Buying a new gaming desktop (maybe) - need advice on companies

GameMonger71GameMonger71 Member UncommonPosts: 122

Before I start.  I know I could build one for less.  I do not want to honestly.  With that said, I am considering these 3 companies but would be open to others as well:

Velocity Micro (my current desktop is from them).  It is a pretty good system.  I still debate on the need to upgrade.  My current system does okay.  It has a 2.4GHz dou Core processor, 4GB DDR2 RAM, a 500GB 7200rpm hardrive and a 8800GTS vid card with 512MB RAM.  I had a few issues with my original system but they eventually solved the problem and fixed the system.

Would you recommend an upgrade based on these specs or should I stay with this a bit longer as new technology lowers in cost.   Maybe I will just replace the vid card again and get a Radeon 5850.  Thoughts?

Falcon Northwest - my previous computer was from these guys.  I really like the company but they are expensive!!!  I get the Talon products instead of the Mach V but the costs are still very high.

Digital Storm - no experience with these guys but they seem solid.  Anyone have an opinion?

Any advice on my need to upgrade or on which company to look at would be appreciated.

Thanks!

hold off your new system buy,and wait for intel 32nm precessor system
should be in store very soon ,they will have graphic card imbeded in the processor
and since they release the cheap version first it shouldnt be expensive

    32nm processor hardcore (high end)
wont be released till later this year since intel plan on having faster graphic card then nvidia and ati but in their processor.(men cant wait to see these monster)

Depends on the RAM DDR3 is constantly dropping whilst older DDR2 is on the rise after bottoming out in price mid 2009.

To the OP theres not really any game out there that you are going to wring a mass performance increase out of by upgrading at this time if every frame truly matters then by all means do so but I wouldnt call it a necesity especially with so much tech just around the corner Nvidia 3 series that will drive down Ati prices etc and other components prices continually falling.

By holding of you could probably put together a dual DX11 GPU with solid state disc drive i7 setup in 9 months time for the price you could do a lesser system for now.

I recommend Newegg, they have delivered good stuff for a long time.

As for if is the right time to upgrade, that is a question for the OP. There are a lot of good stuff coming out soon  New processors and hopefully Nvidias 300 cards also. On the other hand is there always cool stuff coming up, a friend of mine had a really pathetic computer because he wanted the best and spent 2 years waiting for the next stuff even though he had lots of money.

No matter how long you wait will something better always show up. or some components will drop in price the day after you bought it. That is how computers work, you have to look on what is coming and what you have to make a good decision.

And only you can decide if you should wait or buy it now.

Get a good screen... that is all i can recomend, i dont see anything in your hardware that urgently needs upgrading. Possibly  DDR3 motherboard, but the top end DDR2 is still faster than the cost equivalent DDR3.

For a new video card, wait about 6 months as nvidia has some stuff coming up.

I can't comment on the companies you've mentioned as I'm from Australia. However you're almost always better off buying your parts from a variety of sources and looking for the best deal. Your concern with brands should be the components themselves (Asus, Intel etc) rather than retailer.

With what you've listed I'd upgrade the video card or rebuild when the prices drop as other have mentioned.

    this:  www.hardcorecomputer.com

call them and they will custom build the way you want even for options not listed on the configurator.

you want a most badazz rig right?

I read some of the comments here and wanted to state the obvious. Prices will always go down as new technology gets made.  You can buy now and enjoy your new computer or wait months and enjoy it then.

As for which site to buy from I also suggest newegg.com, they have some very good deals and great pre-built computers.

Well, there is another upgrade that would make the computer faster and more silent: a SSD harddrive. I run 4 X-25 myself raided together with Raid 5, a very large difference to a regular spinning harddrive.

But you are probably right, to wait until Nvidia releases their next gen, then compare it to ATIs and get the best card is probably the best. The DDR3 memories will hardly be noticed compared to the old, a next gen GFX card will, the 8800 was a great card at it's time but things have changed a lot since then.

I would say most of the gear is good for another 2 years with a SSD drive and a state of the art GFX card. But that is of course up to the OP, some people have more money and others and if you spend a lot of time in front of the computer it is nice to have a good one.

Some of my own specs are top notch while others are rather old, isn't a game I can't max out anyways.

I have a Quad Intel 2.66 /1333 FSB), 4 gb DDR2, GTX 295, 4 raided Intel X-25 SSD drives (and a few TB of media drives) and a 750 W Corsair PSU. It is not the greatest computer out here but with the GFX card and really fast harddrives does it deliver surprisingly good. If you choose which parts to put the money in you will get the best performance for the bucks.

Hey, I already said both of those things a bit up.

You want a new computer?! Your current system only look like it's two years old tops. If your motherboard supports SLI, I would just add another 8800 GTS.
