka "Lolz it's Finel Fantsay, JP emo fag MMO Square sux FFVII MMO WheRE??" or "FFXI sucked, this game won't be any different from it and thus will suck just as much").

Aside from SW:TOR and FFXIV I hope to get a chance to test STO and there's a few others that I'm quite interested in testing or hoping allow some form testing like GW2 and The Secret World.  Who knows there might be something that isn't really well known right now that might come out and grab your interest.

@hyanmen I'll agree that if they have an opinon like that then yes they are indeed being ignorant.  People can't always base how one game is off another game just because it's part of the same series or from the same developer.  The FF series is a great example of this imo if you compare all the FF games you'll see that there are multitudes of differences in each one.  Basing ones opinon off of an experience with another game is indeed being ignorant.

I'd go so far as to say that Blizzards Secret MMO weapon will be one directed towards the "sandbox" cheerleaders, and they will love them for it. It makes sense too. Blizzard controls the casual side of things, why make another MMO that would split it's success? They have to be making a new MMO to round up the rest of the crowd...

One Company to rule them all, One Company to find them, One Company to bring them all and in teh interwebz bind them.

From a business standpoint blizz making a "sandbox" game to draw in the multitudes of people that enjoy them would be a well played deal.  Like you said why split your current subscribers when you can reach out into the mmo world and just grab up another group that likes a different style of gaming.  They get to keep their WoW subs, some might switch to the new mmo, and then your getting another large flow of cash from all those who want a sandbox game that is done well.  If there's one thing that can be said about Blizzard it's that when they go to put out a game they do their homework on it and work very hard to put out a well made and polished game.

I truly truly hope that apart from Blizz, other companies can do that. If the market is dominate by 1 company it will always be very bad for the consumers.

Right now i'm looking at GW2 and FF 14 to make the difference. If they really dont than we as players are in deep sheet!!!

I became a pessimist title after title, clone after clone. It's horrible.

The latest clones are Champions and Star Trek Online.

I wonder if Earthrise will be any different.

BUT we know CCP and Blizzard are gonna make 2 ACTUALLY new MMO's. CCP will never do a clone. And Blizzard can't or it will kill WoW.

    So cheer up, boys.

I think pessimistic is too strong of a term.  At this point I'm more cynical than anything.

Who is going to impress me in 2010?  ~yawn~  Not likely to happen.

I"m pessimistic for 2010. People pumped for 2010 are just not familiar with the game developers that's making them.

Star Trek Online - made by Cryptic studios (City of Heroes, Champions Online). So it will be a given PVP will be pure suck. I am 100% sure on that. I hope they prove me wrong. Anything is possible. But I have 0% faith in them and time and time again they have always proved me right bout them. They balance their MMOs horribly. STO fans, get ready for a rushed game that will be followed with a crap ton of nerfs

SW: KOTR - I loved KOTR and still buy the comics based on that time period. I will probably try it out. But I am not expecting anything super awesome. KOTR will follow the golden brick road established by WoW surely. The Classes will feel like straight jackets. They won't be indepth like the Classes in KOTR I'm sure of it

Bioware- they're experts on single player gaming. But this is their undoing as well. They specialize in making games that have an 'End'. And thus, it is simple too me that after one has hit end game they will discover a game that is just like WoW once they've exhausted all the wonderful stories and nice NPC dialogue

I am honstely more hyped for Console / single player RPGs these days. I am pumped for MAss Effect 2 atm much more then any MMO on the horizon. I do look forward to Guild Wars 2 though because they have the budget and manpower. Plus, they have lots of MMO / multiplayer experience

Don't get me wrong I seriously hope that there's other companies out there that can match Blizzard in their game making.  I know that both ArenaNet and Square Enix can both put out very well made and highly polished games, unfortunately the games they release go up against WoW.  If either of them put out a sandbox game with the same quality as their flagships then I think they could become a monster on the "sandbox" scene.  Square Enix I'm sure has the resources to take a shot at it, ArenaNet I'm not sure, but based off their sucess with GW I think if they presented a good looking idea to some investors then they might be able to take a crack at it.  Also lets not forget the current "sandbox" champion EVE and their owners CCP.  CCP has atleast one other game in the works that I know about for sure but not sure if they are planning on going with traditional or "sandbox" style with it.  If Blizzard does release a "sandbox" game then other companies better start trying alot harder or like you said we will be in alot of trouble.  If one company rules the mmo kingdom then it will be us the users than end up suffering in the end.

Not sure when CCP plans to release their DUST MMO. It looked really awesome and all. I love CCP (they made EVE after all).

My only issue with DUST from what I've seen (footage from evefest) is that it looks just like an FPS. Don't get me wrong I love FPS games however I don't wanna have to pay a sub for one. So I'd only pay a sub if it offers lots of sandbox and more then just 40 people on a battlefield

But I don't know a whole lot bout DUST yet or when they plan to release. Looked further then 2010

It looks like an FPS because it will be an FPS. It doesn't seem to be an MMO but there isn't much information on it other than it being an FPS and it has connections with the EVE universe.

TY that is the other one they are working on.  I couldn't remember the name of it though so I didn't mention it.  No the one I was talking about is World of Darkness.  I know that it will be based of the pena nd paper version but I'm not sure if they are gonna do it in the traditional mmorpg style or if they will go with a "sandbox" style for it.  I think it could work either way, but I'm still waiting for more information on it like many others.

We've already seen the Age of The WoW Clones.  None of them lived up to expectations.

So yea, it's a good bet that we'll see a backlash of MMOs that try (at least a little) to be different.  Even Blizzard would be stupid to clone their own game.  At the very least, they'll go for  a drastically different setting...but I hope they go further than that and take a big step away from the same model we've seen for too long.

Of course, who knows when this "next gen" will really hit.  I wouldn't expect much for 2010, but maybe 2011 or 2012 will see some of these games launch.  Will be interesting to see if Blizz or CCP can avoid the curse of bombing on their second title.

Yeah I was thinking Blizzard must be going for the 'other' crowd that doesn't play World of Warcraft so they avoid competing with themselves. But then again, perhaps they do not care since the money will come back to them anyway. So a different setting is seriously possible. And they can always do some sort of packaged deal to get people to fork out money for both WoW and the new MMO

I'll be interested just to see what theyre shooting for.  Some sort of hybrid design would make sense.

Also, I'm still waiting to hear some thing from WoD or schillings MMO.  Who knows how far out those are...

No so much pessimistic as cautious having been burned a few too many times by MMO's that do not deliver.  There have been a few MMO's with great potential that have fallen flat after release or got to X level and the content dried up or took a turn for the tarded.  There are many different reasons that gamers these days are a lot more cautious and pessimistic about the "next big thing" or the "game that has potential" because more often than not due to over hype or failure to deliver.  For me i will most likely never preorder another MMO again but it is not dead as a genre by any means to me i have hope for the future with games on the horizon like TERA, FFXIV, SW:TOR and a few others i am sure 2010 will bring more anouncements of games to come that will get argued here many times over.  I just hope that i can find a game that satisfies me and has a solid base community.  I dont need a wow killer or it to have over 1mil subs just a solid couple 100k people and some of the things that i find enjoyable.
