Moving on, LotRO, EQ2, or Aion?

jammertk10jammertk10 Member CommonPosts: 88

At the end of my first month of subscription to LotRO, I"m trying to decide, continue on, or switch to EQ2/Aion.

I love PvE, and PvP, I hear EQ2 has great PvE, but from leveling my wiz up to 45 on unrest, I just didn't see it or feel it, it was dead boring. In LotRO, I played a warden, and it also felt boring, memorizing gambit combos, having a harder time tanking, barely any dps compared to other classes, but all in all there was something about the atmosphere, the lore and the immersion that grabbed me in a way. Aion, I don't know much about, I've seen some youtube videos, but that doesn't help much, looks fun, I like the CryEngine modded graphics, but as we all know graphics don't make a game. My machine can handle anything, so which of the 3 should I go for this month, and possibly in the future?

Thanks for the help,

Beo

    I can't speak of EQ2.

For Aion, pass it and never look back.  I was waiting on follow the game since the first gametrailers vid was posted.  Just this last month I resubscribed to LotRO even though my Aion playtime remains until the 22nd of this month.  Aion was a colossal letdown for me.  Levels 1-30/35 are very fun, imo, but after that it's just a joke at it's current state. (funny story, one reason I was looking forward to Aion was because it wasn't a game that handed out levels to people yet even I found it extremely grinding at 40)

As for warden, it's a very late bloomer.  I'm actually leveling an alt right now as a warden.  People typically say 58 is around the bloom time for warden.  Maybe try another class or just sit tight with it till higher levels.

Whatever you decide, good luck with it.

P.S. Yeah, LotRO has a fantastic atmosphere.

Heh, thanks for the opinion, that explains my warden problem, I only got him to 23! Maybe I'll retry LotRO on a champ or RK, still gonna try to find some more PvE info on EQ2, and maybe some PvP opinion on Aion, I don't mind grind, as long as there is substance at the end. And I thought of another, VG:SoH, if I did it in relation with EQ2, would it be worth a Station Access sub?

    Again, any help is appreciated,

    Beo =)

My advice would be to experiment with some other classes in Lotro. I have found that in that game (like many) finding the right class is the key if that is your only issue.

I leveled a warden to 34 and came to the same conclusion as you. I tried a Champion and a few others and finally gave Burglar a shot and am loving it. You just have to find what clicks with you.

If you will do the station pass I would say VG and EQ2.

VG is a very very good pve experience, just a shame they released the game is such a bad state, add to that EQ2 and you are on to a winner..

Stay well clear of Aion if I was you,the game is not a grind..more like a life sapping b"tch with no end in sight that will not quite, add to that the gold sellers, hackers, kill stealers, bad support, etc etc etc...

have playing all 3 games and currently spending most my  time in Aion i would  say  EQ2 is the  better of them for  PVE, PVP in  EQ  is a  joke which is why i am testing the  waters in Aion. i will agree tho if they added VG stuff to  EQ2 i would  never leave.

I would say out of those 3 LOTRO is probably the most well done MMO. Although in my opinion vanguard is looking very good right now, if SOE would pitch the money into it that they pitched into EQ2 then it would be a definite winner.

First toon is always hardest to level in LoTRO.  The quests are all new and you will not have the best gear.  Warden with good crafted gear and weapons is a great combination as you are  a tank (good survivability)  with good dps.  Warden was one of the most powerful classes in the game. I am not sure if this is still true after all the changes with Mirkwood.  If you are having trouble with dps a guild member may be able to make you some good weapons.

Some off the dps classes in LoTRO have more dps than the warden but they do not have the warden's survivability.  Warden is also one of the more difficult classes to learn as you have to memorise the gambits.  Remembering the gambits can be a problem if you do not play that toon regularly. If you want a dps class you could try hunter, runekeeper or champion but they are squishy compared to the warden.

I think I've decided upon LotRO. Aion has gotten so much negativity, and I finally remembered part of why I hated and left EQ2, the texture quality was HORRIBLE, even on ultra settings, my machine is 2x 5770s, last time I played that game it STILL looked horrible, everything maxed out. Now I'm left with the choice of what class to play in LotRO, continue on my 23 warden? or switch to a champ or a RK? Hunter looks fun but I hear it's overplayed...

Again, any and all help is very appreciated!

The beautify of lotro is that all classes can find groups.. most people tho have multiple lvl 60+ alts, so will switch to what's needed.  I personally have one 59 and when i find endgame groups on eldamir alot of the time people will switch out a toon so i can bring my burg.. i say play them all then stick w/ what u like.

I always find the question "what class should I play" such a stupid question.

    Play what you enjoy!

What fun is it to say play a healer as it is the most sought after class if you do not enjoy playing that that class?

Do the players that do this say to themselves before logging on..

"Well I hate the class but at least I get in a group"?

Play what you enjoy and to hell with the rest!

I have never and will never understand people that pay to play a class that others want them to.

Totally, completely, and 100% agree. The same goes for so-called overplayed classes. Who cares? If I get enjoyment out of the mechanics and style of a class that 90580490134123 other people are playing, so what? I pay to play these games for me. Screw what other people think.

That's why I unapologetically play a Blood Elf Death Knight and Retribution Paladin in WOW. ;)

Vanguard or LoTR for PvE.  I currently prefer Vanguard, but its dying due to poor management by SOE.  LoTR has a brighter future.

  • smutsmut Member Posts: 250

I'd say LOTRO or AION. EQ2 populations are very low and if you want to go to EQ2, wait for the next expansion in a couple months. Otherwise you'll be spending a lot more money to buy TSO then spend another 40 on the new expansion whereas if you wait you'll pay 40$ for the new expansion included with all others. So 40$ or 80$, I'd wait and save 40 bucks. AION is still relatively new so populations are good. LOTRO is a great PvE game with a good community.

For a first toon hunter has the advantage of having a fast run speed and the ability to port.  Porting will save you a  lot of in game money that you would have spent on stable rides.  Warden can port too and has an enhanced run speed buff.  For hunter I would chose Explorer for crafting as the enhanced run speed makes mining and harvesting wood faster, and you will be able to craft leather armor for your hunter.  Explorer can feed ore and  wood to your alts to level their crafting.  Alternatively, you can give the hides, ore and wood to guild members so they can make you some gear if you do not like crafting.  Repairs on armor are not as expensive for hunter leather armor as it is for the champion heavy armor and money is tight for your first toon.

Hunters were over represented for the Mines of Moria release (they were so much  fun to play)  but I do not think this is the case now.  Hunter dps is lower now and I found that my hunter was a bit squishy in Mirkwood and harder to solo in Mirkwood than some of my other toons.  Hunter is still one of the most popular classes but no where near as popular as it was. Hunters will have no trouble soloing most areas prior to Mirkwood which is for level 60 - 65.  Hunters can solo successfully in Mirkwood, it is just a lot more challenging.

    Runekeeper is fun too.

For most classes you start to notice big improvements around level 42 to 45 when they become a lot more powerful.

You should play the class you like.  You level fairly quick, so eventually most players who stay with the game end up with more than 1 maximum level toon.  Whatever classes you decide to try, you can still play your warden if you find you prefer it.

As was stated -- I saw that "Warden" and went "ouch"... It's probably the hardest class to get into in the game.

Aion -- I moved away from that idea before it hit beta outside of the orient. For some it's a good choice, for others... a poor choice. I didn't like the mixed message "trying to appeal to all" when the game is a PvE shell over a PvP "end-game" focus. EQ2 may work but if you look at VG:SoH... Don't bother if it's about PvP. That game is PvE centric and PvP can't even really be considered a 'tacked on effort". PvE wise, it's well beyond most others but not something to even consider if PvP is in your mind.

Another PvE/PvP contender would be SWG.  Whereas it gets very bad press, that's because it shifted from being an open skill based system over to a class/level based progression system.  This "backstabbing" of the community infuriated many who enjoyed the skill based progression but, as a class/level based system, it has extensive PvP and PvE options.  Though it is in the sci-fi area vs fantasy.

Do you like quest line?  Grind-alike? or what?  It really depends what kind of MMORPG u like..

Aion is quest-line(where everyone follow the same footstep)and level up by turning in quest or you grind to level on your own adventure?

LotRO is same idea as Aion..

    EQ2 is different...

I would suggest wait... play the free games for now until Final Fantasy 14 online comes out and Diablo 3.

I played EQ2 hardcore for 2 years, you do quests to get XP just like every other MMO. And you will be doing it all solo because the population is dead at the low end. Most people still playing are already at max level grinding the same dungeons over and over.

EQ2 for pve and Aion for pvp but remember Aion is new and has more potential to expand and become a better game than most do.

All I've read here is lots of negativity or neutrality towards AION, I was really hoping it'd be something amazing. It looks incredible and the PvP sounds like exactly what I'm after. I enjoyed LOTR up to lvl 30 where i played a guardian but it seemed so dull, i was following the exact same quests as everyone else no matter what class I would tread their footsteps. To me it didn't feel like I had my own story and therefore it felt like i didn't have my own character.

  • davidalpha77davidalpha77 Member Posts: 11

I have never played EQ nor Aion, but I love LOTRO.

I leveled to 50 cap a hunter in the old days (when everything needed a group to be done...), and quit off just and only because of not enough player to get to fellowship content.

But now is different, as patches and expansions have improved the chance to enjoy the game playing alone and/or joining groups for a short range of quests or instances. The lower the group quests, the more chance to find people for them...

I have a 42 warden at Angmar, leveling from them to Mysty and Forochel, avoiding not esential content as I played before with the hunter, and have purchased Moria to discover new zones and try the legendary items system.

I am at spanish guild (as I am spanish), great community with crafting roles to make items for each others,  and I remember from the past,  easy to be helped by a higher level player as they offer in the chat...this is for me the real and great mmorpg experience.

This game is great, this is what I can say.

  • tehikktehikk Member Posts: 497

Sounds like you'd want to play WoW or FFXI, not one of those three, but if I had to choose from the three, EQ2.

I never tried Aion and I cannot give an opinion on it.

EQ2 is tedious and boring, don't bother with it.

LotRO is quick leveling and you can get to the high levels all solo if you want but there is also plenty of options for grouping on the way up.

I never tried Aion as it seemed lame to me so I can't offer a real opinion on that one.

  • Omegam0Omegam0 Member UncommonPosts: 25

I get the impression you want to like aion but are afraid based on the reviews. Well I would suggest finding someone willing to give you a buddy key to try it out for free. I play it and am in my first month and am undecided about wether I will keep playing, its got its high moments but its also got its low moments. Graphically its amazing, pvp was fun and so is pve though there is alot of grinding and it feels like the crafting kind of sucks. Also there are elements that remind you of the free games from asia, but they are not as intrusive in this game.

As for LOTRO I only played a trial and I liked it, and I agree, play a class that you enjoy, I suggest making one of each if you can and play them all to 10, that way you get a small taste of them and can find your playstyle abit easier.

as for EQ2, well I never did like the game but that was a personal preference. I do enjoy vanguard but now that its starting to be a better game than its release showed, it feels like the company may be abandoning it now. such a shame too.

Just my opinions hope they help.

  • jammertk10jammertk10 Member CommonPosts: 88

First of all, thank you to everyone who has responded.

I resubbed for 3 months to LotRO, tried some classes, but I'm not quite enjoying it like I thought I would. I also activated the EVE sub I bought for 5 bucks off of steam a while ago, and I've found that to be very fun, but at the same time lacking.

I love, and I mean LOVE the game right now, but I really do miss playing with defined, fantasy based classes. When I played WoW, way back when, I loved playing my mage, everything about him, and I haven't found a character that I truly enjoyed more until I picked up EVE. However like I said, I want some fantasy back in my game, I want something that has to do with magic, it really has, and continues to captivate me.

So I guess it's now simplified into, something P2P with a fun, magic-based class, that has a decent population, has some goal to work towards endgame, PvE or PvP, don't mind which, and most importantly, with depth, nothing shallow. So anyone up to the challenge?

    Beo

PostScript: I left my mage at 60...... don't bother recommending WoW, as I'd rather wait for when expansion time comes around, and play through the new content it's supposedly remasking/remaking, so it's in a way off the table until then.
