World of Warcraft: Hotfix Adds Loot Improvements to Oculus

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Blizzard has rolled out a new set of hotfixes today for World of Warcraft, one of which aims to address the issue of the popularity of the Oculus heroic, as players appear to be leaving the instance when they encounter it during a random instance queue using the Dungeon Finder feature.

To entice people to stay, Blizzard has added an additional loot bag to the instance, but only when it pops as a result of a random heroic queue

From Zarhym, Blue on the official World of Warcraft forums:

To encourage players not to shy away from the many invigorating adventures to be had in The Oculus, we have applied a change to enhance the rewards players are provided when selected for this dungeon via the Random Heroic option in the Dungeon Finder. Once Ley-Guardian Eregos is defeated, one loot bag per character will be provided in his chest in addition to the current rewards. Each loot bag will offer players rare gems, two additional Emblems of Triumph, and a chance of being rewarded the Reins of the Blue Drake. These fine treasures could be yours should you honor your fellow party members by besting the challenges contained within The Oculus! Keep in mind, however, that these extra loot bags will only be awarded to each party member if Oculus is selected by the Dungeon Finder when players choose the Random Heroic option.

In light of this change, the Reins of the Azure Drake will now have a chance of dropping in both 10- and 25-player versions of The Eye of Eternity.

The full list of changes can be viewed here.

Will these changes be enough to encourage you to stay in the instance when it pops? If not, why? Let us know in the comments below!

Maybe if they were emblems of frost.  As it is, no one will do occulus, even with the changes.

LOL, guilty as charged. As soon as I log in the instance and see this place i'm outta there. Basically, it boils down to this for me. I don't care how long the instance is, but if there is any part where I am not in control of my char, and I have to arse about on mounts, drakes, dragons or what ever, I am not interested.

I have geared up three chars now for all the 245 stuff, and they have their T10 capes if that's what they are, but I'm getting bored to death just like I new I would as soon as I had all the Triumph stuff.

I am not in a raiding guild anymore as I don't feel I can be arsed giving all that effort again, only for Blizzard to come along months later and screw me over by letting every blue geared can't play wont play person in game get gear as good as I have worked hard for.

I got my Triumph gear, some 232 gear and I'm struggling to keep interest in farming Frost badges as they are hard to obtain if unguilded, which is how I intend to remain.

I just wish Blizz would roll out a new quality game like WoW was, and then I could get on with that. Unfortunately, AION was not the game I thought it was gonna be, neither has Conan been or LOTRO. Come on Blizzard, how much do you want to wring outta this turd? it's almost bone dry now and done to death.

Heh, I couldn't even get my raid-geared guild to run that dungeon before the fixed it, and the nerfs applied to it still haven't done sh** to increase interest.

Besides EoE, Oculus was the only dungeon missing from my frozen wastes title, I only did it once, and afterwards said f*** it. The only way they are going to make me run that dungeon by choice is by turning the last boss into a VoA type, who drops random parts of T10.

I guess I'm in the minority. I don't hate Oculus quite as much as everyone else, and would rather spend 25 minutes getting badges in it than wait 15 minutes for a different one. If the addition of a mount encourages people to stick it out, great! (I'm also kind of a mount collector, too.)

People were not dropping out of this instance because of the loot, they were dropping it because nobody likes flying the dang drakes.

The only thing that is going to shut up 90% of the players out there is if they remove the instance or rework it to allow players to play their class and not a drake.

As it is, when I do a random and find myself in that instance I will still drop it just like I do now. 15 min debuff = 1 or 2 daily quests done.

It would not matter to me what it dropped...I have been there once and I never plan to go back.

Haha I got it three times in a row. Each time the group disbands. It is just simply a horrible dungeon that close to no one likes. Honestly they should remove it from the game or random dungeon. Maybe leave it up to a vote of the players.

Yep, and honestly this is the refrain I've heard over and over. Now people will run it again to get a chance at the drake mount maybe, but that's it. Blizzard is just putting a band-aid on the problem. They need to completely "re-work" Occulus. It's just not fun for folks and that's the bottom line. Hopefully they will consider doing are rework of it in the Cataclysm Expansion at least.

Well Blizzard tried something new with Oculus, but atleast they tried.

Oculus gets a bad rep because players are taken out of their comfort zone once on the drakes, people say wow never changes well he we have Oculus something very different and still they complain mostly cus its not a standard tank'n'spank.

Oculus was one of the most fun instances when i used to play. I soloed the boss on the platform that shoots lightning on my DK, everyone else was dead cause they diddn't know how to stay outside of the lightning. Was on heroic too.

Last boss is a bit hard and requires actual teamwork.

The problem isn't that it is hard or that it is challenging. The problem with Occulus is that it quite simply is not fun. Alot of people really really despise that mounted dragon combat. They went in there enthusiastic the first time, cleared the place in 30 minutes with no trouble, and never ever wanted to go back. The huge number of people willing to simply take the 15 minute hit rather then play Occulus should be a very telling indicator. It's not the loot. Its not the dificulty. It's the mechanics.

Problem with Oculus in my opinion is not that it is difficult. Its just plain and simple boring.

I  can only speak for myself, but I  love playing my characters and dislike the type of mounted combat that occurs in Oculus.

I hope they will use their creativity to make more instances where you need crowd controll (sheep, shackle, traps etc.) and play on your characters full repertioare of skills instead of mounted type of combat that distance you from this layer of gameplay.

Wow is an awesomely fun game.. but a mistake in my opinion is an almost total removal of CC (too fast paced AOE now). Considering that more classes got CC  in WOTLK (shaman) this is strange and something I  hope they reconsider for Cataclysm.

That's a pretty cool move. I've had several groups where people dropped it as soon as they zoned in and saw where they were. I admit I've even done it once or twice but that was because I don't like sitting in the queue waiting for the next group of players to attempt Eregos with.

  • qombiqombi Member UncommonPosts: 1,170

Maybe if the instance didn't suck, people would want to do it? It is sad Blizzard thinks the way to get people to want to do it is throw candy at them. Actually I doubt anyone would do any 5 man instance in WoW if there wasn't loot attached to it now. They are all boring AOE zergfest. The only way you can die is deliberately do something horribly stupid and that is just a maybe on die. I am speaking of maybe jumping in lava or pulling 8 packs of monsters with the healer afk.

The instances are awfully boring now and not worth playing.

Nobody thinks Oculus is hard. You have like 4 abilities. I think the reason everyone hates it is because the action is a lot slower than most fights and you simply push the same button over and over.

I don't mind Oculus and never have. Only been able to run it maybe twice, and that was before the LFG randomizer. The one time it brought me there, of course everyone but me abandoned right away.

It's funny that so many people don't like Oculus because of riding on drakes, but ToC gets such attention, and you're on a mount there for the first 1/2 of the dungeon.

I don't think the loot changes will help make it less popular, mainly because the vast majourity of folks probably don't know it has changed. I would have run it even without the changes, because interesting and fun keeps the game for me. BTW, someone said all you do is hit 4 buttons... that's what you usually do on a regular character anyways, pretty much. Playing most MMOs are not hard.

I have no idea why people don't like it. Silliness, in my opinion.

Current games: WoW, Runes of Magic
Past games: WAR, DDO, Fiesta, AoC, Rohan, Dungeon Runners, Free Realms, Tabula Rasa, LoTRO

I guess I'm one of those rare people too who doesn't mind when Oculus pops up. It's shorter, it's unique, and considering that NO ONE would run it before the random dungeon feature, it's nice to run a dungeon I haven't run 8 billion times already. I've yet to log in there though without at least one person dropping, but it's their loss. It's not like it's so much less thrilling than clearing waves in VH or sitting through CoT while the scenes play out for five minutes at a time..

I honestly think the blizzard team just needs to take a step back and ask themselves why people are actually leaving instead of trying to entice people to play it.

Obviously a great deal of people do not find this instance fun, that is where the problem lies. They should make it fun for people instead of making it a boring pain in the butt, but enticing by a 'loot bag'. If blizzard really wants people to play this instance and have fun with it then they should redesign it so the gamers can have fun in it.

I still wouldn't run it even with the extra loot bag at the end, it just isn't a fun instance.

god blizzard really piss me off ,see how simple it is to patch a loot on a given boss!if its so easy why dont they do the same for the vanilla wow raid dragon!i can say why!it would empty their dungeon and raid instanced lol.we wouldnt want that lol.
