This will be considered the worst MMO launch in history if they actually do this.  It is still in pre-beta testing as they just now added the features in.  Disastrous...

They have 25 days to do the following:

- Installer (make it install physix/drivers/directx, like all the other games do, for less launcher errors)

- Patcher - make a http/torrent download, don't make us redownload all the files (extremely slow)

- Fix the guard system

- Fix the AI

- Fix the map nodes (make it to where the zones don't have an invisible line on the floor)

- Fix server stability

- Fix server lag

- Make sure hackers can't exploit 24/7 to max out everything and have unlimited weapons on the first day of release

- Fix the bugs from the previous patches that were reported

- Release the official NA/EU servers so we can test them out

- Fix it to when you are crafting it actually shows the item you are making

- Make the horses more maneuverable

- Implement a group/party system

- Fix the UI

- Fix the magic system to where its NOT auto target

- Add the Tindrem city in

- fix the theif system

IRC is about as official as SV gets.

What kills me is that there are people in the thread saying "Yeah it sucks but they have to launch it to start making money". With the game in as bad of shape as it's in there going to keep themselves from making money by launching it in this state.

Todays gamers are not very forgiving when it comes to disasterous launches. It's better to delay until you can recieve funding to finish it than it is to shove it out the door and pray you don't get roasted alive lol.

  • daarcodaarco Member UncommonPosts: 4,276

It would be best to delay, however not all the gaming community is build up with 12 years kids who understands nothing about making a MMO.

Most gamers today are 25+ and have patience for a good idea. And when not major companys need to launch MMOs is good shape....why would a small indie developer have to?

    Make no sense for me.

I have no idea what your trying to say. It seems your agreeing with me, while at the same time attempting to insult me on top of disagreeing with me. What I do get the gist of though is that your saying

"If the larger companies can get away with launching an MMO that is not launch ready, why can't SV get away with launching MO in the state it's in?" Paraphrased of course.

In that sentence lies the key! Larger companies. Did you see the hidden answer to your own question withing your question yet? Larger companies.

Basically SV's already almost broke at this point, and they really can't be expecting to much revenue at this point because the majority of the people interested in playing MO are currently playing MO. I mean you can't really believe otherwise.

SV: "Pre-order now and pay now and you can get into the beta and play without a monthly fee until we launch!"

What person that is a fan of a game is going to pass that offer up, unless of course they want to wait until the game has had time to receive some polish and fixes. Launching a broken game isn't going to snag these people lol. It's going to run them off. If they weren't willing to pay to beta the game without a monthly fee involved, what in the world makes you think they will do so with a monthly fee involved?

SV has all the money it can really expect at this point outside of monthly fees from those already playing. Sure they will sale some copies at launch but you have to assume that the majority that are interested are already in game XD.

Now considering a great number of people currently playing are shouting "Delay, Delay, Delay" and SV doesn't seem like there going to, do you think everyones going to be happy paying a monthly fee for a game they are shouting is far from ready?

I'm far from 12 lol and I have a good idea of what MMO's go through durring, before and after launch. While many things will be different between MMO and MMO many things will be the same.

Thats something else that I find funny, everyone does realize that the majority of the people interested in playing MO are currently playing MO right? And many of them seem to think the game isn't ready for launch lol.

I mean seriously lol, the offer was pay for MO now and get into beta and play beta for free with no monthly fee until launch........ Please tell me that you see this would snag the majority of people interested. The rest are waiting to see how launch goes lol. If it's F'd up I really doubt MO has a bright future lol.

  • daarcodaarco Member UncommonPosts: 4,276

Yeah, i agree with you there.

In a perfect world we would have big sandbox MMOs created by big MMO companys. No early launches and always would the game be polished.

But now we need to put our little trust we have left......to the smallest and most amateurish companys imaginable. I dont think that is fair for anyone. I can really understand if SV wished right now they vere a much bigger company. But they arent.

And as long noother camany is gonna give what the small indie comanys willl.......then i have to take the bad with the good : )

What about real business investors?  If so many folks see promise in MO, then why doesn't anyone with some money invest in the game?

Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.

Starvault is a public company, you can buy stock if you want to and plenty of people have.

This is the best arguement/statement I have heard from a MO fan since I started visiting MMORPG.com.

I do not like the game, and won't be playing it without major improvements, and YES I did test the game, and DID get a refund.

But with the market now, they did no justice to the idea IMO. I wish any well financed company would get a little balls, and do sandbox style right, and put out some cash for a real top notch dev team.

I remember when Mortal Online was first annouced how excited everyone got, myself included. The longing for Mortal Online increased even more when Darkfall finally launched and people saw how unready for launch it was. It is quite sad hearing from those who have and are testing it that Mortal Online will most likely be worse at launch then Darkfall was.

And to think, I didn't think it was possible to have a worse launch than DF's.

Not just worst...make it 100 times worse...

There is no way that Mortal Online could be worse then the launch of Dark and Light.

Dark and Light takes the cake on worst launch ever.

I am playing beta now, and it's already 50 times better then Dark and Light was at it's launch.

But I agree, I think the game needs another 3 to 6 months minimum.

Oh please, park the shililng at the door.

We know that the game is NOT 50x better then DnL and I think to this day that DnL is one of the worst games ever made by one of the most dishonest companies in existance, but.......SV is trumping them. At least DnL had a large functional world at launch and from what I saw a much larger player base.

What I find the most amusing is how many DnF fawnbois are on here singing the praises of MO. Guess DnF is not all it's cracked up to be.

Of course no FFA PVP game ever is and will never be. That is why the large investors and companies are not interested. What makes any sane person think that a failed concept for the last decade would magically turn around and work? "Gankfest the game", by any other name,  has not and never will be successful. This will just be another one legged dog in the race with all the other ones.

That is mainstream for you!  That is why I hate all mainstream.  Same thing goes for music too.  It is called greed, and it looks like people got into this business for the money not the games!  I'm looking for the ones that got into it for the games, it is hard to find, but the only thing we have to go by is the company that is making the games, but if they are new they could be trying to make a name for themselves and it could be good, it is just hard to tell.  I think I will be buying games that I know will be good by the company and testing games only if it is unknown.

I'm sorry.  Where in that thread does it say the official release date is this month?  I didn't see any developers respond...  The devs have said countless times that nothing said in IRC is *official.*  In fact, he doesn't even say it will release this month, he says they plan to.  If I remember, they planned to release in September, then at the end of December.  Plans change, I really doubt it'll come out this month, especially since they just took a two week vacation.  You don't do that right before a release.

    Also:

There won't be any NA/EU server distinction at launch, there will be one.  Why divide an already small population among two servers?  There is little to no lag for us in the US, at least I haven't had any - neither have my friends.

Magic will not be changed for launch, that is fact.  It sucks, I know, I agree, but it will be as it is.  Eventually they will change it.

The server lag has already been addressed.  The severe lag that plagued the game after this last patch has been eliminated.  Now they have to fix some new bugs that came with it, causing the occasional client crash - that's what beta's for afterall.

We don't know whether or not hackers will be able to max everything the first day, in fact the stats and materials are all handled server-side, so I don't see how they could.  Worst they could do is maybe speed hack/one hit kill hack - then they get banned.

The patcher *should* be changing soon.  A friend of mine in my guild recently wrote one and sent it to Starvault.  He claims they liked it and will use it, so we will have to see on that.

I don't see the problem with the guard system, unless you mean that they aren't normal NPCs but summoned when you call them.  That's not game breaking, or even a bug, it's just a temporary, functional system.

If they fix the bugs it'll be almost release ready, just needs some polish/Tindrem added.  The rest can come after release.

EVE is not FFA PVP, never was, never will be, but that's a topic for another thread.

I agree, that thread does not constitute an official launch date, just one dev's hope that they could get it to all come together this month.  Developers never have a clue what the real state of the software is, better to find someone on the internal QA staff as they'll have a more realistic picture.

But its probably likely that they are running on fumes as someone said and probably will take a gamble and see if the people who are sticking with them in open beta will be willing to support them for the next 6 months.

If they can launch and even get 10K subscribers it not only brings in a small revenue stream but it would show any potential investors that there is a market out there for this game and they might sink in some more cash.

    For the uninformed:

Please note, the notes are not final and are subject to change.

    Version 0.12.15.17 – Beta

    1-08-2010

    ------ FEATURES ------

    - A basic refining system and associated skills has now been added; refining allows players the ability to create alloys. Due to this addition what was called Refining in the previous patch has been renamed to Extraction.

    ------ ADDITIONS & CHANGES ------

    General:

    - You now get a 10% stat loss when resurrecting if you have five (5) or more Murder Counts left. This is not a temporary loss; the stats you lose will have to be re-trained.

    - All Astral Guidance Pillars will now be shown in Etherworld (when you are dead), rather than just the closest one. This is a temporary fix and will be replaced by a distance-based system later on.

    - Added a chat message when you gain an item.

    - Several new materials have been added.

    UI:

    - House sign UI is now moveable

    - Book UI is now moveable.

    - The target panel is now only visible when you have a target.

    - Added new Flag icons.

    - Added new Resource icons.

    - A User Guide in the Main Menu has been added (Please note, the guide is a work in progress and is not complete).

    Combat:

    - You no longer get a timer when you enter combat mode, it is now possible to draw your weapon while moving. You will still get a timer when exiting combat mode.

    - You no longer stop sprinting when jumping.

    AI & Mounts:

    - You are no longer able to mount a horse if you carry too much weight. If you pick up more weight than you can carry while already mounted, your mount will not be able to move.

    - Mounting now has a line of sight calculation.

    - You now need to be a lot closer to the mount when mounting.

    - Creatures' hearing is no longer infallible. It will now be easier to sneak up on creatures from behind.

    - Creatures should now respond quicker to attacks.

    - Creatures should now respond quicker to Players when discovering them.

    - Removed and changed some taming messages.

    - Rabbits have been added in Toxai and around the Bandit Camp.

    - Wolves now move faster.

    Art & Sound:

    - Forest regions around Fabernum, Kranesh, Colorful Oaks and the northwest area of Amaruk Nuur (big central lake) are currently being reworked. Ground foliage may be missing, trees have been replaced and view distances to the forests have been significantly increased.

    - New efficient collision has been added for a lot of objects in the world.

    - Shadows of clouds have been temporarily removed.

    - Certain trees are now more optimized

    - Ambience added in the Bandit Camp.

    - Ambience added between Vadda and Bakti.

    - Priest beacon added in Gaul'Kor.

    - Additional ambiences added in Gaul'Kor.

    - Additional ambiences added in Kranesh.

    - Additional ambiences added in Fabernum.

    - Additional ambiences added in Meduli.

    - A bridge has been added over the stream near Toxai.

    - Minor tweaks in Toxai.

    - Minor tweaks in the jungle.

    Skills:

    - Significantly reduced the chance to gain attribute points when you use skills.

    - Attribute gain will now only be triggered by the skill you use and not all its parents. (Skill points will still be inherited by the parents.)

    - Stealing heavy items is now more difficult. It is also harder to steal large quantities of items.

    - “Activating” a book will no longer automatically cancel the book you are reading. To start reading a new book you must first open the book-window and click "stop".

    - More skills will now require you to first read a book to learn them.

    ------ BUG FIXES ------

    General:

    - Fixed a bug that caused a crash when creating a Thursar.

    - Fixed a crash that occurred when dismounting.

    - Fixed many issues with Flagging and Stealing, it should now work a lot better.
