Hello,
I have requested help to find mmos here before and you guys have been a great help. If you aren't familier with me, I am currently stuck playing free to play games due to bad economic situation. (married, have a kid, etc etc..) I have been playing Runes of Magic off and on and I am bored with it. I enjoy it more than I did WoW for the few months I played it--I did not care for WoW. The reason WoW clones and Runes of Magic type games aren't fun for me is that it seems to be the same thing over and over again.
To be blunt I am looking for soemthing different. I really enjoy sandbox mmos, UO is still my favorite MMO of all time, I have tried private servers but the community is just too small and the world of UO is just too big to be enjoyable. I have looked into playing Spellborn but it does not run right on my comptuer, even after trying some fixes the game still lags like crazy. The reason acclaim gave me for this is that my computer is too new and the game isn't quite compadible with it. This frustrated me quite a bit. They also blamed my internet connection, which is by no means slow, and the lag I was getting was FPS lag not internet lag.
ANYWAYS.....
Can someone recommend a decent f2p game that isn't a WoW clone? Please help. I am currently trying 9 Dragons because I wanted to try a martial arts game but to be honest it is point in click WoW in China... Also please do not recommend a private UO server to me they are not allowed to be spoken of on these forums, I found that out the hard way many many moons ago.
Thanks,
Dustin

I have one suggestion while it's not free or a fantasy mmo fallen Earth is a very good mmo that is as different from wow as you can get and still be on land. Eve online is another mmo that is like night and day from wow but it's not for everyone. As far as fantasy mmo go i think wow has corrupted them all or almost all of them anyway.
Do some research into Darkfall. Might be right up your alley.
I recommend DDO, free to play, fantasy based and quite a bit different from traditional MMO's a la WOW.

Hello,
If I could afford to pay to play a mmo, I would most likely play Saga of Ryzom but I can not It sucks being poor sometimes but it happens. Wife works full time to pay bills, i stay at home with our daughter because I can't find work, they say I am over qualified for everything I apply for. If I did work, it would just to pay for day care for the baby because the economy sucks around here right now. Plus people don't like to read on an application reason for leaving last job: brain surgery to fix stroke like symptoms on a 26 year old male Anyways I thought of trying fallen earth, it looks interesting but it does seem the fantasy MMO genre needs help to get away from the WoW era. I am hoping Final Fantasy XIV will do it. Not going to call it a WoW killer because WoW will still have its masses that love it because it is a easy fun theme park MMO..

---edit---
I have played DDO and it is okay for a MMO that is a single player mmo lol so to speak. It is fun and all but if I want to play D&D i'll call my buddies and play real D&D. To me DDO is a great game, I have even called it guild wars done right.
Play Spellborn, lol. Either that or wait for Altis Gates. They're the only F2Ps I can play atm.

I have tried a lot of free mmos and most of what I've tried had something to offer, but the most fun free mmo I've ever played was Soul of the Ultimate Nation. It has a nice character system and the weapon upgrades are pretty neat. I also like the fact that it's a game that you can get into quick, have some fun and get out. You don't have to invest any cash or a whole months worth of hours to have fun in.
My other favorites are the Perfect World games. Each one of their games has something special in them that will captivate you for hours, and I've found the graphics to be very impressive and run really clean and fast on a decent system.

Come again? Fallen Earth, fantasy? What? Do some more research. Heck, go look at their main page.
Edit: On a second read through, it seems you just misworded the sentence.
Dungeons and Dragons Online (non sub).
I have played Soul of the Ultimate Nation, while it was fun for a while the dungeons were all just repeats of maps. Also once again even though it isn't a direct WoW clone it is not the sandbox fun I am looking for. Also its community seems lacking to me. As for Spellborn, as I said it is a good game, I would enjoy it, if it would run properly on my computer. It doesn't. I get an ungodly slow FPS, Acclaim blames it my computer being too good for the game or my internet connection being too slow, I know it isn't my internet connection, I can play any MMO max settings and max resolution with no problems. It doens't matter about my spellborn settings I get slow FPS. I even tried some fixes for it and it does not run. Anyways I will keep my search up and I do like the suggestions keep them coming

f2p eh? Gates of Andaron maybe, or try to get into the Allods beta, heard good things about it. I didn't care for the combat in Atlantica, but you might like it.
Not a WoW clone, lol.

yes as i said not a wow clone please
Wurm?

I am going to second Dungeon and Dragons Online: Ebberon Unlimited.
Not a WoW clone, lol.
You're right, my bad, failed in paying attention. Atlantica still stands as a solid recommendation of non-WoW clone though
spellborn!
it's a nice game and completely free at the moment :-)

waiting for ... nothing..
Many people keep recommending spellborn and I keep saying how it DOES NOT run on my computer. I only get like 25 FPS no matter what my graphics settings are where as I can play any other MMO at full settings no lag or slow FPS at all. ANyways I would play Spellborn but I can not. DDO is not that bad of a game but in my midn it isn't that good of a game either. To me it is more of a lets meet in a hub and then go group together type game. No running into people while you are traveling, its all instanced. If I wanted D&D experience with my buddies we would get our dice out and game. Which we do bout once every two weeks heh. I guess I am too picky. I wish I had the money to play Ryzom lol, even if I did have the cash I wouldn't have the time lol. Well I must be going, I doubt anyone else has any other suggestions that anyone else hasn't said. I saw how Wurm was mentioned, once again I need a free to play game because we can barely afford our internet bill as it is, the reason I justify to my wife having the net is that I use it for my sermon research.
Thanks,
Dustin

Lego Universe! Even though WoW has ninjas, pirates, and space ships....
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.
Hello,
I know Face of Mankind is Sci-Fi but I am going to try it out, it looks different.
Dustin
Well, if you are going the space route, keep Anarchy Online in mind. A bit old but still a pretty decent game I hear.

I have thought of Anarchy Online several times but the whole game is not free... Only the first part of the game but none of the expansions if I remember correctly. Which I could see me getting to the point where I need to upgrade to a part of the game and need money to do so and well the wife say no, we need diapers etc etc etc..
Thanks for the suggestions,
Dustin
Is their a good free sci-fi game out there??
Well honestly it sounds like you are a little too picky for the F2P games on the market at this time. I know we all lament the poor quality of current MMOs, but that is the way it is right now. You will either have to shell out some cash each month for a sub, settle on an imperfect F2P, or just stick to single player games or a different hobbie for now. I really wish you could get Spellborn working on your PC, its a perfectly good game IMO too. You might give it another troubleshooting crack if your that hard up.
EVE Online. You don't need money to play it... I mean real money. And it's sandbox. But not fantasy though...
I Spellborn. I just wish the community were more talkative. I feel so alone in Hawksmouth. =[

You do to start playing. Plus, anyone planning on paying for EvE with in-game money better be prepared to work their asses off in-game.
