ultimately the amount of customization cryptic offered is too much, already in beta we have seen the results the freaks crank out, neon rainbow uniforms over bodies only orochimauru could love.

Yet, who's to say that the Federation may not have found and befriended a race of aliens that looks like you are describing? Remember, the era that this game is based off of is after any of the movies and TV shows. Just because YOU think they look horrendous does not make them not as plausible as a new race discovered and befriended by the Federation.
I'll probably start off Human and do Cruisers, a Klingon also as the Birds of Prey have always been my favorite. Later I may do a Vulcan Science Officer/Ship alt as Vulcan and science fit together.
you havent seen some of the freaks people have come up with, no way nature would physically evolve that way ect, twisted horrors of things with sliders min and maxed just to look gross. any sentient that got disfigured like that would either suicide or hide its ugly self from the rest of us hehe. and then theres the neon rainbow uniforms, i hope they nerf the customization i really do. let poeople pick some materials for looks, cloth leather metalic maybe ect. perhaps styles based on shows movies and the games own new one. i dont wanna see the rainbow barfed on me uniforms, at least give me an option to turn custom off so i see defaults on the artisticly challenged people that cant stand to look good =D
I will do both, a human and a custom race for my second character. My custom race wont look very outlandish though , just different enough so shes not mistaken for Terran.

Same thing for me on the custom race. Mine will probably be a subtle variation on a human look.
I'm trying to come up with a bit of a different "species psychology" to play him with, as well (not that I'm a huge RP'er, but it'd be fun I think).

Think I will use a Human as my main (or perhaps a Vulcan)
Human. I love aliens but I don't think I could ever be one
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
Vulcan Science Captain as my main and maybe a Klingon for a little PvP action(Not that I won't PvP with my main as well).

If you digital download from Atari you get TOS costumes and can play as a Joined Trill
I'll probably do some of both. I like playing a human in most games, though I'll probably be primarily playing Klingon in STO (as a Klingon).
I'll definitely play around with the alien race creator, though, and might ultimately go with a custom race.
