To everyone debating whether this is acceptable or not:
Save Costume.
It's a button that I do not see here, but I remember it from Champions Online.
If there was a Save Costume button, I could reload my character, finish making him look right, and not waste another two hours trying to race against the disconnect clock.
Meh - the real problem here is expectations. Remember when you used to have to sign up for *any* beta, and you had to fill out a long questionnaire, and hope for a chance to play? And the whole time you went through this process, the company made it extremely clear the expectations of beta? That it probably would be laggy. That it would probably be buggy. That you probably would have problems logging in. That you probably would invest 10 hours into getting an item only to have it disappear 10 minutes later due to a programming glitch. It's beta. Open. Closed. Whatever you call it, it's still beta, and it's just a case of expectations not being clearly defined beforehand. I don't blame any posters coming here and complaining about their experience, because it's not their fault; it's STO. They are trying to make money by offering beta keys for pre-orders (as is the norm now). IMO it's a terrible way to beta test, and any company that does this deserves being flamed, and deserves taking a chance of pissing so many people off that it actually hurts it's initial chances of early success. I may be wrong here, but going back to my point, those who are in beta today, how many are there to play STO and how many are there to beta test STO? I'd guess the majority leans towards those who bought the game and want to play STO, not beta test. And there's the problem - missed expectations. The company is using the beta testers as TESTERS and the players are using the game as PLAYERS. Those two things don't add up. Again, any company that does this deserves what it gets. I'm not on either side of the fence with STO - if it is a success, great. If not, no big deal to me. It's just a fact that this model of beta testing is set up for failure. Keep an eye on the posts coming out over the next few days, and you'll see many examples of this.
Sorry this is not exactly the case. The game ships 3 weeks today, you will not see any significant changes. Open Betas are at most a stress test on login etc and a showcase for the up coming release. Anyone who thinks they are providing valuable feed back at this final hour are delusional. The pin has been pulled, the fuse lit, the countdown begun.
Remember AoC? The screams of "it's BETA you N0o0o0o0B". Exactly.
Fully expected this , typically open beta syndrom.
I get more annoyed that people dont chill when its not working and seeing if other people have the same problem so they create thread when its already been created with someone having same problem.
when playing beta if its cb or ob or whatever always, always expect crashes or whatever problem anyone not expecting servers and such behave badly the first 3-4days doesnt belong in a beta im sorry to say.

Actually significant changes can and sometimes still happen even with a week to go before the actual launch. Its not something new and has been done before.
Ever notice that huge patch on launch day? Thats all the extra fixes and changes that are made after the game has been sent to printing. Sure in some cases, like AoC, the devs ignore everything the testers try to tell them about the state of the game, but it doesnt mean that other companies will.
But yeah, Open Beta is still part of the beta process. Bugs will be found, servers will crash and some features may be horribly broken. The whole point of this last phase is to make sure that as many of these issues can be found and squashed before the actual launch of the game. Open Beta isnt always going to be a pretty or fun experience, but then again its not 'supposed' to be. Its not a demo.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
I pre-ordered the beta to evaluate the game for a later purchase. I pre-ordered thru Game Stop for $5. If I decide not to purchase the game when it is released, Game Stop will refund my $5 so there is really no risk to me. I know this is a beta, but Cryptic has got to realized there are a lot of players like myself. This is not only a beta test for Cryptic, but an evaluation test for many would be purchasers.
I managed to create a character but when i try to go online it connects to the server, then tries to get into the Financial District. After that it says loading and disconnects me. What do i do?

Check the STO technical issues forum and see if there is a known issue or workaround. If you can't find a post about it, then start a new thread and maybe someone there can help you out.

When you open 'testing' to people who have paid for the priviledge, they are going to want to play, not test.
If my download ever finishes (25 hours remaining), I intend to test stuff, and post on it.

^ I was able to resolve each and every issue I had with STO by dropping that game like a bad habit.
