"When your holy grail MMO title turns out to offer absolutely nothing new to the genre except a new record in grind time to level 50, you win the "Biggest Disappointment" award from me. Grats Aion. This honor is only outmatched by the size of your experience curve." - Seraphina Brennan
NCSoft never said there was going to be anything revolutionary or next gen about Aion. If she's disappointed, it's her own fault for expecting something that was never promised. Before Seraphina goes handing out 'awards' again someone should hand her a fucking clue.

I think its interesting to see that the Aion fans were able to beat out RoM's rabid acolytes for this dubious award.
Hate or Love Aion the fact taht so many people are still talking about the game is a sign that it here for a while. Sure the game was over hyped and some of the things in the game were not what I expected but at the end of the day it stil was the best new MMO of 2009. So if people are not tlaking about the game then you know its done. Look at Warhammer, no one really says much about it anymore. So its easy to be the biggest disappointment when your the biggest, most hyped game of the year.
Warhammer came out (in the West) over a year ago. Aion 3 months ago. You can't really compare the two in terms of popularity since generally newer games get more press.
Yes I do agree, most overhyped game of the year and by far my personal biggest disappointment.

Seeing people say over and over "Aion is garbage" isn't exactly the sort of talking you want to be happening.

Yeah, because people should have known they were buying mediocre, half-assed recycled shit, and welcomed it with open arms. I mean, that's *exactly* how it was marketed. Should have just called it "Same shit, with wings" and then everyone would have known what they were getting into.
Hmm the same people are STILL hating on the game? really? you have to see it to believe it.
Not that it's bad though, carry on. It's pretty good that 3 and a half months in, Aion still seems to be of a lot interest on the forums, whether it's positive or negative comments.
Congrats on the award!
Very undeserved though. "holy grail of MMOs"? only an idiot would think that. It had already been out for months in the East and info was all around the net. People already knew that Aion wasn't going to offer a lot of new things.

I fail to see how that changes the fact that people who thought Aion was a next-gen game and then complain that it is not are idiots?

Seraphina based her choice on the fact that the game did not bring anything new to the genre. Where did NCSoft say they were trying to create something new and different?

mm so far i only reached lvl20 in this game but i got to say some part are grindy, when you got x2xp the leveling is fair.but when everything come to a crawl is the randomness of everything ,this include crafting and all kind of other stuff.
get this say you want the new neckless crafted by yourself you will first need the previews neckless then if you want say the higher crafted version (noble )its randome so basicly you will need the first noble neckless(very random and very hard craft (unless theres a potion to improve your chance i dont know )and then it gets compounded on the fact that now you can get started on the actual piece you wanted to make .another random festival
if its all going like that to lvl 50 my advice stick to non bindable item till lvl 50 the randomness of and sheer sillyness of some patern arent worth the bonus they give.
and i thot rune of magic was bad hell .picture this:your chance are higher in rune of magic then in aion
dont get me wrong its a nice game but rune of magic is the better choice and paying option abound to get rid of the sillyness
you cant get rid of yet in aion.but im betting this game will have it since its build like a p2pf2p game.
yes you read right .you pay monthly like a p2p and you pay again like a f2p game to get rid of the sillyness
now wonder aion asked arenanet to shoulder this one .one thing that cheer me up ,even thos arenanet is responsible here we all know where those freaking insane idea came out of !and no amount of wishfull thinking from ncoft will remove the culprit
arenanet is still cool with us!ncsoft?as for me not so much !they keep doing bad call on top of bad call for english market.
i do hope ncsoft dont try to push ncsoft idea in arenanet guildwars2 because if ncsoft do try to bank on gw2 by not letting arenanet do what they are good at(doing nice gw)we might might have a nasty surprise.
everytime ncsoft try to do thing their way !it kind of backfire (espacially outside their turf.asia)
Aion could be so much more, that is true. Perhaps someday it will be. However, the game is fun and has alot more to offer then a mindless grind. Just because people are disappointed in a games potential doesn't mean it's not good. There is a difference!
Well when "someday" happens noone will care because all of us will be playing Guild Wars 2 and anticipating Blizzard's new mmo.
lol
ps: are you vitorbaia on tgmonline? If Yes, saluti da Dr.Zoser!
As soon as i heard there will be no open beta i knew i whouldnt ever buy this game. Simple as that.
There was an open beta. I'm not sure where you got your info from.
lol there was no open beta...
It was considered a preview event. They were undecided about what it would be called.
Also, to clarify something regarding Aion being "new" and "different" (that has come up in this thread) way back when it was announced it was said that each server was going to be different based upon the way the players played. their decisions would create a different experience/world from what server to another.
They also added that weather would affect players as well.
Now... zoom about a year or so to release, there was a statement that Aion was going to be in the same class as "the typical mmo".
So add that previous announcement on top of the great presentations of players climbing things and what players imagined the lush landscapese would mean to a large open world and I can see how players would be dissapointed.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Best new mmorpg of 2009 is Fallen Earth? Wait, what just flew out of the window? ah yes, Massively's credibility.
Unfortunately there wasn't the greatest batch of mmo's for 2009, so anything that won best new mmorpg of 2009 is like beating a one legged man in a kicking contest.
Regardless Aion was a huge disappointment for me also, bought the CE. I was in closed beta and convinced a bunch of friends to play the game. Deal breaker for me was the abyss, I thought it would be really cool but it was a terrible disappointment. I really think the wings in this game ruined it in my eyes, just made to many problems for pvp (especially melee).
Originally posted by metalhead980 I've said it all along. Aion is nothing special. YOu guys all freaked and called this thing the second coming. Yeah........
This is exactly the thing that kills a game before it goes gold, it's happening right now with Star Wars: The Old Republic and Bioware is aware of that which is why they minimize on the details. Hype can raise people's expectations then most of the time the game never reaches them when released.

Played that, didn't really like it. What made me laugh is that someone else in this thread said Champions Online was one of the best MMO games of 2009... that game has more negativity than AoC, WAR and Aion has combined. *snicker*
It seems people make threads like these to gloat in the faces of those still playing Aion. I made a demo account and logged in, every server was "recommended". I don't think anyone even plays anymore to make fun of lol.
YOu guys all freaked and called this thing the second coming.

I'm not a fan of hype, I usually ignore them.
To bad it doesn't matter if a developer releases information or not on there game. People are going to hype it regardless.
I don't think the issue is the hype but more the current generation of MMO players as a whole. Ever since wow turned the market into a mainstream market the people that have been pulled into the MMO market do not have realistic expectations.
MMO's are complex beasts that have issues no matter how good the developer is. I don't expect SWTOR to launch without any issues or any balance problems, its just the nature of being a MMO developer and a game developer in general.
With that said I also don't think dev companys should announce there games until 6 months before release (about the time beta should start). At that point if the dev's want to give out all the information on the game then go for it. But the largest issue with the market now is that information is being given out sometimes years before release. And most of the time that information is going to end up getting changed / edited / removed / ect. You rarely see a single player game announce a year + before its ready to be released and start giving out information on it.
I think the biggest problem is both the mmo player base and the developers / marketing departments themself's. Why put yourself in a position of building up the hype around your game to such a point you know you aren't going to be able to reach it?
There doesnt exist an MMO which wasnt "disapointing" in the first few months of release since the original MMO's and there wont be one either.
I didnt mind the grind in Aion, it isnt actually that bad if you did it correctly and in a reliable group, the disapointing thing is that your typical modern MMO player doesnt want to "level" with anyone else but themselves. I think this is an affliction that WoW players have brought to the industry.
In anycase the problem with Aion was that its was extremly difficult to get grouping going to level up, I could just pvped all the time, I loved that a lot, but eventually you HAVE to level up otherwise you get owned all the time, and that of course meant getting a group.. which after the first month was very hard to do.
I wasnt disapointed with Aion, I was disapointed with the community.
It seems people make threads like these to gloat in the faces of those still playing Aion. I made a demo account and logged in, every server was "recommended". I don't think anyone even plays anymore to make fun of lol.
That's interesting. What range is "recommended'?
You logged in and it said all the servers had healthy populations. Definite sign that no one plays anymore. lolwut?

Aion is not a bad game but the game is very basic and simple. Basic and simple have already been done before ala WoW style.
