i think at first guild wars will take a ton of players away from current MMOs, after a while a lot of people will get bored because of its linearity (just what i've heard) and either return to their games or hop on to DnL. DnL is a game that might not start out with a massively massive amount of players, but will slowly grow as more and more people realize how great it is.
there is also the chance of not enough content to fill up the notoriously expansive lands of DnL, or the devs making the mistake of leaving out some of the key elements of the game claiming they will "add it in a later patch".
just my guesses, only time will tell
Make of it what you will.
I hope Tabula Rasa does.
Richard Garriot and Co has some great ideas on how to make a MMORPG experience as self as a single individual would have while playing a single player RPG. Id also like to see him one up Brad over at Sigil if anything.

I would like to see D&D online fail just because I honestly fail to see how it will be any better then what is already in the works or being released. On the other hand, I would really like to see MEO survive and become a virtual Mecca for all those little "hypocritical hardcore role-players" that won't let you get a single word in, or advance the story in any way that I would consider "fun".
I see good things for WoW, DnL, Fallen Earth and perhaps FoM too.
Hype breeds disappointment.
All speculation of course, but Mourning sounds promising.
May not appeal to the masses, but who cares as long as enough people subscribe to keep it operational and it owns for me.

I understand what you mean, but you can't stop living, its sad if you can't get excited just because your scared you will get hurt.
Would you never fall in love again just because you had a run of bad luck?... I hope not... if you never allow yourself to feel and be be at the mercy of fate, you are already dead, and your just counting time.
Get excited now, and be alive, let the future take care of itself.
WoW looks awesome but im 12 lol and i cant really afford all that
so ill stick to free mmorpgs does anyone know any good ones with a good PvP system?
How wonderful you bring this up.
Living in the moment means specifically that: you do not paint a picture of what you expect a moment to be. To fully appreciate all that life has to offer you must be open to what joys and sorrows it brings, and predetermination is a greater poison to that than apathy is.
So if you wish to "be alive" and "get excited now" then I suggest investing attention and time into that which is now and not to paint caricatures of expectations for what the future will bring.
Each game will appeal an audience, I think Guild Wars, DnL(definitly), and Auto Assault will definitly take away subscribers.

Nothing
I have checked out a lot of games now and I have to say that DnL will sweep a lot of players away from other games.
It has a very unique and high quality visual look. It has a huge world and from some of the screens and descriptions it has some very unique sites. I could honestly go on and on but most importantly it has some completely new and unseen things. It will if nothing else be one of the most innovative MMORPGs ever.
Your information is flawed and incorrect. WoW did NOT make a majority of games lose subscribers. What WoW did was introduce some of the millions of Blizzard fans to the world of MMORPGs. WoW the MMORPG simply reeled in Blizzard fans who had never ever played a MMORPG ever before.
Next, no MMORPG has ever owned, or will ever own. UO was "big" because there was nothing else on its level to play. EQ was "big" because there was nothing else on its level to play. Right now at current time, the industry is saturated with medieval-themed mmorpgs (mostly level based), and a few sci-fi themed mmorpgs.
There is a market for everything:
- PvP (PvP for landcontrol, almost FFA PvP, consentual PvP)
- Zoneless PvE (See AC1, SWG)
- MMORPGs with zones (See EQ)
- MMORPGs with almost no zones aka super huge zones (See AO)
- Level Based MMORPGs (See EQ)
- Skill Based MMORPGs (See SWG)
- Loot Based Economy (See EQ)
- Player Based Economy (See SWG)
What is needed is a new medieval-themed MMORPG that is 100% skill based. That would be the next new thing that would make big waves. Perhaps the mighty VANGUARD? Who knows.
