I used to play shadowbane and i really missed it, it was a game that no one has ever done before, players controlled the world, that is what sandbox is supposed to be. I have yet to find anything even remotelt close to Shadowbane.
You could try Second life or Mabinogi... Grand Fantasia has an interesting Anima crafting system where a main point is to work your three sprites and level up their crafts to give you armor and weapons in which to grind to the next level.
It's fun crafting, and they are able to be summoned out and follow you around, pick up items for you Torchlight style... In addition you are able to send them off with them gathering minerals and materials for you and bring them back; sometimes they come back after experiencing events and share them with you.
I pretty much only play the game to craft, but I need to grind/do instances every now and then to make more money as your sprites charge you for labor depending on your relationship (though it's usually only a few copper or a silver or two). In addition it's one of the rare free MMOs that has a highly used auction house and no characters standing around selling their stuff.
The gameplay is fairly interesting as well as you level up; skills are fast paste, but normal attacks are the usually wait and attack -- luckily skills aren't on high cooldowns and may be frequented at a good rate and mana restores itself, especially if you sit down.
It's fun having one sprite craft in front of you, another being sent out to gather supplies, and the other training/reading books to improve the way they hunt/gather/craft. Then they come back with stories of their travels... and their mood has them talking to you in different ways. "Yay! Master is the best!" "I craft this for master!" " ^_^! Master~~ I did it! Please take this item I have crafted for you!" ...or they come back empty handed with the anime tear faces and express their sorrow in failing you.
Ultimately it's just a game to waste time on, as games are. But I enjoyed it for a time.
...uhhh..I feel like these choices fall wayy wayy wayy out of alignment with what I am looking for, I will give RealmLords a looksee, Secondlife is NOT even remotely close to Shadowbane, and so is Mabinogi, why? I have played those two. Remember people, im talking SANDBOX NvN! As in, Shadowbane, if you are unsure what shadowbane is, please be sure to read www.shadowbaneemulator.com/page.php
Wurm is the only closest thing i can see compared to, say, SecondLife, and Mabinogi. Please think before you blurt out random MMOs.
Yeah, I specifically named games that are planning NvN or RvR. Out of the 3 I listed, only Aika isn't a sandbox, as well. LinkRealms is closer to UO, however.

face of mankind maybe? but sci-fict
totally irrelevant to the topic.. but i love your sig.. that is all.
(i dont know how its going anymore for the free part of the game but maybe try wurmonline?)
Wurm? Ehh..something with a lesser learning curve than that... not super sandbox but damn close.
no such thing buddy.

Sorry, but at this time there is no game out - FTP or PTP - that has all the elements that Shadowbane had in it.
I'd try out RealmLords. Might give a fuzzy feeling...or not. Who knows?
I'd also look out for LinkRealms and Aika in the future.
Check out the MUD I'm making!

Yeah you are cool, im talking about that "Second life, Mabinogi Grand Fantasia" Junk. "Omfg it has 15 vs 15 PvP, it must be like shadowbane."
Not even close.
