Old school fantasy feeling

Greetings everyone,

I have been playing WoW off and on for the past couple of years but I would like to try something else for a change.

Before WoW I was a fan of a MUD called Legends of Cosrin and I really loved the feel of that game. Dark and mysterious where you could goof around at the market square and explore deep dark forests.

I revisited the MUD scene for a few days, but text only games aren't what I am looking for anymore. I have very little experience playing other games. I have tried playing Eve Online for a month but I wasn't able to get into the mood because I am looking for a fantasy game and not per se a sci fi game.

So what game would you guys recommend if I was looking for a serious fantasy game where you can explore forests/castles/icy glaciers etc...

On a side note: I am not looking for instant gratification, I don't mind to put in effort to achieve results (when those results are achieved they often feel much better because of the effort required)

I can't believe I'm saying this, but probably Vanguard would be a good choice. It's an explorers wet dream and features very classic fantasy...

I have read about vanguard, but most people reffer to it as a buggy game that is stuffed in a dark corner by SOE.

But I shall put in some effort to see if it might fit the bill for me, thank you for your input.

Do you happen to know if they have a trial ?

I have been reading a lot about vanguard, but it seems that beside players who are leaving in masses that the developers are choking the game to the point where people are saying that the game will kill itself in a year or less.

So does anyone else have any suggestions ? Or perhaps counter arguments why Vanguard should be a viable option.

It's about three bucks via download (e.g. steam) and yes, it also has a trial.

I still suggest you give it a try as these three bucks include 30 days playtime. I'm not a big Vanguard fan either, but that's because of the stuff you seem to be looking for.

Bugs and performance issues have been ironed out mostly, the tedious travelling and harsh quest-requirements have been chopped down by SoE.

As of two months ago you get a solid, extremely deep classic fantasy MMO with probably the largest open, seamless, content-filled gameworld ever created.

It sure does lack players but the game is _not_ dependend on population strength: By joining one of the major guilds you have people to do dungeons and quests all the time.

And this is really coming from someone who didn't like Vanguard in the first place (because of lacking PvP, not enough action-orientation and stuff I personally like)...

Again, by what you said you were looking for, give it a shot, three bucks is like nothing to lose...

If you insist on looking further, Everquest 2 might be a game for you. Pacing, character variety, interface and quest structure are quite similar to Vanguard, EQ2 though has a lot more players and is fully supported with updates and expansions. Downside: Visuals, the world size and design is awful if compared to other titles.
