Bards

I am just curious how many games out there that consist of a Bard, or a bardlike class. On the top of my head, the only games I know have this particular class is Everquest and their "sequel," Everyquest II. It was a bummer to not see WoW not have this, but maybe they'll add it? we'll see. Anyways...What other MMORPGs out there have this particular class? Am just curious how well-known this class is. Thanks in advance.

    I know ony one game

    Dark Age of Camelot

    General Class Description

Keepers of Song, the Minstrels of the realm of Albion provide many helpful services to their realm-mates. They are capable of many tasks, including crowd control, direct damage, increased run speeds, and much more. They find themselves in the position of being good at many things, but gods at nothing. Holding these valuable skills proves great worth in the fight against monsters and enemies in other realms.

The Minstrel's run speeds makes them and their group-mates very hard to catch in the frontier. As a defensive mechanism, groups will seek out Minstrels in hopes of having this ability to outrun the enemy and to travel to their destinations much quicker than most. That's just one of several reasons that groups would seek out a Minstrel.

Minstrels have many offensive and defensive abilities, though they rely heavily on their songs to stay alive. They must play instruments when performing musical pieces, unlike their Skald counterparts in Midgard. Minstrels derive from the rogue classes of Albion. They have many similarities to the Infiltrator class in that they have the ability to stealth and sneak around their enemies whenever they are in danger. Though they have these similarities, they are not nearly as strong as the Infiltrator when it comes to hiding.

Ah I nearly forgot, SWG ofcourse!

    The entertainer guy...

Wait ill give you the info

    Star Wars Galaxies Entertainer
The Entertainer is fun filled profession that is best used around other players. They can provide healing for ailments that other characters have. They are not strong warriors but are quick and have strong mental attributes.

The Entertainer profession is encouraged to join with others of the same profession as they can form groups or bands. Entertainers can dance and use a number of different moves. They can play instruments and a number of different songs with each instrument. There are also flourishes which are special moves performed using the instruments. An entertainer can also conduct Image Design which allows it to change the appearance of another character.

Dancing and playing instruments are best used in specially designated places such as theaters, hotels, cantinas and camps. Playing just anywhere will not always result in XP and healing for other players. Entertainers rely mostly on the charity of other players to earn money, though they also can take on missions to earn credits.

An Entertainer can advance to the elite professions of Dancer, Musician, or Image Designer.

Ragnarok Online also has bard.  They're really good in that game, but most of their skills are ensembles which means you gotta have a dancer (female version of bard) with you that has the skill as well to use them...

It all began with the 2nd best selling RPG series in computer game history - Bard's Tale. Which came out in the early or mid 1980's. Right after Ultima II came out. Decades before EverQuest was even a thought in McQuaid's and Smeadly's brains.

(Ultima was the 1st best selling RPG series in computer game history.) It would be NICE if a Bard's Tale MMORPG were made heheheh... look at how great Utima the MMORPG did.

Anyway, there IS a brand new Bard's Tale modern stand alone RPG being made right now. For all you Bard's Tale fans out there who are still alive, it is not a sequel to Bard's Tale III. It is just a regular stand alone game. But in the tradition of the Bard's Tale games, you can do things that are... umm... not exactly what a hero would do, should do. LOL!

(Try to move your mouse over an onto the lady's chest to get an idea of the humor the Bard's Tale games are known for LOL!)

SWG right now has the best ever "bard" profession ever made in a MMORPG. AC2 first made the attempt in the direction SWG went (check out my AC2 screenshots entitled "Music Jam Session"). SWG went all the way. In SWG it is called the Muscian profession. Not the Entertainer. Entertainer is a general profession that leads to more specialized professions like Dancer, Muscian, etc...

Unlike EQ, EQII, and perhaps all other MMORPGs, any player in SWG can become a Muscian, since each character can learn 3 1/2 professions. (In AC2 any player can play instruments, but alas playing music in AC2 has zero benifits. That's why I call what AC2 did just an attempt.)

    Alright, so we've got:

    Everquest/Everquest II
    Dark Age of Camelot
    Final Fantasy XI
    Star Wars Galaxies
    Ragnarok Online

There are so many games out there, yet only a handful of them consist of such a class. Did/Have you ever tried playing a bard? Were you fond of the bard-class? Why/whynot?

Personally, I enjoyed my bard in Everquest, mainly because they were so fun to play. They could just do abit of everything, solo (kite), melee, and could run faster (this was always a plus, in my mind.) I just wish other games out there had classes such as the bard. Think WoW will come out with a new class like this?

Me personally, one of my EQ friends was into Bard's. He played very well. I even have a screenshot of him being chased by a dragon. (Another friend took the screenshot. I saved it.) I just never had time to check out Bards in EQ. I wanted to experience the extreems of the game. Playing a Shadowknight Ogre, and an Elf Paladin for examples.

The problem with other games is this:

Their game makers, almost all of them, rely only on Tolkien as source material. D&D also. But D&D is heavily influcence by Tolkien. It really is amazing what Everquest did by having sooo many class selections. Even now only SWG comes closest to the incredible amount of selections and choices EQ has. I remember on the old SWG forums the SWG game DEVs posting their experiences playing Bard's Tale I, Bard's Tale II, and Bard's Tale III.  Maybe we need more game DEVs to spend a few months playing the ultra-classic computer games that built the RPG industry. Games like Bard's Tale. So they'll know about other source material for .... Bards! imageimageimageimageimageimageimage

D&D online will have bards, maybe not at release, but they cant keep them out.  (no idea if at release or not).
