Does anyone play LOTRO with..

..a Alienware M15x?

I'm thinking about upgrading to a gaming laptop since my current laptop is generally for mobile purposes around campus, and not very game friendly with an integrated card.  Plus I don't use my desktop for anything anymore, so I'd rather get a new laptop instead of building a new desktop.

I'm working with a $1800 budget, which is what an M15x would cost after I customized it a bit.  I'm just wondering how it would play LOTRO.  Here's the important stuff:

15.6 Display

Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)

1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260M

3GB DDR3 at 1333MHz

320GB SATAII 7,200RPM

Any help is appreciated.  It doesn't have to be an M15x, just any laptop around $1800 or less that would play current games pretty well.  Thanks.

That would easly play LOTRO but Alienwares are OVER RATED and way to expensive. You can get a better or same laptop for $900 cheaper.

    My Opinion,

You don't need Alienware or Dell for that matter anymore. They were good 10 years ago when computers were crap and manufactures did not have to stand by their word.  I think HP's ( middle of the road ) computers are just as good.

I have a HP labtop gaming computer with 4 g ram 64bit with NVIDIA GeForce 8600 video card and it can play anything.  I use it to play EQ2 and Vanguard  and many off line games with no problem at all.  I bet I could play Lotro at close to max settings.

I paid around $850 for it well over a year ago. Don't blow your money on high end stuff !

One other thing, when you find what you like, try and read some reviews on it to be sure it don't have an over heating problem. Many gaming computers are having problems with that.  I have a good one some friends are having problems with that.  I was at a Best Buy all set to buy one, and something told me to hold off. Went home read some reviews on it, sure enough major problems with over heating.

Ya I try to check reviews, but they can be bias sometimes... and they didn't really answer my specific question about LOTRO.  I'd like a higher end laptop now, so I don't have to get a new one for at least a while.

Just bought an Asus G72 laptop for $1100 and it easily plays lotro on full settings without even trying.  Asus really seems like a good bang for your buck laptop and it's made with fantastic quality.

I played LOTRO on an m15x. It runs fine - in fact, it runs great.

Now, I've answered the OP question, but I'm going to add my opinion as well: it's not the best investment. My m15x was plagued with the classic problems other m15x owners had been reporting for two years. It literally fell apart. I bought it used and had no warranty options. I tossed it last month and bought a solid desktop.

I wouldn't buy a "gaming" laptop unless you work away from home or will really take advantage of gaming on the go. If once in awhile you might go to your friends house for a LAN game - just buy a PC. For $1800 you could get 5x the performance in a desktop and a 24"+ monitor.

I bought my laptop ignoring the advice of friends I just gave. I wanted to be cool. Even if the m15x didn't fall apart the gaming experience on a good desktop with a large monitor is so much better. And I see that now. But if you spend more than 50% of your time gaming outside of your home then yah; buy whatever you can afford. Make sure you're not fantasizing about the amount of time you think you'll be gaming on the go like I did.

"Gaming Laptop" is an oxymoron imho.  If you need the laptop for other reasons fine go for it, but to use as a gaming platform for no other reason then no desktops are much better.

    Also Alienware are very over-rated.

aleinware was crap from day one all your paying for is fancy labeling sure it has a nice engine but you can get that from building it yourself at a cheaper cost then they sell for

mine is 4 years old 1.63ghz cpu hyperthreading single core

    nvidia 7900gt 1g vram

    2 gig of ram

and i can still run games well beyond what this comp can do and quite well at that

Gaming laptop is not an oxymoron.  Apparently you don't know what that word actually means.  Regardless, 10 years ago what you say would have been true because it just wasn't cost efficient, but it certainly is now.  If you need a mobile computer and also happen to like playing video games why is it wrong to pay $1000 for a laptop with an Nvidia 260M GTX video card in it, or some equivalent?   Are you suggesting people with mobile needs buy a desktop AND a laptop?  Now that seems moronic to me.

However, I will agree that Alienware is a waste of money, always has been, always will be.

Those of us in the armed forces rely on gaming laptops quite a bit. And almost everyone I know has an asus, no alienwares.

I play LOTRO on both my Alienware laptop and desktop. I have the 17inch lappy and runs it on high settings fine - yours will be  totally ok

To err is human....to play is divine

    Thanks.

I decided to take the plunge and buy it.  I know I can build myself a really powerful desktop for about half the price... and I completely planned on doing just that.  Then I re-evaluated my use of the desktop (since the one I have now is on its way out), and I learned I barely use it as it is.  A laptop is more more useful to me as a college student since I rarely spend enough time at my apartment.  For example, during break I'm stuck with my crappy laptop atm until the end of January because I wasn't lugging my desktop back home.

Not doing it to be "cool", just wanted something that could play current and future games decently enough, that I could bring with me anywhere.

I checked out sager, and from what I could tell the price vs performance wasn't much better then an Alienware.

If I had $2500 to spend, I would have gone for a sager in a second.

Just pick something with no heating problems, that's the main issue with laptops anyway.
