Is there crafting in this game?

Haven't heard a peep about crafting in STO, not even wow-esque crafting so easy a retarded monkey could do it...

So what's the scoop?

You can build up your bridge officers with your choice of skills, and apparently you can take artifacts which you find to Memory Alpha and tinker together new gear. That seems to be the extent of crafting, but it is very unclear since Cryptic has said very little about the subject.

Only thing I've seen so far is if you specialize in Engineering one of the skill tree's is 'tinkering' or whatever they call it which would let you mod your stock equipment.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

No, I haven't heard anything about crafting either but I'm sure there will be some crafting system implemented somewhere down the road. I think they just want to get the core of the game working before they get to all the other stuff we expect out of MMORPGs.

All I have seen is from tentonhammer FAQ.

First form they call crafting, it is not, is collecting and changing stats and abilities on Bridge Officers. Then trade them or sell them to others. I believe they changed that to buy or trade a skill to another players BO so they then have the new skill or ability. Takes away the slavery aspect.

The second form of crafting is more traditional, and that is Memory Alpha. If you are familiar with the IP, Memory Alpha is a planet, or computer, that contains all of the essential core knowledge of Starfleet. So we have that planet in the game. It is a hub of knowldege in the universe. Throughout the universe as you are travelling you'll find harvesting nodes. You'll find space anamolies, pick up some mineral samples, alien artifacts and not unlike you see in other games. You'll scan for these and then collect them. You can bring these back to Memory Alpha and you can use those bits of knowledge to unlock recipes. If you have the right components then you can build a super tachian rifle with whatever stats you need to put onto that rifle. First you'll have to invest in a Tachian Rifle, the samples, and some energy and you'll be able to craft that item. As you craft more items at Memory Alpha you'll unlock more recipes and be able to craft more advanced and exotic items.”

Can I craft weapons or ship upgrades?

You will be able to create numerous types of items in Star Trek Online, including things such as ground weapons and ship weapons or upgrades. You can also collect different types of components which can unlock different paths or types of items that you can create.

How does crafting work, and can I fail at crafting?

Crafting is fairly straight forward in that you'll gather components which will then be combined at different crafting stations. Clicking on the station will bring up a list of your components as well as a list of available recipes for that specific station. Crafting an item is an instant process, and you can not fail during the process. Basically if you know a recipe, you can create that item instantly so long as you own the components and are at the proper station.

I just want to know if you can play as part of the Orion Syndicate, and deal in smuggling and intergalactic slave trading.

The above highlighted form of crafting will be available at launch, no worries!

Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.

Ya know Mr. Doubter I had hopes for this game but the more I hear, or rather dont hear, im starting to come over to your way of thinking. For a game that is going to launch in just over a month the devs sure as hell arnt telling people much.

They sure aren't. I'm betting that 'open' beta won't show much of the game at all. Better to show nothing, than show that you have nothing.

Contrary to the opinions of some, I have reasons for my doubts. Also contrary to some opinions, I don't post just for sport.

I have heard enough lies from MMO devs to know that if you don't see it in game and working, there's a good chance it won't happen.

Content costs money. Empty promises cost nothing. Every game will say it has PvP. Every game will say it has crafting. Every game will say it has replay value. Every game will say it has lots of end game content. It's part of the routine. The patter.

MMO lead devs are barely a notch up on used-car salesmen.

I might be being overly pessimistic over this, but i think that they are rushing it a bit too much in order to meet deadlines. i hope not anyway, as im hoping that in a few months time they might increase the number of playable races to include romulans etc..  in Star Trek, the Klingons were not the primary foe ? of the Federation, rather they are just one of several races encountered that are perhaps more problematical... no less though than the Romulans imo..
