Okay, I just played this game off and on half the day yesterday and half the night and some this morning. The client is hard to connect to, supposedly due to the last patch they have implemented that caused bigtime server lag.
But... WOW. I see now that the problems the lag is causing are not nearly as serious as a lot of people are making them look.
Okay. I have missed the old school Ultima Online (pre-Trammel) for many years. I have missed the Darktide server since its populations dwindled so low. Obviously the graphics in both of those games are pretty dated too.
All I want to say is even through all the bugs and massive LAG so far, I see a TON of potential for this game now. I have had more fun in this laggy choppy Mortal Online then I have had playing ANY mmo since about 2002. I can't wait to see if they can just fix this lag problem. I am pumped, and will be certainly doing my share to give them bug feedback and such.
For any old school mmo players that might miss pre-Trammel UO or the Darktide server of Asheron's Call, you should definitely take note. I'm not gonna tell you to buy it now, but just watch this game closely...
While playing, I seen some of the best graphics in an mmo ever. Yes, much better imo then Lord of the Rings Online. More realistic looking.
I mined all sorts of metals and chopped wood and gathered resources and had to watch my back for potential PK'ers.
I tried to tame a wild horse, only to see it turn is head, look at me, and obviously because my skill at taming was so low, it attacked me aggressively and kicked my ass!
I got snooped by players and goods stolen. I attacked one such player and took my goods and his goods back as a little interest. Granted I had to attack him after he just fought another player and was low on health, but hey... all is fair play in a game like this.
Yes people, the lag is frustrating, but I can see TONS of potential here. This group certainly seems to be on the right track with Mortal Online. Atleast for old school mmo players.
I will certainly post more when I see more and all...
{Thumbs up to Star Vault} They have shocked me.

good to hear, be interesting to see how the beta progresses, i know none pve games are not to everyones taste.. but.. there is a certain amount of excitement to games that incorporate pvp into a games structure rather than an 'add-on'
I miss UO pre-Tram as well.
MO doesn't do anything to fill that need, not even close. The combat is just downright horrible.
Old school isn't the right term since both Merdian & EQ players are old school too. UO vets or something is better.
But, yes. Making games that differs from the standard MMO is a good idea and I will keep my eyes on this one.
Thanks for the post Zax..... I almost dismissed it thinking it was yet again another new account created to either promote or slam a game.
Nice to see a veteran poster and MMO player share his experience and have something positive to say about the game, especially in light of all the recent detractors.
I'd like to see this game succeed, because we need more options out there besides what is offered by the bid development shops, and posts like yours are promising.
Be sure to follow up after you get some time under your belt, (or the game gets closer to launch) and let us know what you still think of it. (because lots of games start out fun but begin to wear on a person after a short while)

Most of the things you listed sound like great fun (most of them happening in Darkfall already) but MO, best graphics? Ehh... From what I've seen they have horrible lighting issues and the terrain is just all one big flat map.
Vanguard beats it soundly. But it is impressive.
And a grumpy sidenote, I NEVER thought I'd live the day to see "I just bought the beta", disgusting. Companies can stoop real low I guess.
Nice, I'll check it out when open beta starts.

I think this is what it boils down to though... people from the MO forums come on here and call the folks who realize that the game is no shape to launch and "say it like it is", trolls. Meanwhile, those same people say "Delay the game!" on the official forums. I really don't get it.
It's a matter of understanding what SV is doing. First, their initial release date was Summer 2009. Then Q4 09. Now it's possibly the end of January. There are already multiple delays built in here, and I don't think it can be done forever. At some point, they have to launch, and even with 6 months of time MORE than now, I think they'd be in no shape to launch.
Call me a troll for that, but I'm telling you the honest truth. Look at the game in its current state -- basically not even a game, the PvP is atrocious and one dimensional, the PvE content is nonexistent, and the game has not been without lag yet. The supporters will say "No, it's just THIS patch that made it lag!" -- that's totally untrue and they know it. Whenever you get into a "massive" situation, the game is basically unplayable. The "beta event" that was only ~200 people lagged so bad that the common phrase referring to it in the MO forums, was "a slideshow". Sure, some people got a few FPS okay, but the vast majority could not play it. And most of those people had very respectable systems to run it.
I have said and maintained from many months ago (before the ban or anything else), that beta = feature complete. There's a reason for this, and we are seeing it now where a single patch destroys any playability of the game as a whole. Sure, the "Devs will fix it" but the lag issue has been there throughout the beta stages, and now as they roll towards a "gold" version, the game on a massive scale will be unplayable and buggy. And to boot, the high resolution textures aren't even in the game yet -- because the framerates with the low res stuff are so bad as it is.
They don't only need time -- they need more experienced members in their staff, especially at the top. If you know how to deploy a product and launch it, you can manage the developers and create that vision, though it will go slower for the "on the job learning" . But if the managers don't know what they are doing -- and they clearly don't -- then you can't expect the developers to magically fix everything.
Anyway, we'll see how the next few weeks go, it should be entertaining but thus far I'm yet to be proven wrong.

There's a difference between "The game is in rough shape now, but SV should delay if they need to in order to ensure they will have the best game possible. I have confidence in them, I just hope I'm right..." and "The game is in rough shape now. SV is an incompetent company that has no idea what they're doing at all. In fact, they're really trying to scam you out of all your money! Even 6 months wouldn't make this game acceptable. You should all just give up now and let this stupid dream die."
I seem to see a lot more of the latter than the former here, so don't blame the fanbots for calling a lot of people trolls.
Partly agreed -- the only problem is that SV is actively trying to get people to "buy" beta access for a game that isn't anywhere near completion. That's just unethical by my books. There was an active role in hyping up the game through interviews about features that aren't anywhere near being implemented (read the interviews on MMORPG, or other sites), so that people would buy the beta. And then they pulled a "Darkfall" by putting a few people into a closed "combat" beta, those who they interacted with in Age of Chivalry (I saw it happen), and had them write glowing reviews of the game while it was in closed "Combat beta". Remember "TheNoob" comics that Darkfall had? SV did the same shady thing, except they did it to sell beta -- not the real product.
The latter you speak of aren't exactly as you say, isn't as cut and dry as you make it out to be. Some people are genuinely disgruntled about the process, the lies, the unethical behavior, the hype, the PvP, and the blatant mismanagement of the game. Yea, you can classify them as trolls, but they all paid money so they have a right to an opinion. The problem is that you have one set of players who see SV as able to do no wrong telling the people who are disgruntled to "STFU", engaging in personal attacks and baiting them to respond. What do you expect happens on internet forums as a result?

So you mean the players can buy the game early, play in a beta for free until the game launches, and then get the game and another free month of play time? Those devious bastards! Especially if it really "isn't anywhere near completion." They could be playing for free for months! OUTRAGEOUS!
They don't buy beta access, whether that's their motive or not. They purchase the game early; when it releases, they'll get their copy without putting another cent down. If they don't care about the beta, they can wait for the game to release. In the meantime, should they decide to take the risk of buying a game that's still in development, they'll get to play it for free until it releases, and help test it so that it ends up as a better game. Doesn't sound so bad, in my book.

I think it boils down to your expectations and realizations...
But in your case, you are simply butt-hurt, because you were BANNED! It's nothing more than that, really..! The simple fact that you spread misinformation around knowlingly, to hurt StarVault is really evident.!
Everyone knows there has never been a release date. Yet, you ignorantly stipulate a September release..? You creat made-up things, then get upset when they don't happen..?
That a sheer sign that you are dilusional..!
Secondly, everyone also understand this game is released yet, except you. you keep HATING on the game for unfinished things... yet the game is unfinished. You have trivial grips that leads me and other to question if you even know what proper beta testing is. The game has only been out of it's alpha phase for 6 months... and has only been in development for 2 years.
You seem to think that polish comes beforer anythying else and absolutely have no understand that bugs, errata and problem do occure in beta. Then they are fixed. You seem to be harping on StarVault about things they aren't concerned with atm. Which you know will get taken care of once they pass those problem over... and you make it all sound dire!
As if... everything you claim, cannot be fixed, will ever be fixed, found or eradicated. Then to chid StarVault for BANNING you, you then seem to tack on an inordant amount of time to fix these issues and complain excessively about them.... when no one else cares. Creating a false and dire need to fix an absolutely trivial problem.
Hercules... when quartered you fall back to this "wait and see" attitude... but for what? When days later, you are off making white lies and being the most vocal Nay-Sayer there is..
All of beta has only been 6 months.. from only having melee, to introducing ranged and magic, onto pets, horses and housing. All work! Therefore, the individual game mechanic work. Whether or not you understand the importance of that remains to be seen, but it doesn't take 3 months to itemise a database and fix a few bugs!
But why do you care..? Why does your hacking guild care..? You aren't out to play this game, you are out to ruin it! You obviously aint going to buy another copy of Mortal Online are you..?
(So why are you still here?)

That got bumped to a Q4 release. Now it's bumped again.
I could go on, but it's quite apparent that you're simply trolling me, and the unique use of colored text that makes you stand out just makes it easier to ignore you.
On a completely different note, I'm sorry but the fact that you said you 'Bought' the beta just seems to me to be the highlight of all that is wrong with the mmo industry now. It just seems so wrong for a customer (or potential customer) to be paying to test a product.
This simple fact is rather lost on people, and instead they resort to trolling and flaming you, instead of arguing the merits of the debate. Ah well.
It's all perspective man.
It really is how you look at it.
I didn't technically "buy the beta". I bought the game client download and will get 30 days free once the game releases, as with almost every other pay-to-play mmo ever to launch. Pay to Play mmo games charge you for the game client and typically give you 30 days free. This is no different. But this company gives you access to their beta to help test it and get to play it for purchasing it early.
Think about it.
Warhammer, Aion, Everquest 2 and even World of Warcraft all did exactly the same thing. They sold people a game client and gave them 30 days of gametime free. All of these games also had stores selling them many months ahead of release just to "guarantee" a launch day copy of the game.
In fact, you might even say that Star Vault is giving even more for their purchase price because they are giving guaranteed beta play for many months with the purchase and this is above and beyond what players got buy buying Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft a year before they released.
It's a purchase that helps both parties here. I wanted to play the game NOW and not wait until official launch day, so I purchased the game client early and still get the 30 days free after launch, but by purchasing early, I get beta access. Star Vault is a small company, and I'm sure the orders completed ahead of their official launch will only help their cause to put out a better game.
If I wasted my money? What if I did? Who are you to judge me for that? Or to judge Star Vault for ripping me off. There are a HELLUVA lot bigger scams and rip offs out there then buying a game client some small team has been hard at work on for almost 3 years. You REALLY think Star Vault is horrible for selling their game early and giving buyers early beta access as an incentive? Hmmm, then I wonder what you think of the big oil companies and the pharmaceutical corporations out there.
Again, it's all perspective.
And when you look at it logically and look at the big picture, I hardly would call Star Vault crooks. In fact, they are probably working a helluva lot harder for the money they make then both you and I both.
If you don't want to buy their unfinished game, then don't. I understand you and your reasoning. But don't sit here and act like these guys are scam artists, because honestly I think you are soooo far off from the truth, it's almost comical.
And YES - I am having a BLAST in the Mortal Online beta. I really am. I've already got my moneys worth in my mind. And that's what counts, because you know what? - It was MY money. My decision. And I am happy with it.
As far as the game goes, all I know is about 11pm my time last night, about the time Star Vault devs were likely coming back to work... the lag I had seen the the first day and a half was DRASTICALLY reduced. It actually started playing pretty smooth and was fun as hell.
I tamed a horse, learned how to ride a horse. I got bucked off in the dirt a few times as I was obviously skilling up on handling the horse. I learned how to build my own bow, had to go out and gather the appropriate resources. The skill system reminds me VERY much of the UO skill system. You get better at what you keep doing.
I'm sure I'll find many bugs and problems, but honestly so far, I am having too much fun to notice too many problems.
It's a breath of fresh air in a world flooded with Chinese 2D mmos and WOW clones.
And I appreciate the devs for take a step in the complete opposite direction as the 500 other mmos out there.
I appreciate them for giving the old school Ultima Online some respect and following so much of what made UO so much fun.
I think these guys genuinely deserve an applaud. Not for being the best or most skilled programmers in the world, because it's obvious that they are not. But they deserve a big round of applause for coming up with their own "UO" and making it 3D with some pretty dazzling features, skills, and even graphics.
That's my two cents for what it's worth.
Oh by the way, I read the stuff about this game handing player position, attacks, etc on the client rather then the server. Now that is a HUGE concern for me, and I'm baffled at that. THAT is by far my biggest concern for this game at the moment.

Nobody bought the beta, if you preorder you get to beta test, that's the gimmick. If nobody pre ordered then maybe people would get to test for free but 10k+ ppl pre ordered. Alot of ppl (including me) seen potential in this game so they pre ordered.
Would i have pre ordered after being able to test it for free first? No. I had quit Aion and needed something new. But thats where everyone thinks its a scam, because the vision gets shattered once you enter the game, and remorse sets in quick.

Im not too tech savvy, so i don't see the problem here. Im guessing it causes sync issues?

No, like DnF, it makes it VERY easy to hack and cheat.
As to the poll.....What a hoot, they sold 10K beta copies and only 137 people even cared enough on the forums to vote? Says everything I need to hear about this game and it's future. This is what happened in Vanguard, they had thousands of beta testers and you were lucky if 150 ever logged in at a time since the game was such a POS.
Oh well I am sure that Deceit-n-Lie, Tabula Rasa, etc, etc, etc can make room on the pile of festering crap MMORPG's that have crashed and burned in the last decade. What's the score now? Several dozen failures and less then 10 successes? Wonder why so many of us are suspicious of high and mighty promises made by children trying to run unknown companies.
"If you were as smart as you think you are, you would realize that you are an idiot"
Nice, thanks for your comments zaxtor. Im really wondering myself whether to preorder.....
Im an old UO and EQ vet myself and have tried countless mmorpg's out there. The concept of this game is absolutely awesome in my eyes, i just hope they can pull it off.
You think that because they banned my account I can't play? LOL
I'm in a guild genius. Just think about it.
If the game is horrible why would you go back in the first place? Sounds to me like it's decent but needs work, which would make sense, since you "check in".

I've played both MO and Darkfall didnt like any of em.. maybe it would be cool if they released like 10 years ago..
edit: but then again ultima online would clearly take all their subs and make em go under bawhaha

Yeah Herc, why are you playing this if you dont like it???? just out of curiosity....
Man, there's no need to be defensive. As I said in various other threads, it's your money to do with as you wish. I never judge anyone on what they want to do with their own cash.
All I said was that it just seems wrong to me that no matter how it's packaged, the customer seems to be paying the Supplier to test the Supplier's product. In my mind, it's like as though I just walked into Ford's factory and asked to pay them to test their newly designed car. To me it doesn't matter if Ford told me that I could get a 10% discount off the car or something like that when it rolls off the factory line if I did that. Just doesn't seem right to me.
See, your just not seeing the point. We bought the game, I don't even play in the beta because If I do im afraid ill burn myself out like I have done with countless other games. Your example is totally off base, its more like you ordered the car before it was released and Ford gave you the chance to drive it around the town. Not your example.
