I read in an interview FFXIV is going to continue using 'level sync'. I quit FFXI before they implemented it, so my opinion isn't based on experience, but I'm not exactly sure I really like the idea. What are your thoughts?

What's to hate? In a game where the 1-30 level zones became barren over time, they allowed players to drop their lvls down to a noob's in order to help him. Fairly sure they get XP for it still, since in FFXI an equal fight is 50 xp regardless of the level, not fully sure on that though. Just fairly sure dropping to a lower level did that, I never went back in order to experience it.

Good of them if they do it so everyone can party together regardless of "level".
Can you link the article? I'm just interested in reading.
From what we know there are no levels so 'level sync' (a process where the higher level characters are synced down to the target players level so they can all exp together) is not really necessary. Will there be progression and will the progression stop someone who had played everyday for 4 years from playing with someone who signed up today? I don't believe it will from what we know. The idea behind level sync was a fix so everyone can work together, however I think this is already the idea the FFXIV will be going towards naturally.
I just hope it doesnt lead to some form of exploit.

Why so nit picky? Theres going to be weapon levels, that very well could work just like character levels in terms of who parties.
Edit: It makes no sense to me that a person with a level 2 lance will be working together with a level 50 sword to complete an importan guildleve that the level 50 sword is working on. It makes perfect sense that with level sync that the level 50 sword could help the level 2 spear and the level 50 sword will get something from it.

Good point. I didn't even think about that. Not sure why/how they could use level sync with no levels. But here's where I read it, the question is in the "In-Game Details And Mechanics" section.

This seems like the optimal solution if implemented correctly. Since there are no player "levels", weapon skills reduced by a percentage equal to the area/zone the lower player is in would be the logical step.
The Level Sync I personally believe is going to be built into the Armoury system and/or each zone individually. So when you enter Zone A with say a lance that is at skill 50, but the mobs in that zone only give skill up to 30, you won't gain any more skill from those while you're solo. Then maybe you can switch to any of the other weapons that may be lower skill and use them and gain skill.
However if you should decide to join a party with other players, maybe your skill will drop temporarily to the avg of the parties weapons skill, and you may still be able to gain a bit of skill to your actually 50+ that you're lance is at; just like the current level sync in FFXI works towards your char lvl.
When you leave the party u get returned to normal. SE did say that mob level or skill will be fixed per zone too, so I'm onto something here!
until we know how the combat and progression actually works, cant really say much.
