Wizard 101: Players Raise $126,000 for Children's Charity

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

From December 14th, 2009 through January 5th, 2010 players have been able to purchase a "Meowmodon" mount in Wizard 101, with developer KingIsle promising to donate 100% of the proceeds to two children's charities, namely the Austin Children's Center and Child's Play.

Today, we've learned that the Wizard101 community were able to raise $126,000 through the duration of the charity promotion period. At $15 a pop, that works out to 8,400 Meowmodons sold! Clearly, cats rule, and dogs drool.

Go here for the full announcement.

That's the way you ask your players to participate in a charity. 100% of the proceeds.  Not the measly 5% of an item that has had it's price increased 400% like Atlantica Online did.

I agree. Also, it's a fantastic game for adults as well. I'm an old school table top D&D'er who cut his mmorpg teeth on M59, UO and EQ1, and I am absolutely loving this game at 39 :)

Great job everyone involved! This is a great achievement and very selfless. I am glad that i recently found this game.

This is exactly what I came in here to say :)

See, this is how it should be done. As someone who has worked with deprived children the past year, I am truly grateful for W101.

I mean, 100%? not only does that take guts, but man, that's almost unheard of in this market.

Sure you don't wanna look up definitions and change that to "deprived"?

    Absolutely well done.

Hell, I don't even remember the last time I heard of any corporation helping any charity at 100% of profits.

Who would have thought videogames would end up making massive donations for needy children.

Not profits... "all proceeds from the sales going to the two charities"

    That's an important difference.

Because that means that KingsIsle made a loss on the artwork and animations etc to get these mounts in game.

Proceeds is far more generous than profits.

(I mention this BTW - because some businesses only donate 'profits' and after they take their 'expenses' out there is little charity there.)

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.

Or 50% like with Blizzard. 100% or you're just trying to make a buck off of what should be a good deed.

    Congrats Wizard101!

Or 200% like SOE, who for every ChildsPlay item bought for $5, SOE adds another $5 for a total of $10 that goes to the charity.
