Skeptical at first...Honest Opinion of Game

stormseekazstormseekaz Member UncommonPosts: 168

So here is my MMORPG history, so you all dont think im some dumb noob.

NexusTK > UO > Everquest > SWG > EVE > EQ2 > WOW > Warhammer> AOC> Darkfall > Fallen Earth

I played many Free to play online rpgs inbetween, but that is the order in which games have held me for 6+ months, Wow and SWG being the longest with about 2 years for each of those.  Im sure im missing a few big ones in the list.  But my point is, I have played almost every type of MMO, and know whats good, whats themepark, whats sandbox, etc.

So I was playing Darkfall from release up until the beginning of fall.  It was a fun game for hardcore gamers but I maxed most of my skills out from grinding all summer and the game got boring / my guild dissolved etc etc.  So between Darkfall and Fallen Earth I had been playing Leage of Legends, not really an MMORPG but a great DOTA part 2.

I saw Fallen Earth on MMORPG since it was released and heard about it.  A fellow Darkfall guild mate said it sucked, so I didn't even bother to try the open beta key he lent me.  So the game puts out a 10 day free trial, which I was surprised by since it had only been out for 3 months.  It took me a long long time to download it and get it working, and there was a holiday sale going on, 25 bucks for it on steam.  So I said wtf ill take a gamble and purchased it without even having tried the game.  Just because 25 bucks with a free month is a damn good deal for a new MMO.

I am overjoyed I took that plunge.  This game is truly deserving of its top spot on the rating list on mmorpg.com.  It really is a great game.  It has all of the aspects of SWG I loved, a seamless non-instanced world the size of darkfall's.  Im estimating it'd take a good 2-4 hours to ride your mount from the top of Sector 3 to the very beginning of sector 1.  The crafting kind of like a mix between UO and SWG.  You really can play this game and only do crafting and harvesting and gain all your levels.  You can be a pure crafter or pure combat, or a mix.

The game was EXTREMELY exhausting at first.  There were so many items and a complex stat/skill system (compared to most MMORPGs).  It had a much longer learning curve than most games.  The first person shooter elements are easy to pick up, but the rest of the game took a while.  But after enduring that the game really proved its value.

The game has a F-ton of quests, they are all extremely unique.  I normally don't read the quest dialogue because its so pointless and tedious.  But I am treating this game the same way I played EQ2/SWG/Oblivion.  The quests are well done enough to immerse you in the world.  I tried to complete as many as I could in the first sector of the game but there were so many starter towns with tons that I eventually gave up and went off to further areas.  The game also gives players an insentive to do many quests all over the game by giving bonus Ability Points.

I wasn't going to write this review about how great the game was because I simply was just too lazy.  But after what just happened a few minutes ago I had to:

I was in a town called Watch Tower, in the later part of the first sector.  I saw a ladder going down into what looked like a sewer/fallout shelter type deal.  So I climb down there and see an undercover casino type deal.  I was like oh ok this is lame no quests here.  But I walk over to the BlackJack / Slot machines and to my amazement, they actually WORK!  They are really well done too.  You can actually bet a ton of money in them as well.

But anyways, the game is very well done, full, and polished.

There are many different types of vehicles like there was in SWG, the combat system and NPC AI reminds me mostly of Oblivion.  The questing reminds me of a mix between SWG and Warhammer.  The object models and textures in this game are really well done.  You can go into parking garrages and metal structures and it looks very smooth and detailed.  Nothing looks blocky or blurry textured.

The one thing that prevented me from liking this game right off the bat was the fact it was based in Nevada after the apocolypse.  The advertisements for the game showed a bunch of emos with mohawks and crap.  This is a bit misleading.  Most people in the game are wearing decent looking clothes / armor.  Its not as MadMax looking as the advertisements seem.  Once you get higher up in level you actually start to look more like a Flamethrower from WW2  or Master Chief type deal.  So its pretty wicked.  A very cool part also is that while riding on a horse you can shoot pistols and rifles.  I am not a big fan of cowboys etc but dual weilding pistols while riding on a horse is pretty friggin fun in the game.

Im posting this in hopes that many of you will try the game and give it a good 15+ hours of play before you make up your mind.  I thought the game was pretty mediocre for my first day or two playing but once i got the momentum built it become so much fun.

Lastly, this game has one of the best looking horizons Ive ever seen.  The canyons / sunset / sunrise / clouds make all the background look great behind all the objects.

So, in summary, if your a veteran to old MMORPGs, you will love this game fi you give it an honest try, it incorperates many of the best aspects of past RPGs.

Great review. I keep hearing so many good things about FE.

Nice review but do want to comment on: You can be a pure crafter or pure combat, or a mix.

You can not be pure crafter, you will not be able to buy all mats from vendors, unless you have friends that will provide you with mats needed or have a combat alt to provide you with the mats needed for crafting. So in that way you could be a pure crafter, but just want people to know that you need to rely on several things before you can say you can be a pure crafter.

Same applies to a pure combat toon, sure it is possible but again you either need friends that are crafters or you need to make a crap load of chips(money currency in FE), you gonna need ALLOT of chips for lots and lots of skill/ability books if you want to atleast stand a change as a combatant, counting only on your skill lvl and weapon might get you somewhere in the lower parts but ignoring every other ability ranging from First Aid books to Ability or Mutant books will like I said not get you far in FE's world.

A mix is the way to go, for example if you into ranged weapons you gonna need ammo, best way to get ammo is by crafting it yourself, this means you need to lvl to set of Tradeskills, Science and Ballistics to lvl 30, Science to make Gunpowder and Ballistics to make the actuall ammo. Buying ammo is surely a waist of chips....

But like I said overall a nice review..

Thanks for this great review. Although i just bought the game I already like it a lot. Having played and tried so many MMOs, Fallen Earth is very refreshing.

I like to put it in Anarchy's Online's lineage despite the big differences.

Despite my young age in FE i tend to agree with you.

So far i really enjoy the very different atmosphere and the "open path" approach meaning you really take your character and almost do whatever you fell like with it.

Just went out to bestbuy today and picked it up on pure faith. Saw a couple nice posts and am going to give it a solid shot!

I loved the look when i beta'd the game but i was overly worried that the engine  just couldn't hack it so i held off on buying.

Eager to get back into it!

I keep hearing alot of good things about FE. How are the clans functioning? I.E. Are their benefits to being in a clan?

It is a great game, I'm glad to see people are enjoying it, and posting about it as well.  I recently had to cancel my sub as I've been spending way too much time playing FE. Theres so much to do, and overall its a great game, but once I was in it, I was in it for the long haul.  3 Months down the road, I need to get back on track (and lose that 3 months worth of weight I gained when playing virtually non stop)   But I can assure you, I'll be back pretty soon. Anyways, good post, theres so much to see and do in game, I miss it already.

Fallen Earth is great, it's a indie MMO so it's not a polished and pretty as the rest. The combat is slightly choppy. Graphics used to look like SWG, but  they improved them. First, the game's an amazing sandbox. The community treats you like your family. The dev's stain the game with blood and sweat, I swear some of them never leave their computer. They work so hard to craft this game. It's beautiful really. They deliver on their promises. Once you find a bug, one day later it's fixed.  They went from indie and rising. Give fallen earth a chance, if you don't like it now. Wait a couple months, at the rate the devs are going, it'll be hitting 8.0's on charts in no time.

Played - M59, EQOA, EQ, EQ2, PS, SWG[Favorite], DAoC, UO, RS, MXO, CoH/CoV, TR, FFXI, FoM, WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, TSW.
    Playing - PS2, AoW, GW2

I am still on the fencoe on this one.  I want to like it and on paper it has a lot of what I would check off as making a good game.  Just something about it is keeping me from getting all excited about it.

It does have a unique feel.  Combat is a bit clunky but, crafting is simple and easy to pick up as a side option to support your ammunition needs.  I was actually leaning towards a crafter role with rifle as my combat backup.

I guess the feel I am getting is the time requirement.  Not sure if I have the time and effort to put into a game such as this any longer.  Which may mean most of the MMORPG world maybe falling into this category for tru MMO games ( RE: not CO, STO, WoW ETC.)

Just not sure about it.  It could also be I have been burnt on what i thought were going to be good MMO games and am afraid this one will eventually let me down as well.  If it had some type of player housing in it ( I know there is something in the works ) I might be more interested as it would ogive it more of the PRE-CU SWG feel ( minus the variable resource stats ).  Even combat seems to have that feel of clunky pre-CU that SWG had at the time.

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

I would say the greatest benefit for new players to join a clan would be.. just the information you receive from veteran players.  On top of that, you've got assistance from clan mates for materials, protection, and of course weapons and armor.  Good clans have events, sometimes PvP events, taking conflict towns, etc.... but Post Apoc Radio always has a dance party going on around the embry tower.

In fact, the casual progression of Fallen Earth is what keeps me playing the most. I can log in for 20-30 minutes 5 times a week and feel like I'm progressing every session. I think this is mainly due to the fact you get 2 AP's per "bar" and there's 10 bars per level, and since you get XP from harvesting and crafting it really flows well for casuals.

    I play all ghame

There are other benefits, as well. If you love roleplaying, this game world is SO perfect for that. I'm in a light-medium RP clan, and it's just loads of fun!

Also...should you choose to take up a faction (you don't HAVE to)....a clan gives you more factions from which to more easily obtain faction items, provided you don't "piss off" your allied factions on the wheel. Like I'm in a Travelers clan. I'm CHOTA. So I will be allied (through the clan) with Travelers, Techs, and CHOTA, and then with Vista on my own (provided I don't participate in clan events killing the Vistas or running errands for their enemies.  Tricky balance....but hey....those kinds of things make the concept interesting.

I know they are also working on the PvP issues with killing your allied faction members (happens a lot, from what I hear), so as to make the faction alliances in PvP more meaningful.

A clan also, of course, helps you obtain crafted items that you might not otherwise have easy access to, and allows you, also, to help your clan in the same way with items that YOU may craft that they do not.

A clan is very useful in places where you can't complete storyline quests on your own. There are bunkers out there that you wouldn't DARE enter solo...lol.

I think clans are just a wonderful social part of the game, but not everyone is interested in joining a clan, and I can appreciate that too. Some people even role play loners that don't join clans to be true to the part they're playing. I know one fella who RPs a priest, who is really an ex-convict, is a bit "disturbed," and roams the lands. His name is Solus Pathfinder. If you run into him....be prepared for a strrrrrrrange conversation. From what I've seen of the guy....he makes the CoG (Clerics of Gate) look tame.  Oh...and he loves to booze it up, curse, and smoke (not sure what he smokes), so he's an interesting character.  :)

If you run into a crazy CHOTA chick named Rhianna Taylor...just run. She's nuttier than a fruitcake and is liable to swing a concrete tipped signpost at you for just looking at her wrong.

(Just a couple of RP'ers I happen to know.)

Anyway....SUPERB game. Sooooo glad I found it. =D
