Games like Darkfall?

RarinorRarinor Member Posts: 7

I'm getting pretty bored with WoW and all of the quest grinders that spawned as a result of it's success. The things that were fun in vanilla WoW and Everquest are gone now and any real effort now just boils down to large time investments.

I'm looking for any modern MMO with a focus on exploration and open ended personal development.

I chose my title because everyone knows what Darkfall is. My only problem with it is the seriously dated engine.

What games can I choose from that are huge, open ended, and throw you into the maw with nary a clue as to what to do?

I'm not that picky.

EVE.  Be sure to skip the tutorial, then you'll really see what "not a clue" means.

Funny you should suggest that, because just minutes ago I was wondering to myself if it was possible to skip the EVE tutorial.

Mortal Online, if it doesnt crash and burn (like DF at launch)

Could go oldschool and try out planetside, as it seems like its "somewhat" similar to DFO (though i havent played DFO and thus cant say that for sure).  That said, it is older...otherwise EVE is definitely a fun game as well.

EVE is probably closest to what you're looking for, definitely.  Mortal Online is similar, though still in development.  If you like the fantasy setting and an open ended character, it may be worth looking into.  It has some of the best graphics out there, even with everything stuck on medium for the beta.  Also, Mortal's gameworld isn't *huge* yet.  It won't be for a while.

Mortal Online is the closest to DFO but when it releases who knows? You've got EVE as a sci-fi alternative but that must have an older engine than DFO. If you still have DFO try and use PS_1 (pixel shader 1) in video options, it trippled my FPS until I got a decent GPU.

The closest thing to Darkfall right now is Mortal. However, Mortal is its own entity, and has a totally different focus. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who liked Darkfall. It's also largely unfinished and only the core features are there at the moment.

To Agricola, didn't they update EvE's engine when they redid it graphically? They had to have, or at least the engine has been being updated regularly, I'm sure. It'd be just like the Unreal Engine. It's ages old, but they keep it updated with the times. ;)

AC darktide! Its got a REALLY dated engine and it uses a lot of UDP so if you have a crappy router it might not work properly. But the Darktide server is a good lesson in humility and AC's world has no guys with arrows over their head to give you a quest, you pretty much have to figure all that crap out yourself.

Quite frankly, DFO's graphics are far from Outdated. Players choose to remove many settings though to increase their performance.

    Here's a youtube video : www.youtube.com

And I advise you look at his two other videos, Skies Of DarkFall and The Hunt.

Back to subject though, Mortal Online is somewhat similar though no one really knows what's happening with the game. EVE (sci-fi) remains one of the best sandbox games on the market (if not the best).

You kinda have to if you want to survive. Not to mention the poor optimization causes any of the prettiness like shadows to turn the game into a slideshow. Yeah, my comp well exceeded the recommended, not just the minimum.

Right...and I don't get why people keep calling the people playing it or that bought it idiots. We really have no idea atm. EVE (sci-fi) remains one of the best sandbox games on the market (if not the best). EvE is just...well you either love it or hate it. I loved it. It drew me in. Knowing that most of my actions were on a timer until completed and I could do whatever I wanted while they were going bored the crap out of me. 20 minute travel times with no interaction (during the tutorial, even) were not my thing. That's not to say that there's not plenty to be found in that game. There is. =]

It is an off topic but I find graphic in MO to be more ugly then in Darkfall, the world feels completely devoid of life and uninspired. I suppose that's the way early beta feels. The problem is they want to launch in few weeks...

It won't though. Don't even begin to think it will launch soon. Sure, it's making it there but they keep breaking things with each thing they fix. Not as much as they fix, mind you, but it's slowing progress.

Also, it feels devoid of life because there aren't any mobs half the time. xD

Yeah its going to take some serious investment to get MO to a playable game. It reminds me a hell of a lot of AC and I want a game like that with updated graphics really badly but I digress. I would love to see that game progress to a good level so I could play it with a bunch of people.

Reminds me of DFO ... Will get flamed to hell for this though.

Another thing I don't get, people keep mixing the terms playable and enjoyable. Mortal is completely playable. It runs fluidly for me and I find very few issues other than what they break after each patch, which gets fixed in reasonable time...before the bugs that are constantly being ignored from ages ago...

The thing is...Mortal isn't really enjoyable yet. It needs to boost its PvE, balance things out, make skilling up less of a Runescape-eque grind, get rid of the stupid pushing that's getting used for noob tactics and make it easier to notice a thief...and a bit more.

Nah, believe me I played DF beta and I have played MO beta. DF was in much better state then MO.
