What does this message mean in the windows media player?
Hi Friends,
I was trying to watch a movie saved on my harddisk using the media player,i was not able to watch it cos the player is showing the following message-"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."What does it mean and what can i do about it,i had got my comp formated few days back,could it be related to that?

Well, it might help if you provided your Windows version and Media Player version, but if I had to hazard a guess, when your computer was re-formatted, the sound card drivers weren't reinstalled, or they weren't installed properly.
It may also be related to the type of media file you were trying to play. If it was a DVD file, if you don't have a DVD media codec installed, that could also be an issue.
I would suggest right clicking on My Computer on the desktop (for Windows XP and Vista) or right-clicking on Computer in the Start Menu sidebar and selecting "Properties".
Then select "Device Manager" (or Hardware and then Device Manager) and find your Sound, video and game controllers. Expand that setting and check to see if there is a red X over your sound device. If the option can't be expanded, that means the system hasn't recognized the sound card on your system.
Check that first and respond to this post, if you are still having the issue. Also, if you could provide more details about your computer, OS, and Media Player version, that would provide critical information for people trying to help you.
