STO: Technical Issue

KatillaKatilla Member UncommonPosts: 829

i am going to repost this here to see if anyone else had the same issue i did...

Now i am forced to write this from my 5 year old laptop....

so i was all happy to wait for the beta servers to open at 1pm EST, i logged in and started creating my character....bright green flash of light and my power supply blew... No big deal im thinking, prolly just some dust short circuited it or something... So i go to work, and then come home and go to bed, thinking ill just play on my g/f's computer on my day off... So it is now my day off, started up the client, patched, then went into character creation.... SAME SECTION during changing my body proportions, POP her power supply blows...

Now i'm ****ed, so i take out her power supply to look at it and it's perfectly clean and pretty new... It seems like something is overloading the voltage on BOTH computers during character creation and causing the power supplies to blow up... I have ordered 2 new power supplies and and waiting for them to come in the mail, but i am now afraid to play this game.

both computers are on different outlets

one has windows 7, the other windows XP

one has a dual core, the other a quad core

one has a 8800GTX, the other 9600GTX

two different power supplies 500w , 600w

two different motherboards

one has 4gb of ram, the other has 3gb

i checked both cases, and there is no dust in either of them because i take really good care of them

wtf?

Sounds like you had a run of bad luck, both power supplies going out like that. Hopefully your new ones will be more reliable but I doubt STO is to blame. Even at the most I don't think it could have demanded any more then the maximum required power by your hardware which your power supplies should have been able to cover.

This is why I recommend everyone with a computer uses a UPS which does far more than a simple surge protector and will keep your power supplies from burning out. They can be a little costly, one for a gaming rig will probably run you $150-200 based on your wattage, but its worth the investment. Youd be surprised how things like vacuum cleaners and printers can completely drain all the voltage running through the lines in your house and force your computer to work harder.

Based on the performance I got from it within the first 35 minutes before it locked up and and I had to Alt-F4 it, I'm not surprised.  Not like I was tempted to log back in, as I've already uninstalled, but thanks for the heads up anyways.

Wow. Just last night I had a dream about that happening to me. It didn't; but of course I have a 6600 video card so that is probably why.

Honestly just sounds like ba luck to me.  Honestly my computer is not all that great and I am running the game on all high settings just fine.  I get a little bit of visual stutter every now and then but for the most part it runs smooth.   I have:

    E8400

    4 GB DDR2 Ram

    650 W PS

    GTX 275

Also running Windows XP 32 bit, havent gotten 7 yet.

So its not that powerful of a computer and I have had no issues with STO thus far, and was in the last leg of closed beta.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

With the exception of the video card overheating and popping, there's not much a video game can do to fry a power supply.  You might do well to check your power outlet.

Also you might try unplugging all your outboard hardware(kb, monitor, mouse, etc) and try to boot up again.  I had a keyboard go bad that prevented my mobo from accepting power on commands from the switch.  Acted like the PS was blown.

In neither of those cases do you mention having surge protection on your systems.  There's a reason surge protectors exist. Also surge protectors do wear out over time. Cheap ones wear out far faster than good quality ones too. Good quality ones might last 5 years or a single nearby lightning strike. Cheap ones might last 6 months and some aren't worth using for anything more than as an extension cord.

All electronics today need surge protection.  If you value all of your electric stuff getting whole house surge protection installed by a professional electrician would be a good idea especially if you live in areas where a lot of thunderstorms pass through.

Bit late but make sure your power supply has RFI dampening/Noise dampening to prevent the dirty electricity from damaging your comp. Electronics are just way to sensitive now. The $15 or $40 surge protector doesn't cut it anymore.
