Will all FPV keep me from playing? Absolutely. Why? because, ive played tons of games in first person, and its all the same crap. Get ganked from behind with no time to turn around and counter attack, then die. Yeah... tons of fun there...
They should take a hint from Fallout 3 and just make the viewmode manually toggleable. Let people choose their preferred view and get off the oblivion ripoff bandwagon.
first person is actually a big plus in my opinion. i can only remember a few games which took that approach and i really liked them a lot because it does allow more immersion. though i do hope that you also have a chance to look at your character from a third person view sometimes, like in a mirror or something now that's realism.
What "first person" and what to "keep" me from MO? if you mean "Will first person view keep you away from MO?" Then I answer No. Not only no, but first person view is my favorite views for a RPG as best RPGs are already FPV: Elder Scrolls and Might& Magic series.

It will absolutely keep me from playing the game. My family genetics cursed me with a severe motion sickness problem and playing in First Person makes me dizzy.
That sucks, but I have the same worry when it comes to the resource gathering animations I've seen in vids. That looks like a potential migraine for me.

I'm more of a third-person type player, but I'm more turned off by a design philosophy that doesn't give players a choice, but if they got a free trial, I'll check it out.

can you explain, who doesn't give you a choice? in what way?

Mortal online, it is first person view all the time. However first person view is a feature
I am also cursed with motion sickness while playing FPS. Darkfall and MO both look really interesting to me, but I don't feel like getting sick playing them
All fantasy MMORPG's should have the option of 1st person and 3rd person views. It's just how it's always been since the original Everquest! Personally, I enjoy being able to watch my character as I play. But there are times I'd use 1st person view, such as while taking a picture of a newly discovered awesome looking mob, gazing at a beautiful landscape, or sometimes while exploring new areas.. But most "veteran" fantasy based MMO gamers will stay away from MO simply because there is no 3rd person view option..
Friends, family, and old guildies like the concept of MO, but not having a 3rd person view turned them and myself away from the game.. It's like wearing two different color shoes. Most people prefer to wear a pair of shoes that are the same color. But there are those who take after punky Brewster, *shrug*
What bothers me the most about MO and some of the other MMO's that have launched the last few years is these companies are trying to combine FPS elements with MMORPG elements to try and score a big hit with both fans of each genre. But there has never been a successful MMOFPS Hybrid game... And, I seriously doubt MO will please both FPS and veteran MMORPG gamers.. Their going to get the whinny illiterate FPS fans but barely any traditional fantasy MMORPG fans...
It's a shame to because MO actually sounded pretty solid. I won't touch it unless a 3rd person view is implemented.

In all mmorpg FPV is only an addon. Nobody plays in this mode for real. It gives no advantage as tpv.
As it goes about pleasing veteran mmorpg gamers, start with UO pre trammel, as those who were playing it, are veterans of mmorpg gaming. Not cookie cutters who touched mmorpg genre because of wow, claiming all further upcoming games are its clones. Traditional RPGs were only FPV (do you recall any amiga rpgs ? like dungeon master ) until blizz came up with hacks & slashes.
Anyway, I'm very pleased that FPV is the only mode in this game.
btw. you misinterpreted fps with fpv term. MO isnt a fast paced medieval shooter with insta fireballs along with zero ping arrows.

Initially when playing the game, I thought that FPS could work out if the developers had a good vision set upon it, and if it proved to be deep and tactical for the game.
It simply isn't. FPS is not suited for an MMO unless of course the game is Global Agenda or something -- and even THEY have a third person view. MO's combat is pretty much like playing Age of Chivalry, except it's way laggier, out of sync, slower, clunkier, and not as much fun. Otherwise, largely the same experience. And in the same way that Age of Chivalry fails to capture my imagination as a good PvP game, beyond it being a simple deathmatch type of game -- is exactly how MO fails. But this is a core design decision, and one they want to stick with -- so their fate will ultimately be decided by that.
Time will tell how it works out for them, but given the large amounts of complaints about the game's subpar PvP well... I have an inclination to think it won't work out well for them.

Sweet, hope you enjoy killing the same 50-100 people everyday because thats roughly how many people will be in game after the first week of it's highly anticipated dreadful launch
I played UO pre Trammel in 1998.. I loved UO for it's complete freedom to do as you wish. I loved the skill based system, player houses, castles, ability to buy a boat and fish in the ocean hoping to score big, and that game felt as if i was in a real live medieval world.. It's a shame the only thing going for UO is it's freedom to do anything you wish. It's like playing Second life or sims, lol.. I quit UO for EQ in 2000 and never looked back. Of course, my cousin and his friend still dabble with it from time to time. Just the other day, he asked me to play it again with him and my friend. I said, there's no way in hail I'd ever play that game again simply because I've been there, done that, and moved on 9 years ago..
Anyway, I'm a true mmo vet.. Even UO had a birdseye view and that is technically the first real MMORPG ever to be released.. There has NEVER been a true traditional "MMORPG" releaed with only a FIRST PERSON VIEW feature without having a THIRD PERSON VIEW feature implemented.. This is just one reason why MO will be a failure at launch

Ah this is 1st person only? A pity, and i was just getting interested. I have motion sickness so i give it no chance.
"Traditionally, massively multiplier online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars combat, exploration and character progression. In Alganon, in addition to these we've added the fourth pillar to the equation: Copy & Paste."
Hell yeah! I played fps game my whole life and MO wont stop my record. Did you try to play oblivion without using the third person view option once? If yes, you will get use to MO.
And im sorry for al you guys, but there will never be a TPV option. WHY? Because if they add one, us the fpv players, we will all get an handicap, forcing us to play TPV instead and we dont want that unfair advantage in MO. We want FPV.
mandatory FPV sucks. it's not realistic, it's not immersive, it's just annoying. switching between FPV and TPV darkfall-style is significantly better, and IMO he best way to go is manually switchable FPV/TPV for everything, with the TPV being a vry tight, Darkfall-style behind the head TPV.
FPV is of course just 1 of numerous issues this game has. lack of anything approaching release quality features or content being the biggie, but also: broke developers, alpha quality release plans, dodgy/scamming pay for beta attitude, fundamental bugs in core game systems, laggy, crappy PVP, the list goes on and on.
I won't be able to play MO due to the FPV. I have never enjoyed a game that forced me to play in FPV only. They eventually start making me sick especially when in dungeons or buildings. I would love to try this game based on the features the company has stated it will have.
Yes, FPV is a game breaker for me. I don't know why but I just dont have the eye hand coordination to play in FPV, I got lost and turned around easy and due to this I'd be easy prey for PvPers, and the game would be no fun for me.. I am passing on this one.
Yeah definitely not my cup of tea. I got into games with Doom, and was solidly into first person point of view games for a while, but since playing MMOs I've come to appreciate that actually third person is more immersive, overall, except in certain situations.
IOW, it's a kind of mistake to think of fpv as more immersive. The only time it's more immersive is when the in-game situation mirrors an irl situation in which your vision would be limited to a "tunnel" - basically, fpv is immersive in a "dungeon" situation where you have little situational awareness and are limited (and would be limited irl) to what's in front. Also, any situation in which fear is the key aspect benefits from tunnel vision, because the restriction of situational awareness to what's directly in front of you ("tunnel vision" strictly so-called) is mirrored by fpv.
In every other type of situation, our eyes are constantly scanning all around us, we are looking around us all the time, quite unconsciously, unconsciously building a model of what's around us, including what's behind us, and we in fact have a situational awareness of much more than what's directly in front of our eyes. In fact our brains model "me+world" in a third person sort of way.
The only downside of third person in games is that sometimes you can see around corners - and that isn't realistic, and doesn't mirror anything irl.
The ideal is simply to be able to switch between the two at will - i.e. mousewheel enables you to zip into first person whenever you want, or zoom right out. IMHO this should actually be standard in every game these days (it's standard in many AAA MMOs that I'm aware of now).
I've seen the devs' argument that the gameplay is integrated around first person, so they won't change it. Any game developer that takes that point of view (of restricting player choice based on an idea of ideal gameplay) is starting off on the wrong foot altogether. All content should be designed to be playable from either perspective. And yes, of course it's harder to do that, but it has to be done.
So, right off the bat, this type of restrictive "auteur" (in the pejorative sense) decision rings warning bells for me.

Obviously I haven't played it, nor plan to, but I don't think they can pull off the IRL tunnel vision. Because IRL if you get hit in the back, you feel which part of your back was hit and know what direction to turn to face the person that hit you.. In a game if you get hit say left side of the back, you can't tell and if you turn right, your enemy can continue to circle with you on the left.

Well I use to get my eyes up above me all the time when I'm out clubbing. Then I see all the chicks better at the place and it is much more realistic than fpv. ;o) I was also concerned in the beginning. But after an hour or two I got used to it and I enjoy it. Dare to try anything different, it might open your eyes up! ^^
